Not having bosses is weird though. They're usually some of the highlights of a game

Not to me. I can't stand the fucking things.
There is an end game boss and some lurking around you can engage, but overall it's a more exploratory/sedate experience.
It's definitely an each to their own game though, yeah.

I've been playing the Siege of Paris DLC in AC: Valhalla.
The negatives:
There are infinitely repeating micro-missions that you can do to build reputation with a rebel faction. A unique armour set is tied to this. It a crappy and unfun idea in the main content, in the Ireland DLC, and so it is again here. I hate this kind of thing.
France basically looks like Ireland. England is only more visually interesting because it is the main game so more time was invested in it. I mean, visually it's nice, but it's not very distinct. Which is a shame because if one series embodies the term 'virtual tourism' it might well be Assassin's Creed.
The Positives.
Blackbox missions are back. They should have never gone away, really. You don't have to take out the targets in these ways if you don't want, but if you're tired of being a Viking Anton Chigurh (i read a review that used a line this, that almost perfectly sums up the main game), it's a nice change of pace.
They also kind of brought back the types of 'mysteries' from the main game that were little missions... but they were nowhere near as fun or intricate or interesting as the likes of 'Smack my Bishop' from the main game.
Basically, it's just more Valhalla.

Pullblox on the 3DS. Totally addicted to it. I had it since launch but somehow never completed it. The special challenges really are challenging.

Death's Door - A cross between a 2D Zelda for puzzles and a mash of souls-like qualities wrapped up in a Metroidvania type world.
It's definitely one of the best games I have played this year, looks great, has good combat and the whole world is pretty cool to explore with some decent secrets. Really enjoying it so far.

Still playing Humankind, but I felt like I had a mini-revelation on it today. In Civ, I always felt like I preferred the start of the game, and maybe that's down to being locked into the playstyle for each empire, which meaningful choices seeming to ebb away in mid/late-game, but adapting my playstyle and choices (in directions I might never have considered from the start), is quite cool. If only the game was clever enough to synthesise some kind of hybrid representation of the choices you've made (buildings, units, unit voices) that might really allow you to form some brand new civ that is a true "what-if" representation of alternate history ideas. The fact that I'm really pondering choices in the mid-late game is a good plus for this, although it is still not as charming as is thinks it is.

I'm right at the end of Axiom Verge 2. I've completed it, and reloaded my last save again so I can spend some time hoovering up. On 72% items and 92% map. Absolutely loved it. Great controls, good levels, some really interesting stuff going on with alternate realities, really good music, and only a handful of (mostly optional) bosses - thank fuck. The first one has been on my list to check out for years. Should I go from the start or does either work?

I can only vouch for the first one but since it's proper retro anyway, it's still as good as when it came out. I love Axiom Verge. If you want a NES style Metroid game, it's a good bet you'll enjoy it. Weapons are really investive (and often you don't get the upgrade you think you will). Personally I like the bosses and don't remember getting stuck too much, but I am the kind of person who shoots every wall in the game out of habit just to be sure. Secrets!

Yeah, you can go for either. They're not linked (well, there's a bit of a link between them later on but it's nothing huge). Both have the same style, artwork, design and music. First one is more super metroid but with more bosses, second one is more relaxed. Both good in their own ways imo.

RDR 2 (PC)
Replaying this beauty after a couple of years away from it, I finished it on PS4.
I don’t think it’s changed much since I last played but at least they sorted the weapons out so you can stick those Cattleman Revolvers (and the rest) in the bloody locker instead of being on the horse all the time.
It’s a fair bit buggy on PC and the Nvidia Experience optimises it so that I’m getting a steady 40fps which is not great. It basically sets everything to Ultra. I have a pretty good PC (Ryzen 9 3900X, 3070 OC, 32gb RAM etc) but I don’t think it’s good enough to run everything on ultra so I have to fiddle about with the graphics quite a lot just to get a much better 60fps
Just a great game to get immersed in (until a bug brings you straight back out!)

Moonlighter and New Pokemon Snap.
I’m trying to limit what I’m playing and actually complete games for a change.

MadCaddyDidn't they patch it to include DLSS? I would imagine that'll help massively if you're not already using it. Wasn't a fan of it when I played it, but should really give it another shot...

Valheim with two friends.
One of the best coop games I've ever played. You can noodle about doing your own thing whilst chatting shit with your pals, and then you all join together to smash up the bosses or build another base. The pacing and sense of discovery are just so good.

Picked up Doom Eternal for £13 in the PSN sale. Bargain.
Feels really solid and slick, and 120fps is lovely.
What’s the best graphics mode to be playing it in though? I like high res, fancy graphics and fine with 60fps. ‘Balanced’ mode?

I think they are concentrating on PC given the team is small. But, it's sold ~8 million, so I'd be amazed if MS/Sony aren't in discussions with them about porting to consoles. It would be perfectly suited to consoles/controllers as well.

I'm still playing BOTW but haven't played it in a few weeks. I started it during Chrimbo last year after the 5 day travel reprieve got cancelled due to the Kent variant. I've probably clocked up over 25 hours but haven't gotten very far. The last I played a few weeks ago I had to hide from a Lynel and collect shock arrows to use them against this elephant-like guardian or something, in the Zora Domain. I got the arrows but haven't gone to fight it yet.
I've been enjoying it but have found it somewhat difficult...and bloody massive. It took me ages to get up the mountain to find the old man and get the warm doublet.
How much longer do I have to get to the end, another 50-60 hours? I feel like if I keep playing at the pace I am, it'll take double that.

According to my Switch I played over 200 hours in BOTW in a single playthrough. There's just so much stuff to find and get distracted by. I guess if you just stick to the main story you could finish it a lot quicker but I found it way more fun to just amble around and see what I could find. The game rewards exploration like no other IMO, every time you see something that looks interesting 99% of the time there will be something there to do. A lot of open worlds are just empty scenery I find, but not BOTW

It took a while for BoTW to click with me but once it did I fell in love with it. Its an incredible game and the sense of discovery never gets old.

The game rewards exploration like no other IMO, every time you see something that looks interesting 99% of the time there will be something there to do. A lot of open worlds are just empty scenery I find, but not BOTW See, I don't get this at all. For me, with the upgrade spheres all being locked inside shrines, weapons breaking and no new abilities after what you get at the start, the game just had nothing to reward exploration with. In my experience it was just a lot of recycled content - another stone thing to fight, another giant cyclops, another near indentical stable, about a million Koroks. Even when I found a good weapon, it just went straight into the inventory until it was the worst one I had, at which point I didn't care about it - it was just another weapon. I got as far as getting the master sword and when I found out even that breaks, I just couldn't be bothered anymore
I'm not the kind of person who thinks a game everyone loves is crap just because I don't like it but BotW is a game that I hear everything people say about why they love it but don't see any of those things in the actual game
I've been playing Skyward Sword and you find rupees all over the place and there's loads of things to spend them on. Finding heart pieces and things makes exploring feel much more worthwhile

If you're looking for a Metroid fix, look no further than AV1, that game is Metroid. AV2 is very different, I hate it and don't understand how anyone could enjoy it, but that may be again just differing opinions. What's not opinion though is that AV1 is as close to Metroid as it gets, in style and everything. AV1 is an unashamed Metroid clone, AV2 tries to do something different.

Warzone. I think I’m the only EG’er who plays it but it’s genuinely been great throughout. It needs some new content and they often fuck the balancing but I only play occasionally and it’s been fine. I’m a bit shit so I seldom get cheaters in my lobby.
Really looking forward to Battlefield but I loved this.

I used to play loads Mac but the cheaters have ruined it for me. Pretty much everyone I know has stopped playing until they sort it as well now. It's a situation of their own creating though, they have ignored it for ages without anything other than the occasional we banned 50k players knowing full well they would just create a new account.

Just started Fez and maybe 20 minutes in I can already tell this isn’t for me... it’s a shame because I like the artwork and it was so well reviewed, but eh. Onto Dragon Age: Origins now!
