It's probably to do with a number of factors -
She's pretty much all most people can remember. Only those around 75 and above actually properly remember having another monarch.
She seems reasonably down to earth and game for a laugh - see the Bond and Paddington bits.
She's pretty much got the grace and duty thing nailed. Never says a bad word and never puts a foot wrong. Even when faced with the likes of Trump.
She will never, ever be "bettered". Pretty much impossible. I'd argue she's the one keeping the whole house of cards from falling.

I can’t really work it out, either. You ask for something specific and people come out with some general platitudes about how she’s been great for the country or ‘she works hard’.
Whereas in the against column you have fairly specific things like hiding her wealth, having the equality act changed to let her specifically discriminate against black people, protecting a nonce and having her daughter in law murdered.

I think she's liked because she's *perceived* as being relatively benign and harmless. Like a non-cancerous lump.
Yes, there's plenty of crap things she's done, like what Nick mentions, but those have been swept under the rug.
So she's *perceived* as being okay.
So really she's liked because of good PR.

Well she worked really hard at getting those horrible things done. What a true national treasure.

I don't think that was the intention...
It was just an unfortunate side effect of having her boyfriend rubbed out.

Sack em the fuck off.
Hopefully once Liz goes, after the inital balloon of support and emotion, the public will get tired of Brian etc quite quickly and we can start tearing them down

You don't actually think she had Diana killed, right? No but at the same time it is firmly in the 'it wouldnt surprise me' column. They have a well funded ops team, albeit one that is mainly used to cover up the indiscretions of 'top shaggers'.

I'm mostly in the don't really give a shit position. Queen seems alright, "down to Earth" (whatever that means for someone who is as pampered and privileged as she is) and is generally a better ambassador for us than the shitty politicians we get to send out to the world. I obviously don't agree that anyone should have a birthright to such power, but they are fairly innocuous so can be mostly ignored.
In recent years though, I've moved more and more into the get rid of the lot of them camp. As someone already mentioned, I think it is the more nasty brand of nationalism that we have had since 2016. I've bristled over the weekend walking around and seeing flags everywhere in a way that I didn't back in 2012 during the Olympics, for example.
That is just me though and I expect in the wider country there just isn't the appetite to make a change to the monarchy, particularly whilst someone that is seemingly okay is doing it. I don't see people wanting to ditch the system until a real nob takes over and that isn't going to be for a very long time. Even when the Queen goes, Charles isn't going to be around long enough to make many blunders to put people off him. William and Kate seem to have fallen totally in line with the status quo nowadays, so aren't going to rock the boat in anyway.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but I think republicanism will probably get a big boost here once Charles gets in.
I find monarchists to be deeply weird here, but I think a certain amount of inertia sits in when the Queen has been there longer than most of us have been alive. She seems nice, but without her I think (hope) it all falls apart.

Is there any way we can scrap the royals and not have a president? I'm no fan of the firm but the idea of having a head of state elected by popular vote fills me with dread.

I just want a (relatively) benevolent dictator like the Discworld's Havelock Vetinari.
I'd even settle for a ruthless but competent tyrant like Westeros's Tywin Lannister.
Both were played by Charles Dance, so can we just have Charles Dance as head of state? But he has to stay in role.

I was freaked out all day by the gold carriage "hologram" I read about - I thought it was the whole carriage, not just a shitty projection of Liz in the window. I couldn't work out why no one was talking about the implications of this amazing tech....
How about tourism though? Look at France and the USA - practically no tourists. The guarantee of an audience with a senior Royal keeps the UK tourist industry afloat?

Yeah ultimately it feels like the country is fine with the monarchy because she's relatively inoffensive with her position.
Once that changes, and I can see Charles changing things, then the conversation gathers steam.
If somehow it bypasses Charles and goes to William it could survive perhaps, as he's as inoffensive as his grandma.

Kowtowing to our betters is part of the national psyche though, I don't think it will be so easy to get rid of them even after the Queen goes. Americans love their guns and murder, Britons love posh twats keeping them in their place.

"The Queen’s courtiers banned “coloured immigrants or foreigners” from serving in clerical roles in the royal household until at least the late 1960s... It is unclear when the practice ended. Buckingham Palace refused to answer questions about the ban and when it was revoked. It said its records showed people from ethnic minority backgrounds being employed in the 1990s. It added that before that decade, it did not keep records on the racial backgrounds of employees." Nick with the selective reading.

She could also in theory commit any imaginable crime she wanted - possibly anywhere in the world - and escape punishment. The law literally does not apply to her and we rely on her good behaviour. It's a bit iffy to make it a race thing

It's a bit iffy to make it a race thing I listed several things, the 'race thing' was highlighted because chopsen hadnt heard of it. Im not 'making' it anything other than the fact that theres a fairly substantial list of quantifiable Bad Stuff that has happened during her reign.
