I had someone tell me they had 'great fish and chips' at a restaurant. Obviously they were fucking shit with small bits of fish in breadcrumb and straight cut chips with skins on and some tartare sauce.

I don't think it's possible to get proper fish and chips outside UK and Ireland tbh. It's the one food that I truly miss.

That fucking plate of food with the beans committing suicide because the mountain of chips. And the slice on the bread.
Cubby is in my head rent free. Just needs to drop his fork handle in the beans, pick it up with his sausage fingers, not wipe it and carry on eating like nothing happened.

I think Cubby's tea looked banging. And some of those teas in that Instagram look like grade-A Saturday night grub in front of Big Break.

I don't think it's possible to get proper fish and chips outside UK and Ireland tbh. It's the one food that I truly miss. You can get the good stuff out here but it does help you have a large expat community, the first thing they do is set up a chippy. Carrefour also stock a pretty good frozen cod and haddock which will see you through and they also have pukka pies which is helpful. Now the controversial part, Australia and probably NZ do fish and chips better than the UK hands down. This is mainly because we have better fish, I mean cod is good and all but it's no King George whiting. Plus I have no idea how your battered savs are a wrongun'. I never would of guessed but seafood is something I miss, not the lack of seafood here because there is plenty but the different types of fish and the quality of it. Oysters too, it's all just larger, cleaner and better and not from an over fished area. Also Pukka Pies are alright but they are no match for Villi's.

I only had fish and chips a few times in Australia but including highly rated places on the great ocean road and it was fine but not noticeably better than a good Scottish chippy (I have limited experience with English chippies). I struggle to understand how you can live in Alicante and miss seafood , fucking hell the mercado central in Alicante is incredible. I was sadly disappointed in seafood in Australia, every normal restaurant just batters or breadcrumbs everything and fries it. I appreciate that it could be better in high end places but we were travelling with family including fussy kids. However, quality and variety of fish and seafood travelling round South Australia and Brisbane doesn't come close to travelling around Alicante province, in "normal" restaurants.

It's about fish and chips though, normally from a chippy. I wasn't talking about restaurant grade fish and chips. It's about the quality of the actual fish or more rightly the type of the fish. No King George Whiting, Barramundi, Flathead, Butterfish, Australian salmon, etc... Huge fresh tiger prawns and massive southern ocean oysters. Forget Spain it's a Europe thing, they just don't have the fish I prefer and believe to be superior. And I'm specifically talking battered, chippy style fish not some fancy plate of whatever.

Unless you're getting them from the Savol region of Southern Austria you can't really pass comment.

I'm going to Australia at the end of the year hopefully, I'll conduct some research and let you know if you're right.

To be fair though these are the fish I grew up with so there is probably bias but I do miss them and notice a difference. Plus we used to catch them too when we went out fishing.

Can't get decent fish and chips in Tokyo, at least I haven't found any. And they have access to good fish. It's more that the few places that sell it have adapted it for local tastes (fair enough i guess) so it's just not the same. Plus you can't get proper chips anywhere.
Fish and chips in the UK was always super hit and miss, depending on the chippy though.
Then again, you can get Tempura, which is a nice alternative.
I wish we could get fish fingers though... the closest thing they do here *all* have embedded tartar bloody sauce!

Chippys here are overrated, stodgy crap. The Dutch and Germans have better chippy type establishments.
