I can't justify £70 but once it drops down to a more acceptable sub £40 I'll be all over it.

I’m finding it very much a case of “this is how it all looked in my mind anyway”. Except for where character models have been rejigged a bit I’d be very hard pressed to identify any real technical differences without the two side by side. Not far enough in to say if the AI improvements makes combat less cheeseable though.

I’m the opposite. Was intending to hold off for a price drop as I’ve bought every version and played the game and DLC 4 times. But I ended up watching a comparison vid and was chatting about the story and characters with the gf, and then really wanted to play it.
So I impulse bought it yesterday and have been pretty blown away by how good it looks throughout. Little things that help deliver the characters and narrative, like seeing Joel clearly smirk when he teases Sarah that the watch is stuck, to much bigger general lighting and asset improvements everywhere. The game itself is feeling clunky though, for sure.
Been dying to jump back in today but had boring shit to do first.

I kind of want to get it just to play through the prologue with Sarah (best opening to a game ever imo), but could probably just save myself the money and watch it on YouTube...

Yeah, I don't really think the rest of the game matches up to the intro.

I do wish they had gone the extra mile with in the vein as the Resi Evil remakes in actually mixing the game up. Resi 2 especially proved that you could look absolutely amazing and have the same story beats and important points as the source material but present it in a different way, that in itself justifies the price. This really isn't a remake but a very substantive remaster, remaster plus if you will.

I don’t agree with that - I think this definitely qualifies as a remake by the fact that they’ve literally rebuilt everything and, whether substantial or not, gameplay has been modified throughout. It;s definitely more of a visual heavy update but it’s a disservice to label this as a remaster in any sense.
Regarding remixing the story beats and stuff, I think it’s a case of damned if they do, damned if they don’t, and there’s certainly a lot more risk in cocking that up when the game is so well known/liked/awarded. Unless they could deliver the narrative better than before, which is a big ask, they would have failed in delivery from everyone’s perspective.

Yeah, to me it feels like it’s in this grey area where they’ve put in the work but it’s still the same, if you had to couch it in movie terms it’s like a shot for shot “remake”, so more Psycho than King Kong or something. Only without Vince Vaughn and not shit.

Would've been nice if they'd updated the puzzles a bit instead of just giving a skip puzzle option. Watched a couple of reviews and was reminded of just how shit and dated they are.
And yeah, whoever said it above nailed it. It looks exactly how I remember it looking in my mind.

Unless they could deliver the narrative better than before, which is a big ask, they would have failed in delivery from everyone’s perspective. Well that's why I said substantive remaster or remaster plus. We all know what a remaster means in video games, the second version of the game was just that. Yes the work gone into the visual presentation is exceptional and perhaps the AI has been improved but the structure and beat for beat gameplay is the same as what we played on 2013. If the price has been like 40 or 50 quid I think people would be overlooking these issues, and perhaps it would be damned if you do damned if you don't but at this moment it sticks in the craw a bit. Also no one's asking for a change in narrative, like I said before Resi 2 remake has essentially the same narrative beats but some stuff is changed up to keep it familiar yet fresh, hearing the Digital Foundry Direct they even said it's fundamentally the same game underneath which is a purely YMMV.

Anyway I hope the upcoming Dead Space and Max Payne remakes actually mix things up gameplay wise.

After reading everyones comments here and across the web, I didn’t buy it.
But tonight I was so bored, I just went for it.
What the actual fuck. What the actual fuck is everyone talking about with this game.
It is by far, THE best £70 I have spent on my PS5 since launch.
This version is quite simply, fucking awesome.
It is actually funny how much better this game is, 9 years later, than almost every single game that’s come after it.
It is the best game I’ve played since TLOU 9 years ago.
The graphics are incredible (wtf are you guys talking about above?!).
The audio is incredible. 3D audio is blowing my mind on this.
The ambient sounds are incredible.
The level of work they’ve put into this is incredible.
Even the thunderstorms and rain are the best I’ve ever seen in any game, ever.
What. The. Actual. Fuck has everyone across the web been talking about. Is this a ‘abuse Naughty Dog because it’s cool’ thing?
This is like having a Mario 64 remake, a total makeover, priced at £70. We’d buy it in an instant. It’s as good of a proposition as that.
One of the greatest games of all time looks and feels absolutely amazing on PS5.

No, he will be too busy explaining to everyone why the ps5 price increase is a good thing and that the addition of an extra tenner to a game price only benefits us.

I'm still surprised by the revelation that I would spend 70 quid on a remake of Mario64.

Lol, I refused to even spend £35 on the recent 3D Mario remastered collection. No fucking way would I spend £70 on a remake of anything, ever!
Bully for you that you're enjoying it though, Worlds. Looking forward to playing it when it drops to a sensible price.

Heh, see most people over on the PS5 subreddit see this bizarre rant as some form of odd satire as well.

I platinumed this on Monday, and rolled straight into Pt2. Really all of the gameplay complaints of Pt1 disappear in the sequel - Ellie is more agile, there are clear quality of life-style improvements in virtually every area, making actions and animations more fluid and supporting player intent. Just generally less cumbersome and frustrating. Obviously it was 7 years later so it should play better, but it’s very noticeable playing them back to back, especially when they now look mostly identical so the focus is purely on the interactive elements.
Pt1 is still a nice upgrade though. Combat encounters do play differently to the original. As I mentioned previously I’ve played TLoU at least 4 times, so I know the game very well, and I had to modify my approach in every fight. It’s not night and day different but I couldn’t resort to the same pathing and combat choices as I had done every time previously. A small addition but it was nice and felt fresher. The other little additions that I appreciated were the UI and accessibility updates, and the workbench animations when you upgrade your weapons, all of which were retrofitted from Pt2 (the workbench animus are obviously new but the design is from the second game). It makes the 2 games feel very cohesive now, and despite the gameplay still feeling older they don’t quite feel 7 years apart. If you like or haven’t played the game yet, Pt1 is definitely worth playing at whatever price point you’re happy with paying.
Very much enjoying my second run of Pt2 atm too.
