When I first moved to Belgium in the mid 90s they had only just changed the rule on roundabouts from priority to the right (which was the general national rule) to priority given to those already on the roundabout (ie to the left) - but it varied from roundabout to roundabout, not all had made the switch yet, so there was signage to let drivers know which kind of roundabout it was, but this was Belgium, so signage was shit, in short, it was hilarious.

Yeah, so most of the roundabouts here are tiny little things. We don't have many of the really big ones, so I guess my understanding of roundabout rules and etiquette is a bit different.

A fun thing to do to those inchers out is to slow right the fuck down in front of them, ideally if it gives a gap of cars behind you enough time to close.

North America has those 4 way stops, which are pretty good for pedestrians as you always have right of way. They’re a pain when there’s no one around and you’d otherwise cruise through a mini roundabout when driving. Big roundabouts aren’t roundabouts either, they’re gyratory systems

This one used to be down the road from me. Was not fun the first time I had to do it, but after a while you learned to just point towards where you wanted to go and go for it.

I go over the magic roundabout in swindon relatively frequently and its not that bad. Mainly because, as you can see from that picture, people tend to treat it as a massive roundabout and just go clockwise anyway.

This can't be real. Why are there so many lanes?! And the top right one doesn't look like it's attached properly. It looks like a Dark Souls area.

I think on my first or second driving test it was all going perfectly until the instructor directed us to one of those fucking massive mega-roundabouts near the NEC and I couldn't work out where he wanted me to go, let alone which lane I was meant to be in. Obviously I failed. Seemed a bit harsh.

The theory is that its faster. If you wanted to get from bottom left to bottom right, you can do it in two mini-roundabouts without encountering any traffic from the three other exits and going the whole way around.
Same with bottom left to top right. You can go straight across the first roundabout, cut over a few lanes then over the top right mini-roundabout and you will generally have right of way. The problem is, as you can see, people don't tend to do that but, honestly, in the main, it works fine. It takes traffic from the two busiest lanes and keeps them away from the other exits so it doesn't snarl the town up.

I wondered how long it would be before the fucking stupid Magic Roundabout got brought up, it's like Godwin's Law for transport.

The thing is, people only ever see it from above and it looks like a fucking nightmare. If you work yourself up about it like a fanny it can be a problem but, honestly, the fact that swindon isn't perpetually on fire is a testament to how ok actually it is.
Although my low stakes conspiracy is that swindon town planners get paid by the bit of street furniture as they never use one roundabout when four will do or, heaven forbid, one set of fucking traffic lights.

Looks positively gentlemanly in comparison to the Swindon one, but because it's used by people that live in Buckinghamshire, it can be fiesty. I'm surprised they don't just drive straight through the green bit.

First time going round the arc de triomphe was an arse puckerer Haha, I went to visit Peugeot-Citroen in the mid 90s at their Paris office just behind the Champs-Elysées and they put me behind the wheel of a prototype electric Peugeot 109 and sent me on my way around the Arc de Triomphe, WOOOOOOO that was a rush

Another low key conspiracy is that Swindon deliberately try to ruin their own reputation to stop people looking too hard at them. It has quite a few blue chip companies, one less now Honda is gone, and is actually surprisingly affluent. Like every car is an Audi or BMW. I have genuinely no idea why it gets such a bad rep other than them deliberately turning their town centre into a wasteland for some reason.

It's a great location, and as you say it's a good place for a lot of jobs. Maybe that's why there are so many young single workers there.
But it really does have almost no culture or heart and it's just young people going to bars on a Friday night.
Or at least it was for the 3 years I lived there as a young single worker ;-)
It does have great sports centres though.
