Only if you've had surgery to your throat, or you want people to think you've had throat surgery. There are so many valid reasons for wanting that.

Every wedding I’ve ever been to there’s always been someone who wears something that breaks the conventions and massively stands out. Personally it goes against every atom of my being to be ‘that guy’ and I honestly can’t get my head round why anyone would ever want to be, but again, it’s almost a wedding tradition that someone does it, so I guess you do you.

44 years old and I’d never even heard of an ‘Ascot’ before.
If you do wear one what will your wife wear to coordinate?

That's always me. I generally have no clue what's the correct attire, definitely don't own it and care even less. I was inappropriately dressed at my own wedding too. Everyone thought it was great. I think weddings are to celebrate your union with the people you care about, why make it into a boring tick box exercise. Just have fun and don't sweat the details.

Fwiw, I doubt it'll be me that stands out, no matter what I wear. The bride herself and her large extended family are fabulous and frankly, they will (quite rightly) be the centre of attention no matter what. I don't think I'll be upstaging them if I wear a cravat under my shirt instead of over it. Basically, I just don't like wearing a tie very much. But I probably will.

It's just a cravat/tie worn under the shirt, instead of over (as per the picture). Tbh, she's wearing a velvet dress (in Bronze, I believe), so whatever neckwear I choose will be co-ordinated to match her. Pale grey suit (expensive), probably a white shirt (because it's a wedding), tan oxford brogues. Bronze or gold tie/cravat, I guess.

As ever, Danno makes a good point. If the wedding is going to be held in this preposterous heat, go for a tuxedo T-shirt and a pair of Tobias Fünke-eque cutoff jeans - the T-shirt isn't quite as classy as an ascot, but it's in the same ballpark, while the cutoffs are both elegant and functional. I used to look at adverts for those tuxedo T-shirts as a kid reading Smash Hits and think that was the height of elegance. Now I'm much older and wiser of course and I'm thinking that maybe I should get one. /doesn't own a suit and didn't get married in one but did get one for the brother in law's wedding so as to play the part.

I like it (the previous photo, not this one). I’m not sure about the flower or the cyanide capsule, but the rest is top class.
I am not elegant, not do I come from a race known for it.

Last wedding I went to (my brother's) the best man who is almost completely covered in tattoos also had his hair done leopard print. TBF he has this all the time anyway and has done for the last 20+ years, but I don't really know what the staff in the registry office thought about it xD

My sister in law’s wedding is in 2 weeks and my wife’s freaking out over what I’ll wear, it’s apparently a casual affair but I’m toying between a charcoal flannel 3 piece and my morning dress. She seems to think even a tweed jacket and odd cavalry twill trousers will be too much

I voted yes as I don't see how it could possibly upstage anyone. If its a dressy wedding with morning suits / prince charlie's etc. it looks relatively casual next to them, if its not a dressy wedding with the groom in a regular suit then I'd expect the crowd to be more eclectic anyhow. Though everyone wearing the same thing at a wedding seems boring as fuck, full on American wedding that.

You probably shouldn't rely on sartorial advice from a bunch of people in cargo shorts.

A nice suit, nice shoes and a properly ironed shirt defecate on a novelty accoutrement.
But if you do go with your neck scarf wear it like Dr Zachary Smith.
Maybe a monocle and a pocket watch so people know you're a man about town.

You probably shouldn't rely on sartorial advice from a bunch of people in cargo shorts. One of my first pieces of online writing was an impassioned opinion piece on why men should never wear shorts except at the beach, unless they're Asian or shave their legs. I was convinced that hairy legs are very off putting. I also had strong opinions about flip flops. I think I still do.

Are you saying Asians don't have hairy legs? Or they do but it looks good?
I've got lovely white hairy legs.
