Went for my annual eye test today, my eyes have massively deteriorated to 20/20.
Since my LASIK 15 odd years ago I have had 20/10 or whatever it is called. Basically supersight like some fucking superhero. Been struggling a bit lately and so got tested, only to find out my bleary straining eyes are what most people live with on a daily basis. And this is just the start! Apparently at 43 this is normal to be nearly blind and it will just get worse.
Genuinely quite depressed and feeling old now.

This thread seems to have turned into what early onset dementia must be like. Get the fuck off my lawn. Where’s the teapot? Did you put it in the fridge again. Why is the milk in the medicine cabinet?

Nut sure what 20/20 represents - went to opticians a few weeks back and she said I had 20/20 vision, but without glasses I can't use any device with a screen, read books, etc.

It’s not a prescription, just generally means you can see an something 20 feet away as clearly as most people can

My eyes have been completely fucked since I was 35 and the last ten years have been extremely expensive and painful to no real effect, so I don't have much sympathy for people who 'only' have 20/20 now.
Oh, boo hoo.

Oh, boo hoo. My eyes are so bad I get free eye tests now. Haven't had 20/20 vision since I was a small child.

My eyes are on the way down too. Have to have reading glasses and one eye has had permanent damage from multiple inflammations (was 2 hours away from losing my eye last time), so that makes it even more difficult.
I can't even remember what 20/20 is.

I can't even remember what 20/20 is. Oh mine are fucked. Half blind in left eye from cricket practice which tore the retina and right eye was mauled by a rottweiler which fucked up the tear ducts so switches between always crying or dry as fuck. But the bits that work used to work very well.

Until I googled it, I thought 20/20 meant perfect eyesight too.
Have had reading glasses for about 20 years, but now starting to need them for distance stuff. Even my 55" telly from 2m away is looking a little fuzzy around the edges.

People just don't consider the negatives, like having to get all your trousers custom fitted with extra space down one of the legs

I always prided my vision as it was great, but I guess at least I had it for a fairly long time, mid 40s before the problems happened. You do get used to it but yeah, it kinda makes you feel old when things start to deteriorate. Still, you've got to laugh haven't you

I've been wearing glasses for distance since I was 18 but had to get varifocals about 4 years ago as I couldn't read with them on and was having difficulty with just my eyes. Can't really be avoided as it's the ageing process as I'm sure Dave_McCoy could explain at length.

I've wanted glasses since I was a toddler, always thought they look really nice and was deeply disappointed at my lack of a handicap after every eye exam growing up. And my eyes still refuse to give in.
I realise this is stupid of course, and very different for people who actually need glasses and are forced to wear them to function.

I wear glasses again these days (had about twenty years of contact lenses in the middle), and I genuinely find glasses on other people an attractive feature.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever though anybody actually looked less attractive in glasses. That said, I wouldn't mind wearing contacts again in the future.

As User Whizzo says, I could indeed bore you with why you need glasses etc. Also, we usually call it 6/6 in the UK, but its the same thing as 20/20, I'm just being pedantic. Basically though 6/6 is good enough and if you see that without glasses you win.

I'm mildly short sighted, can function well enough just can't read things at more than a few metres.
Have stigmatism too, so the biggest difference with glasses is that I can actually see lights and starts at night as actual defined shapes, not just just blurry star shapes.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever though anybody actually looked less attractive in glasses. (That's in agreement to your point, btw ) On myself specifically I could take them or leave them tbh (well I can't leave them, I kind of need them, but you know) but on others I've never found it an unattractive feature either. It's a bigger plus on some than others, to be fair, but it never makes them look worse to me.

I'm going to become the biggest pedant ever soon. I won't correct every misused optical term...I really want to though Perhaps we need an optics thread where people can answer and cut through optical questions and bullshit you might be told.

Danno can tell something is from the Big Bang theory by sight? He’s the user that should be banned.
Actually, banning is too good for him.

Being incredibly short sighted with knackered eyes, that would be of interest to me.
