There's a couple of things that carry over from the demo to the main release if you have a save file. Might be worth a download even if you don't play it

There's also going to be a slight update to the demo to play a bit of Junon!

So is everyone expecting... **OG FF7 spoiler to follow** ... Aerith to live or die in Rebirth? If you look at the final shots of the trailer, it looks like Clouds sword has some magic whisper/destiny bullshit all over it. My feeling right now is she will live but ultimately will have to die as some form of course correction. In a way I think this time travel version of Sephiroth maybe wants her to live, as her death is a factor as to why Sephiroth fails hence why he manipulates Cloud so much to do his bidding, including saving Aerith. The game is marketing the idea of "What is fact and what is fiction" a lot, so maybe a lot of what we see will be false or something.
I say all this after the trailer also shows some unknown entity talking about how the black materia is good actually. So who knows. Not to forget Zack, whos literally on the cover of the game, in some alternate timeline/multiverse nonsense so whatever escapedes hes in will have an impact on the story too. Has the potential to get very stupid, I hope they stick it for what will be Part 3.

The thing for me is that the trailer implies that Aerith just handed over the white materia to someone. It looked to me like the church in Midgar, which is where Zack seemed to take her, so it's probably happening in that timeline.
I'm currently leaning towards the player's timeline following the original plot beat for beat, with the weirdness happening in the Zack/Aerith timeline. So she'll still die in the main/original timeline, and then maybe they converge at some point...?
I'd actually quite like it if it happens in a way that the original timeline stays completely in tact and therefore the OG is still canon - you just couldn't "see" what was happening in the alternate timeline.
Maybe the new timeline informs how Aerith still stops meteor or something? Bear in mind that releasing Holy, which was the character's plan all through the original game, wasn't what saved the day, and it is (heavily) implied that Aerith sorted it out from beyond the grave. Maybe they flesh that bit out in some way?
Actually it's just occurred to me that Aerith and Zack both appear at the end of Advent Children in the Church. Of course they were just supposed to be force ghosts at the time, but maybe it tries to lean into that a bit?
Or... maybe it's not a different timeline at all, and the Zack/Aerith stuff we've seen takes place after they have both died, and they have a little ethereal adventure that ties it all together? Though I guess the ending to part 1 doesn't really let that work 100%...

Try going back to the menu and/or restarting the game.

Yeah it just won't stick, it even shows it's set to Japanese after a full restart but no dice.

PSA: It seems as though copies of Rebirth are now out in the wild, so be careful if you want to avoid spoilers.

I like it. It's still ostensibly the same world, characters, and major story beats, but just the fact that a good portion of it is completely unpredictable I find really exciting. For now anyway... I might absolutely hate what they do with it!

I watched the ending to the first part again the other night and it really seemed to me, for the first time, that it was Midgar itself that had jumped between "timelines" (or whatever it actually is). You could kind of see it changing as all the fate things disappeared and it was all big and sparkly and ethereal and it happened simultaneously in both timelines.
Which made me think, isn't that kind of the role of Midgard in Norse mythology? Isn't it the gateway or point of connection between all the other realms or something?
So I'm thinking maybe there are different instances of Midgar specifically. Or the complete opposite - Midgar is the one constant and is the catalyst for whatever mechanism has caused the timeline stuff.
It would be possible that the first part took part in the alternate timeline and we have now shifted to the OG timeline. Zack was alive in our timeline at first.
I wonder how much of this explains, or can be explained by Cloud's fragile mental state.

Extremely hyped for this, I enjoyed the first and I hope the 2nd fixes some of the little niggles I had with remake.
I skipped the demo as I didn't want to spoil anything during my play through which is a weird thing to say as I know the original pretty much inside out.

Demo update's out and the 'improvement' in Performance mode seems to be them reducing the resolution to an integer scaled 1080p. The big map area's good though, there's plenty to do. Boss still suffers from the 'enemy in midair? good fucking luck' problem when playing as Cloud or Tifa though.

So the open world part is cool. Really having a blast getting to play as Red finally. Some gripes tho, biggest one being these intel fights. They're cool in that they're pretty challenging, the fights go on long enough where you can explore the combat more thoroughly that just encounters with grunts on the open map. That's all good but my god, what were they thinking having MIA talk on and on about the bloody eating habits or mating rituals of the monster as you start the fight. I'm not paying any attention to it at all and that plus the combat sounds is drowning out the music. And if you want to replay the fight cause you missed an objective or just want to do it again...you have to hear it all over again. I really hope that's something that's down to it being a demo and maybe they adjusted it for the final game or there's a way to disable it or something but it is annoying to hear already I'll dread it with how many of these fights they're gonna have in the final game. Like she's the worst character in the game already by default.
Some other complaints, I think they may have nerfed Tifa somehow? I seem to remember in Remake she could build up ATB pretty quickly but here it's quite slow which limits some of the fun flowing combos she can do so it takes more time to build up to Chi level 3 and link abilities together. There seems to be a lot of resources to gather in the world for crafting items. Don't make me have to press triangle everytime to pick it up. At least it's instant but just auto pickup, I don't care. And because there's a lot already I'm not even looking to see what I pick up. I hoped the photo mode would have been less restrictive this time too but it's as restrictive as ever. Also feels weird to say but the models seema a bit...waxy? I dunno if it's just cause of performance mode, but the models when out in the open world and combat look like cheap dolls. Tifa even has some kind of gleam to her cheeks like it's light reflecting off a wax doll or something. Rebirth had some of it too, but I don't recall it looking this bad. Again, maybe this will change the more I play or will change for the final game and appreciate I'm being nit picky given that the demo is a small fraction of a very big game, but all in all, still really excited for this now

Reviews are suitably stellar but from a quick glance a fair few of them comment on the ending being naff/not working.

And some padding/pacing issues. And of course terrible side quests. I think we all agree this is what Square Enix do these days..
