So thinking I need to get some more bins, normally I'd go to Specsavers and grab two pairs for the price of two but frankly it seems the majority of glasses I've bought from there haven't lasted very well, arms getting loose, losing their fitment etc etc and they aren't cheap unless you go for their cheap as chips stuff, which in retrospect perhaps I should. With a rath of online suppliers promising the earth any recommendations? I guess my biggest concern is that at least when you buy from a highstreet shop they at least check the glasses match your eye fitment.

My recommendation would be LASIK. One of the best decisions I ever made.

I think most places will do you a good deal on two for the price of two. Shop around

Eyes weren’t terrible, I only really needed to wear glasses when I drove but out of habit I just wore them constantly. It was about $3k.

My recommendation would be LASIK. One of the best decisions I ever made. Prepare for all of your friends and family to give you slightly strange looks for the first few months as they adjust to your unframed, sexy head.

I didn't like it whenever I saw my dad without glasses as a kid. Just too weird

I too am wondering if the private opticians are any better than Specsavers, who get stuff like the distance to my ears wrong and such. Or if they basically just only sell you the expensive frames with a designer label on the arms somewhere.

freddiemercurystwinSpecsavers' cheapest glasses have always sufficed for my needs, but I only wear them for limited periods of time; if you need to wear yours for hours on end, and even their more expensive ones aren't lasting long enough, it's probably worth looking elsewhere. I can't imagine my bottom-shelf pair proving to be durable if I had to wear them throughout my waking hours! I seem to remember that Boots Opticians were pretty good on quality and price, last time I checked. If you have a Costco membership card, I think they're quite well regarded too.

I wear cheap specsavers ones day in day out except when I'm asleep. They're mostly fine. Dunno if there's anything better out there or if they're just more expensive due to the designer label on them.

To be honest, if I'm going to wear something on my face all day, it's going to be fancy and, yeah, designer. It's my face

I could buy basic 2-for-1 glasses and frames for at least 30 years before I’d reach the cost of laser surgery. If you’re going to do it I figure early 20’s is the best time, when you’re no longer growing and will get the most benefit for the longest time. But who can afford it in their 20’s?

Yeah but with the wee logo with some designer cunt's logo on your face all day? Why would I want Hugo Boss or Ted Baker's name on my face ever?

Generally go for Specsavers/Vision Express 2 for 1 deals. As I'm farsighted, the lenses aren't too bad. But also, because they're forever being taken on or off, and balanced on my head, they don't last long. No idea if an independent would be better. I doubt it really, given everything is cheap shit these days.
My depth perception is also getting quite bad close up. Forever walking into tree branches etc. Spanner

I paid 30 quid for pair of glasses that cost me almost 400 from boots. They have a virtual mirror so you can "try" stuff on. Worked out really well. The only drawback are that you have to measure your pupil distance on your own (which wasn't too hard really) and it takes about a month to arrive. But for 90-odd percent discount I can fooking wait. www.goggles4u.co.uk/Also I have a 73% discount code DAD73

Might also be worth checking out Asda Opticians. They have three tiers of glasses. I opted for their range, where you can get one pair for £80 and two for £120. Compared with the £400 I spent on my glasses on my previous go around, I am very happy with the pair I bought. Click here for info about Asda OpticiansAlthough, it will have been two years since my last eye test, come Halloween. This time I will try these guys. Custom-fitted glasses, which is good, since I do not have a regulation-sized head. Click here for info about Iolla

Only ever go to my local independent optician these days after some horror stories at the big chains. They get my prescription spot on every time and have been quick to solve issues in the past.
I'm very short sighted, astigmatic, and a couple of years ago I ended up with what was eventually diagnosed as "posterior vitreous detachment" which is where the gel sac in your eyeball comes away from your retina and I now have millions of fucking "floaters" in my vision all the time. This usually happens to people in their sixties but I got it in my mid forties. Go me.
I pay a fucking fortune for my glasses but I simply wouldn't be able to function without them so it's totally worth it. Designer frames all the way.

local-ish Kodak place has been good & thorough for the exam but their frame selection is pretty shocking.
Also - and all of the high street ones seem to do this* - the rigid gender ringfencing of frames is frankly a bit weird - "this bit of rectangular metal is FOR LADIES ONLY", I'm not talking about the pink shit with flowers & butterflys, but just regular unisex neutral frames but just better sized for heads smaller than Shrek (I'm not a complete midget, just 5'5"-5'6", ie. average-ish woman height)

Hey, as mentioned in the Getting Old thread perhaps this might be nice for people with questions about specs and eyes that want to an impartial answer. Maybe you've been in to an Opticians and wondered why they gave you what they did.
Perhaps there are Optoms and other Dispensing Opticians on the forum that might want a bit of an anonymous rant about stuff as well?

Recommendations for frames for reading glasses that are forever on and off/on top of head?

I can't read it properly, too small and blurry.
