I'm think I'm too young to remember Gateway.

Gateway was renamed Somerfield in the mid 90's and then taken over by the Co-op..... I remember unfortunately

Gitways was pretty low rent. Safeway's was positively posh in comparison.

Yeh. For younger viewers, Asda,Sainsbury's and Morrisons had quite a takeover battle for Safeway's with Morrisons eventually clinching the deal.

Disclaimer: I worked at Safeway's for years in school/uni holidays, weekends. It was bloody ace tbh. Pay was good back then for part time and I learned important skills like how to do the bare minimum and get away with it. (Although once I did get caught and my scary boss hauled me over the coals before school).

Work Colleague: "Where did you used to work before here?"
Me: "I was with Comet for almost a decade."
Work Colleague: "What's Comet?"
Me: "It was a national chain of electrical stores, that had been around for 75 years until it was taken over by the same asset-stripping vultures who ran MFI into the ground and then did the same to us, and while over 7000 of us lost our jobs and wondered just how bad the equally vulture-like administrators they appointed would screw us out of redundancy, the CEO of that shower of cunts was on a Carribean holiday."
Work Colleague: " ... ... ... What was MFI?"

That's what happened to Comet? I honestly never knew that was the circumstances surrounding its demise.

When it became known that those OpCapita bastards started trading without credit insurance, all the suppliers suddenly and quite understandably didn't want anything to do with the business anymore. Next thing you know "Deloitte have been appointed as Administrators" and there are security guards in your store to stop you from looting what remains of your own workplace.

I do remember Gateway...did Happy Shopper make it further north, it was a big chain down here in the South West (franchise model, but very cheap and poor quality).
Happy Crapper as we kids called it.

I like the small happy shopper near me as a kid. Had actual pick and mix, sweets were 1 or 2p and you'd put them into a paper bag.
Can't do that now, it's political correctness gone mad.

Ahhh the irony of Happy Shopper which was in fact for people who were not happy because they had to shop at Happy Shopper or shit like Kwik Save.

We had a Fine Fare in Congleton. Also the Lennon’s, which became Gateway, then Somerfield was it? It’s now a Home Bargains or B & M; the former, I think.
Lennon’s also had a little off licence across the road from the main store.
The Key Market was in Biddulph.

We had one not too far from us. I still recall the lovely orange on brown colour scheme.
There was another one I was talking about the other day. Willie Low's. Don't know if that was more a Scotland one though.

That's the one.
Can't remember what one had the value stuff that was literally just wrapped up in plain yellow plastic.
My mum dressed me up like a bag of crisps one halloween using that as inspiration. Yellow bag, black writing. I looked amazing.

All of the jam talk in the other thread has made me think "oooh, I could make some raspberry jam!"
Getting excited by the prospect of making jam... What happened to me?!

Talking of orange colour schemes - I've been rolling with some homemade custom CSS on this site this week as my ageing eyes much prefer a dark background. Just cutting out the top Font Geek banner and reducing avatar size means a lot less scrolling to read the guff on the site : Before: After: Still a few things to clean up but it's er...night and day difference.

We had a Nisa nearby, could never decide if it was posh or not. I think Cullens was sort of upmarket though
