Same here... although has to be carried out at a specific, really inconvenient, optician so I don't bother.

Right bear with, the last time I had glasses I just got readers (both x1.5 I think) and I happily used these at work (sat in front of PC screens) where my eyes are about 2-3ft from the screens.
So after my recent eye test I have a prescription for readers (both eyes x1.75) and another for watching the TV.
Now with these new readers they're great for reading a phone or book but useless at work as I can't now see any detail or read the text on the screens unless I'm pretty close ie less than 2ft.
Is this to be expected with readers once you get to a certain prescription or could they have screwed up the glasses somehow?
I've not been back to the opticians yet to ask them.

The more the lens has to correct your vision in a certain range, the bigger the effect it’ll have on the rest of your vision to

Get a bigger monitor imo.

The more the lens has to correct your vision in a certain range, the bigger the effect it’ll have on the rest of your vision to So how do I see anything in focus from anything further than 2ft away? Yet another pair of glasses? I have my old ones on today at work, absolutely fine for looking at the screen (3ft away typically) and wandering about the office.

Are you short sighted as well as long sighted?
I suspect the answer to your problem is to change your glasses for each situation, or invest in some varifocals. Welcome to getting old

That's where I am. Last time I had my eyes tested, they said glasses for longer distance were optional. It's definitely got worse in the last 18 months and revert to my old glasses for watching telly.

I'm long sighted, the opticians have said I'm a little short sighted when I said I thought reading the text on some games on the TV were hard to read sometimes and that it would be good if I could get some glasses for that. But these new readers are brilliant for staring at a phone but anything further than 2ft away is a blur. Completely unlike my last pair of readers.

You know when you take a photo of something close up the distance is blurry, and vice versa?

I have 2 pars of glasses now, one for reading/using my phone, and the other for distance. With my reading glasses everything more than 2' away is a blur. My optician wasn't sure I could even get varifocals with my prescription.
It's a pain in the arse swapping glasses if I'm watching TV and just want to check something on my phone quickly, or if I go to bike home from work and realise I've got my reading glasses on.
Getting old sucks

Well that fucking sucks, I may aswell just stick with my old glasses then as they were really only just getting a bit out of focus with my phone and other really closeup stuff. Why didn't the optician say they're gonna be useless for anything further than 2ft away? To complicate matters I got a test at Specsavers and bought glasses at Vision Express. Still, only £25 a pop thank goodness. I'll see what the distances ones are like when they arrive next week.

Hang on, 2ft is miles away! I wouldn't expect to see much that far away with my readers on.

I could with my last ones, read stuff from closeup to about 4-5ft, not tiny writing obviously but generally all in focus.

Same thing happened to me, until the close up stuff became harder to read.

So here's the thing, I bought some £3 +1.75 readers off eBay and blow me down I can read anything and everything, just like my old glasses before, I reckon they've screwed up my prescription one's.

Don't splurge on two sets of glasses.
Get one long distance lens and one short distance lens.

So had a free eye test today, their conclusion is I need verifocals, screw that so they gave me a refund, I'm not 100% convinced, they're just so drastically different to how I can see with my old glasses. I'll stick with my old glasses and the £3 readers I can buy off eBay for now.

For closeup stuff I still tend to either peer over the top of them or remove them completely, and, for things like looking down when descending stairs, the bit of lens I’m looking through still needs to be for distance – not the bloody reading bit!

I've had varifocals since around turning 50 a few years back. They are annoyingly expensive but I just couldn't be arsed constantly switching glasses as my job means I'm frequently swapping between short/mid distance. Took me a couple of days to get used to the difference between moving my eyes when I want to read something close and moving my head when I want to look at something further away.
Anecdotally, it seems people who've worn glasses for most of their lives are the ones who struggle to switch to varifocals, e.g. my dad just couldn't get along with using them but had been wearing glasses since he was a kid. I've only been wearing glasses since my mid 40s and it wasn't a major problem switching for me.

I've got varifocals in the past year. I think they are rubbish. The focal point is so narrow, I'm not sure what they would ha ve been like if I'd bought the cheaper versions. (Varilux X).

Just had a fitting for my new glasses, spent an hour watching him filing away bits of the frame as he carefully handsculpted them to fit my face perfectly, what a treat

Once we all get to our late 40s and later, our ability for our eyes to adjust between different ranges has diminished to the point that a single vision lens is not going to be sufficient for all our needs.
As we continue to age, our eyes continue to lose any last ability to adjust their range. Nothing will decelerate (or accelerate) this natural process. We just have to work around it.
If your screen is at 1m and you read a book/ phone at 40cm then no single vision lens will be correct for both. If you are a desktop user and 50+ then your Optomtrist should be providing you with a prescription that has THREE ranges accounted for: Distance, Intermediate(Desktop range) and Near(reading and phone).
You can then buy gls set at the correct range for your computer (and they would be specific just for that) and then get reading glasses and/or distance glasses or varifocals if needed also for outside of the office. If you use a computer as significant part of your job and you need specific computer glasses then by law in Britain your employer is obliged to pay for them (though they have the right to specify where you get them and the cost has to be reasonable).
Varifocals for general use are far more often liked than disliked (as long as they have been fitted correctly, and not some cheapo pair bought online with nobody to measure/fit them correctly), but they will NOT work when you look at a desktop screen, since you would be looking through the distance part of the varifocal at your screen which is at the intermediate distance.
Hope this helps.
N.B You can get occupational varifocals which have your computer range prescription in the top and reading on the bottom, but this is only necessary if, while on the computer, you also need to regularly refer to a nearer task (like a notepad), which computer uses tend to do less these days.

urgh, my blepharitis is back. Had a bad bout of it last year, but it cleared up. Suspect stress and a stinking cold has something to do with it.
