Managed to get it for £50 ish on the the PS5
They have gone for the mainstream, which though understandable from a squeeze as much money out of them view was bound to piss off the hardcore, hence the crying.
Action RPG with emphasis on the action, the writing is nowhere near Baldur's gate levels.
Having said that enjoying it so far, tonnes of polish and combat system has kept me interested

Yeah I've just started it for the first time too. Took 9 hours on the character creation screen as normal. Like it so far, quite like the dialogue and the action seems good. It feels like you're about to set off on a massive adventure already.

Heh, that’s another thing I thought were all pretty awful If they wanted actually good, believable tattoo designs - hire a tattoo artist to create them. I know it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme, but in the same way they’ve had a lot of praise over the hairstyles present, you need to have someone that understands the art form to replicate it digitally.

Just picked this up, happy to pay the £50 for Steam version.
It's running very nicely on my 4yr old pc with 2080 super, 1080p, high settings not a single hitch. Performance feels polished and it looks very pretty.
More action style gameplay, exploration is light so far but fun. Combat feels satisfying although it's often not obvious when you've taken a health bar draining hit. I almost died at the lyrium ghoul boss fight but so far difficulty seems fair on normal.
I'm looking the focused plot & mission structure so far.
Yeah it seems much more basic than DA:O but to be honest that doesn't feel like a bad thing yet.

A day late and a dollar short, as usual, but YouTube on desktop/laptop - with an adblocker cranked up to 11, and a browser plugin to hide all the terrible shit - is a fine experience, in my view. Using the app on a phone or tablet, on the other hand, is a very different story - for instance, why does the algorithm think that because I watched a few Karp* videos, I automatically want to see something called 'Comedians DESTROYING woke hecklers'? The fuck does that have to do with anything I actually searched for? Anyhow, glad to see that everyone seems to be enjoying Veilguard * A rock band from Tumwater, Washington.

I’ve got a full house of companions now and Emmrich really does turn the whole thing a bit Disney. It’s been there bubbling under the surface (Lucanis was the early one) but once you get the whole team together in a room and you see all the body shapes, costumes, pets and accents it’s impossible not see the whole thing as a kind of Disney fantasy Avengers.
Luckily, I like Disney and the Avengers.
It definitely feels like they have tried to make the game with as little resistance as possible in appealing to the widest audience, which ironically has made a few groups take the most offence.

I haven't progressed that far in the story yet as I've taken every opportunity so far to go off-piste and explore as much as I can, so I was at 9 hours playtime before I recruited Puss In Boots Lucanis.
10 hours before I found a decent looking armour that didn't have shoulder pads down to the fucking knees.
Just now taken on a level 25 boss on the rooftops of Treviso as a level 13 rogue, and after three attempts I managed it with barely any health left. Would have been far more celebratory about it, but earning a single skill point for such a feat seemed like meagre reward.
Still thoroughly enjoying it, and thanks to the GeForce Experience app now recognising the games' existence, it's done a bit of settings optimising and my GPU is not as close to melting point as it was.

3 hours in so far (30 mins of that creating the best hair styled character in thedas). Love it so far and to my shock I love the art style. When those first trailers came out I was fully on the hate train but turns out i dig it.
Looks incredible on pc and everything from the music to the animations and ray tracing are top drawer.

I really am enjoying that hero characters and NPCs have the same level of facial quality. I do miss the Search button from DAI that would highlight collectibles though.
I've seen so many little references to the previous games, even if it's a short music cue or a mention of a name in a codex entry.

I’m a female character and I’ve been adventurering with three other females for nearly all of that 5 hours and I’d like some frankfurter up in the mix.

Ok I'm about 22 hours in, I have the 5th companion now.
I do a lot of exploring and what had become evident to me is just how large this game is. There is just so much to see on your travels. Initially I thought is was on the same scale as something like Mass Effect, the levels seemed similar is size and structure. However it is much larger than that, some of these levels keep opening up and revealing new areas, they become quite large in scope.
What makes it more impressive to me is the fact this isn't an open world game. It's very rare you get detailed hand crafted areas on a scale like this. Round every corner is breathtaking vistas, interesting architecture and statues, along with secrets to find.
Unless this game shits the bed, which is very unlikely, this may be my game of the year. I think I am slightly addicted.
They don't make games like this anymore, and I'm cherishing every moment.
P.s. still playing on hard mode and it's quite testing at times. Seems a nice challenge though and I recommend it if you are half decent at games.

Only about 3 hours in not done much yet but the combat is promising. Already has a couple of fights where I’ve done something to make me pleased with myself.
At the moment it reminds me of the god of war reboot and oddly immortals Fenyx. I can’t pin what it is, whether it’s the stylised graphics or light hearted tone I don’t know. It’s got BioWare in there too.

Haha I was thinking the same, although it does make a refreshing change not having any male leads so early on. The woman with the mortar board hat is odds on to be my first romance victim. I was wondering where I'd heard Ballara's voice before and the actor plays basically the same character (ditzy warrior nerd Sentinel Dax) in Anthem.

Much of the criticism I‘ve seen (as a separate point, not at all referring to you, Derbs) reminds me of why I didn‘t like Kotor all these years ago, funnily enough. Not the idiotic right-wing criticism, of course, but about the writing, combat, level design. I seem to have made my peace with it, though, I love Veilguard so far.

I always think that if I can meet a trans person in real life (which I have, my Mother has lived next door to 2 separate trans people in the last 20 years), then why the fuck should they not be represented in a game. I don't understand what peoples issue is. I would like to see how they react if they ever met a trans person in real life, because I would hope it's not with the same appalling attitude that they demonstrate online.
I do take a little but of umbrage if a game becomes too 'preachy', games are about escapism at the end of the day and I would be the same whatever the subject matter. I certainly won't be losing my shit over it though.

Yeah, but it's not actually that. For a similar example of diversity you have BG3, who largely do the same thing with a certain amount of seriousness. In Veilguard , due to the writing, characterisation, designs and art style, it does come across as very, very "Disney".
There's a comicbook artist I follow on socials named Mark Brooks. He's been doing a series for the last handful of months where he Disneyfies different groups of characters from different things - Xmen, Avengers, What We Do in the Shadows - I'm sure you could google them to find the results. If he did the Veilguard characters in that style you would be forgiven for thinking it's concept art.

It's all smoke and mirrors. I've got 90something% of the Elven forest open and even where you see large open areas, etc., the actual play space in any given area is a corridor with a room and more corridors connecting more rooms. You're constantly kept on the pathway that is intended and they're all very narrow. Every location is the same. They're twisty and use multiple levels so they "feel" complex but they're not very large at all and you're always hemmed in. These are metroidvania play spaces and we've seen those doing larger, less obviously restricted, and more involving hand-crafted areas than are on offer here for a while - Darksiders, Batman (the first), the Dad of War games, etc. I guess this is part of where you're seeing the divergence of opinion in what the game delivers mechanically. It's seeing the trick and accepting at face value that it's magic, or seeing it and recognising that it's just slight of hand. I think it's just a lot more obvious here than in other gaming examples where they hide the boundaries a bit better.

Derblington Hey I don't disagree with you at all. I nearly called it a Matroidvania myself, the levels feel similar in size and scope as say Jedi Fallen Order, probably somewhat smaller perhaps. All I know is that I was exploring one particular part of the Crossroads yesterday for some time and it caught me by surprise how much there was to see and do.
