Being pressured from above to make something they could push out the door to keep Singapore from taking legal action.
It's amazing how you could have a brief of making a multiplayer version of Black Flag, take over a decade to do it and fuck it up so badly.

I could understand if they built it from the ground up but they had black flag as an base

It is weird. Just copy Black Flag but remove the assassin crap. Done.

Always seemed like a supremely flawed idea to me because of that though.
Take an element of a popular game which whilst large is not the primary one, remove it and make it a standalone game does not sound like a good starting point for a game.
Not to mention black flags sailing bits were boring enough on their own imagine that without the good(ish) assassin based stuff. No thanks. All that said, it looks like it's somehow even more boring and, make no mistake, it was boring before.

Then there's me who loved the sailing and boat fights both in Black Flag/Valhalla and especially in Odyssey (home country represent innit) Still think this one is way too bad (bAAAAd?) for the time and base they had to work with, mind

It's not really flawed if you basically make the assassin stuff pirate stuff. They just decided to remove everything and think I know let's make your character a boat. It's bizarre.

Just think we've still got Beyond Good & Evil 2 to look forward to as well. Thanks Ubisoft. We all wanted a co-op adventure.

I still can't believe the resource harvesting minigame, it would be a shite mobile game you wouldn't want to play on your phone but in a seventy quid title? Yikes.

Skill Up's review seems fairly balanced:
TL;DR - Taken in isolation, Skull and Bones is broadly fine. Viewed in context, however, it sucks.

According to wiki, it cost $120 million to make (not sure if that includes marketing, seeing a lot of ads, even one on tv with michelle rodriguez) edit: some other website is saying the final dev cost is $200 million
The devs changed the setting several times. Black flag worked as you had different things to do, got bored of the tired stealth missions, get on a boat and shoot some other boats. In this its, got bored of shooting other boats, go onto land and pick up some resources eg 10 cannonballs (when you can craft 100 in one go)

I played a bit more of the demo...and decided to start a fresh run of BF on my ps5,lovely. Also never played it on sony before so some trophies up for grabs, hardly a reason to play but a nice added bonus.

Premium edition at just shy of £100 blows my tiny mind.

After they did a free trial before release they've now done another, offering people 8 hours of play seems rather brave, for a lot of people that'll be more than enough to decide not to buy it. register.ubisoft.com/skullandbones-trial/en-GB
