We were awful under Bobby Robson by he had genuinely world class players in several positions - Lineker, Gascoigne, Platt for a start, all technically good enough to play abroad

We are also at a stage where a lot of the other International teams are weaker, Germany and Italy are in some of the worst states they have ever been. Argentina are nowhere near their best either and neither are the Netherlands.

The rest are just bodies though, just there to make up the numbers |

I didn't see the game, watched far too many friendlies. Dressing them up in this ain't fooling anyone. From what I have seen of the last few games, tue players look fucked and need a break. The calendar needs proper reform, playing so many games after a long season is daft.

Southgate is a tough one to call. On any given match day he often seems not quite competent enough to match the world class managers but his record at big tournaments is better than most (previous English managers). And he's responsible for terminating the Ireland careers of Rice and Grealish, years in advance of them stepping up to the England mark, so he has something. He just seems to be in almost the right job for himself and almost the right job for England but not quite being either to the full extent. Benefittimg and harming both parties.

Agreed but I've got a bad feeling that the only reform on the cards right now is an increase in games with the new and "improved" Champions League setup and all... The worst thing is, at this point it would probably take players starting to faint on the pitch (or a straight up strike, but who's going to risk that...) for anyone to think about lightening up the schedule. That ad money is too tasty... |
