I’ll look forward to it, as always. I’ll try to remember my underwear next time.

50% off on Xbox at the moment.
How much have they improved it over the original release?

It's still the same stiff game that isn't really that scary with incredibly limited enemy variety, a melee system that doesn't hold up with multiple enemies around you and some strange gameplay decisions such as having to stop what you're doing and heal which is err a decision especially in the incredibly tedious boss fights. It still baffles me that these guys made the original Dead Space games and came up with a lesser product. It does look incredible pretty though.

That's a shame. I'm going to guess the studio are likely moving onto something else now rather than continuing to fix this.
Might see how many points I've got left and still buy it.

I played this a couple of months ago. I am a huge fan of the Dead Space series, but I knew this game had its shortcomings and so I set my expectations low. Turns out it was a good job I set those expectations low. The game becomes quite a slog from the half way point. It doesn't throw any new ideas at you and there is very little enemy variety. The game isn't that long, prob about 8-9 hours and I was glad when it was over. Overall, I would give it a very generous 6/10.
Just replay the Dead Space trilogy again is my advice. You will realise that Dead Space 3 is actually a very decent game and still much better than the Callisto Protocol. If you have an Xbox, they still look and play great, the 2nd and 3rd games were boosted to 60fps.

Were the issues people had with this game - the combat and enemy variety, for instance - things that could actually *be* fixed?
I know it had some technical issues, such as massive frame drops, and presumably those can be patched if they haven't already; however, from the reviews I read and the footage I watched, I got the impression that most of the criticisms stemmed from gameplay systems that people simply didn't like.

It's the gameplay design choices, you can't really fix a lack of exploration or a melee combat system and the AI that goes with that. A lot of it is just baked in.

I quite liked it at the time tbh. There was a portion in the latter third that became a bit of a slog but it was nice to play something a bit more linear and focused, and it looked decent too. Solid enough 7-8/10, will definitely pick up this new dlc.

Yeah I got all 3 from Games with Gold so could just end up doing that. Never did give 2 or 3 a go

You won't think you are playing an old game, as I mentioned before they still look and play great. You are doing yourself a disservice by not experiencing DS2

I completely forgot this was on ps plus. I’m going to give this a whirl to completion.
I tried to play the Dead Space remake, but I’ve played it too many times. I just couldn’t be arsed in the end. Hopefully Callisto scratches some itch.

Got it as part of a Humble Choice bundle a couple of months ago, but never got around to actually playing it. Was kind of looking forward to it, even though I knew it got lukewarm reception.
Will probably wait until the nights start to draw in earlier. Even if it isn't hugely scary, I'm sure it will benefit from being played with lights out and sound system turned up. A shortish, 7/10 linear shooter is what I'm hoping for out of it.

Yeah it's a 7/10 experience that got to the 6/10 levels before it got seriously patched with some QoL improvements. I played it recently and honestly forgot how good it looked. It's not terrible but it always came across as odd that a game made by ex developers of Dead Space produced something that was fundamentally a spiritual successor to that game but did the bread and butter stuff worse.

I'm quite enjoying it, despite the learning curve for combat. I've heard the boss battles will be a bit of a pain..

They're not really that difficult. Very monotonous. Last boss is a proper difficulty spike though.

Apparently there were meant to be more and more diverse ones but they got rushed by the publisher to release a few months early. I kind of doubt it though as surely by that stage you would have things like boss battles in place...

Perhaps more polishing and whatnot but actually creating new bosses, animating them and testing them in 3 months?! It always feels like the truth is in the middle somewhere.

I liked this game when I played it on PS5 after it was in PS+. The main flaws are in the combat - the melee system never quite feels good enough, the guns are bland and the telekinesis is woefully underused. Perhaps a few more months in the oven would have improved it, but who knows.
It is very good looking though.
Not sure I’ll play it again ever - whereas Dead Space did have me back for another run, even before the Remaster.

I quite like the melee combat. It reminds me a bit of Riddick & Condemned, in that you're blocking/avoiding. It does feel a little unforgiving at times, so maybe it needed a bit more tweaking.

Just started this (of course, it was free on the Epic store). Only two hours in, and already I can't stand any of the characters. The melee doesn't feel great, but it's not giving me too much trouble so far. I guess it's going to get a lot harder though.
I'll say on the technical side, I'm pleasantly surprised. Not seeing any stutter so far, granted I'm playing on 30fps, but with the framerate cap it does run pretty well on the laptop, even at medium settings if I wanted... whereas the Dead Space remake didn't run well at all, no matter the settings. It goes to show which game had a last-gen version too.
I had read about the stutter issues at launch, but maybe they managed to fix them?

Yeah, the characters are really hateful. Part of what makes a good game, is that I want to invest somewhat into their story, and keep them alive..

I’m 2 or 3 hours into it and also enjoying it. I decided on this over dead space remake as even if it ends up worse it’s a new experience. Pretty sexy looking as well, upgraded my baton as so far it seems like most fights are in your face.
