I've yet to find a toaster that matches the toast done under a gas-fire grill. I don't have a gas grill, so use a toaster, but it's just never as good. Yet to find a toaster that leaves the inner bread so fluffy. Have you tried the $500 one posted above yet?

Well there you go. But even in your perfectly standardised toaster knob world you’d still have to fiddle with it for the 2nd round of slices on account of a warm toaster needing less time than a cold one.

I vetoed the Dualit numerous times, seemed a ludicrous amount of money to spend on a toaster. But tbf, as Jeeps says, it is god's own toaster. Wife now wants the matching kettle. We live in a hard water area though and it'll be ruined in no time. And who can be fucked filtering water before boiling.

Get a really expensive water filter and then you'll feel financial pressure to use it.

Pro tip for the professional toasters - warm the plate you’re about to put it on. Putting hot toast on a room temp plate is where you get that annoying condensation from that can make the underside all soggy.

When Im dictator of this country, I would standardise toaster settings. I have what my wife lovingly calls 'pussy toast' (because I toast my bread like a pussy) and its really tricky to dial that in on a new toaster. Settings? You mean those dials do something? I assumed they were just 'sexy' dials. I just push the bread down and then if it pops up and is still not toast, I put it down again and check on it until it's toast. Though, to be honest, I've just started using the grill instead. Less pressing down.

Get a really expensive water filter and then you'll feel financial pressure to use it. Neighbours bought one of those massive (literally) 8l ones for their really expensive coffee machine, so now I really want one. Nowhere to put it though.

I would like one of those massive filters too, have very limescaley water that frequently results in bits in tea. It's a living nightmare.

I got one of those. The wife will only drink fridge water and I really cant be arsed descaling things so its a win/win.
One of those really benign 'best money I ever spent' things along side the soda stream.

I've got a smaller one as I also only like chilled water. But no room to store one in the fridge

You lot love your toast way too much if you're spending that much on a toaster. That's rice cooker money.

Rice cookers are the one single purpose device that it’s worth shelling out for some of the nicer Japanese ones with fuzzy logic. Not because it’ll introduce you to new culinary heights hitherto unforeseen in your kitchen, but because it has absolute consistency in bulk and timing, whereas cheaper ones are inconsistent. Rice isn’t difficult but it’s also annoying.

Yeah, gotta agree, absolutely heart my rice cooker. Rinse, chuck it on, forget about it. Keeps it warm for hours after it's cooked.

I warm the butter first by quenelling it then dunking in my coffee for ten seconds.

Put rice in a pan with double the amount of water, put the lid on, heat until boiling, turn heat off and leave for 15 minutes.
Same perfect rice every time.

Yeah a good rice cooker is great, even if steaming rice isn't hard, but you have to vary the amount of time depending on the quantity cooked etc. Though the best thing is it just keeps it all warm with the steam trapped in, if you get the timing of the rest of the cooking slightly off.

Now do the same for brown, calrose, sticky, or arborio in a kitchen that fluctuates in temp and humidity. Like I said, rice isn’t difficult, it’s just annoying.

Brown rice 2.25 times the amount of water. Get it to simmering then leave it in the lowest heating setting on your hob for 40 minutes then let it rest.
I’m not against rice cookers but it is another appliance which would probably end up sitting in the cupboard in our house as it’s so easy to do on the hob.

I do 1.66 times the amount of water to white basmati rice in the ceramic microwave cooker we’ve got, because the instructions just said 165g to 275ml, or double that, no other option. There’s always another option*
*mess it up and somehow burn rice

I just whack some water and rice into a pan and boil it for 9 minutes, lid on. Rinse with boiling water, steam for a minute or two, job done.
