It won't actually be called that, but it was only announced today that a spinoff with Jon Snow set after the events of Game of Thrones is in the works. Kit Harrington to return. Getting a real strong vibe of "You're right, we fucked up the ending" from this. In the hands of George, a sequel could work, but the show never mentioned all the minor houses for convenience and I believe every great house is dead? Lannister, Baratheon, Targaryen, Greyyoy, Martell, Bolton....all gone. In other words, fucked it

Ah great, a show featuring the most boring character.
I didn't actually hate the last season. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't great, it was rushed and patchy but I can't say I was angered like many, found enough of it enjoyable to get by.
I certainly don't get the sentiment that it retroactively ruins the good stuff that came before. And frankly it wasn't a perfect show anyway, there have been dodgy bits throughout.

I wouldn't say that it ruined the stuff that came before. But it's made any potential rewatch more difficult for me, because I'd be watching it and constantly thinking about how annoying it's going to get.

I already had that moment with the Sand Snakes. I honestly prefer anything in the last season to anything involving Dorne (except for Oberyn, he was cool) and the Sand Snakes.
I even made a video expressing my views:

I didn't hate the final season. It wasn't perfect but GOT is/was so hyped it was never going to satisfy. Add in the book crowd and the "there's too much ackshun not enuff scheming" the last season was doomed.
This interests me far more than the Dragon/Targaryan prequel. I'm not a massive prequel fan and would much rather follow Snow as an individual living in the Seven Kingdoms than another show with a dozen characters.

I just appreciate the fact that the TV show had an ending. Lord knows the books never will.

People say they felt the writers not up to scratch in S8. Some felt it in S7. Some in S6. But S5 man...those Sand Snakes and all of Dorne was the first warning. "You want the good girl, but you need the bad pussy" In terms of this show...*BOOK WANKER SPOILER* They could build on the storyline around "Aegon" Targaryen landing on Westeros from Essos, accumulating an army to challenge. God its a mess

Frankly I found the last couple of books a very tedious slog. If the show glossed over too much, the books are bogged down by an awful pacing. Not sure I'll bother with the remaining ones.

Tuffty It was when that character was introduced in the books that I realised GRRM has no serious intention of finishing the story.

Admittedly not the biggest fan, but is it me or is Harrington rather... wooden?

God its a mess To be honest i felt it in season 3, the whole mutiny at Craster's Keep just felt a bit iffy. Tanner was a bit of a pantomime villain. On the other hand though, I actively like and prefer some of the changes the series made over the events in the book. The extended pairing of Arya and The Hound was joyous.

The last episode where I went "oh wow that was great" without a dozen asterisks after it, was probably the one where Cersei blowed up the church. That scene with her smiling out the window and swilling the wine was delicious.
Unfortunately they liked it so much that they kept her in that pose for the rest of the show.

I think the second episode of the last season was actually very, very good with no asterisks.
Just characters sat around talking, anxious about the upcoming battle, with good character moments.
I'd put it up there in the my top ten episodes.
That the next episode was a slightly tedious action battle, where everybody escaped miraculously unscathed even though their arcs had concluded was a massive, massive dissapointment.

I actually didn't mind the last season. Was it vintage Thrones? No.
But if it was going to end, it was always going to be a disappointment ultimately because the whole point of it was a tangled mess of plot-lines and characters on the background of a ice zombie mcguffin army. Same with Lost. The whole premise of the format was that you shared the world with the characters. That can't end satisfactorily as there is no pay off.

Well, I've never heard that one before. (It went to shit in 7, obvs) It's not as egregious, but S6 gave Arya plot armor to survive multiple stab wounds to the stomach and the introduction of Euron "BIG COCK" Greyjoy

Well, I've never heard that one before. (It went to shit in 7, obvs) The semi-popular opinion is that it went to shit after they ran out of books to follow. I believe that is from 6 onwards. Season 5 was also a noticeable drop in quality from 4, I would say. Really though, the full on rot set in with 7, which I would rate as worse than 8. 8 had some big moments that were incredibly dumb and/or badly handled, but I still thought it had some great pieces and was often visually spectacular. 7 just had them rushing all over the place, jumping around the continent in moments. There was obviously a lot of spinning plates to desperately get everything in its right place ready for the final season. Not sure why they would be going ahead with this show though. I would have thought that anything associated with the way it ended would be shunned by the angry mob of S8 haters. Prequels and something set 100s of years after might be given benefit of the doubt, but a direct sequel seems like it would be too tainted for many. Then again, maybe the rage about it is just a minority internet thing. I recall the physical release of S8 broke all sorts of records, so guess there was still quite an appetite for it. Edit: also, agree with Hickman. Episode 2 of season 8 was one of the best episodes since the early seasons. I thought episode 1 was pretty good too, if I remember rightly. They slowed things down for both those episodes and just let the characters speak for a while. It worked well. Shows what could have been if they actually went with the extra time they could have had.

If we're talking about Daenerys being a villain they telegraphed that seasons earlier. Can't see how it won't be in the books as well.

All things leading up to Bran was the problem for me. Might also be the actor which was even more wooden than Harrington. Felt very anti-climactic.

I've not read the books so can't offer an opinion there but I feel the tv show compelty dropped the ball on the last few seasons.
They never recovered from jon snow coming back from the dead.

This will end up being filmed back to back with season 2 of House Of The Dragon or something, and it'll be some crossover where "Jon Snow must deal with long buried secrets from the past" which you can then see the origin of the following week.

It was also the writing in the show trying to convince you that Bran had the best story of all the characters. Such a good story that they skipped right over him for an entire season.
