I'm there in terms of not really wanting to climb much higher, too much faff and loads more work, but I'm 42 and have to battle feelings that I should be aiming higher. I have peers that are director and VP level and I need to stop comparing myself to them. I'm well paid, happy enough (doing a career I'd rather not, but mostly enjoy the work) and have finally found a work life balance that is right. If I could retire now though you bet I bloody well would. That’s totally relatable. It’s such a load off when you reach the point where you can accept that you won’t rise further. That was a big Brexit silver lining for me - as a UK eurocrat it was perfectly reasonable to forget about further promotion.

So what do people reckon they need to retire? I’m like Doug’, constantly checking my spreadsheet and think three more years.
Mind you, the job security is zilch at the moment and I worry about having to move elsewhere before crossing the line. Especially as I think I’d struggle to get my current salary anywhere else.
Overall I think I need 40k a year for me and the mrs (who doesn’t work, and no pension)

If I’m honest with myself, the period where I could and should have really pushed for a career was the period when I was spending most time spamming the EG forum, 20/25 years ago. So really it’s your fault.

They say that at around 60, you should have about 6-11 times your yearly salary saved.
I don't know if that factors in private pensions and/or if you've qualified for full state pension
I do need to start looking at this and have reminders to do it

6-11 is quite the range...

Yeah it's a bit mad. I think it's related to how many other pensions you have.
I'm qualified for full state pension at whatever age it's going to be when I get there and 3 private ones but they'll last about half an hour so I guess it's working till I can obtain state pension and then obviously get hit by a bus the day before I can take it out.

A lot depends on when I can pay the mortgage off really. Plan has always been to get it down to such a level that I can pay off the remaining with a lump sum that I'll get at 60 (also when I can take my work pension). I could continue until 67 and have a very good pension, but fuck that.

Haha fucking hell, I probably won't even have one year of my salary saved at 60. Which is a concern as my salary is shit.

Ditto with Dougs. Could go to 67, but can go at 60, so will likely do that.
Tertiary education & research situation is not likely to get better in the next decade, so totally eyeing thst exit sign.
Further promotions are off the cards, so coasting on in. If the work situation of people leaving all the time allows much of that...

I didn't want to be too graphic, so as to not upset the younger members of the forum. I seriously doubt anyone here is younger than JuniorFE and I'm pretty sure he has had his fair share of graphic images/videos over the years, at least after I unsubscribed from NetNanny

They’ll most likely have assets (such as a house / car) to that level but who the heck has a years salary sat in their bank account? I do but that’s only because I was made redundant at the end of 2023 That 6-11 years worth must include pension pots

Just did our long term financial planning a month or two back. Did a proper budget for first time really, with how much we should spend a month, how much on holidays. We are targeting retirement at 55 from main jobs. Involves saving quite a high % of income, and paying house off earlier than our initial 29 year mortgage would have suggested . We shall see how successful we are! (I expect not very). How much you should have when you retire depends entirely on when you want to retire, and the lifestyle / outgoings you want to sustain. You need a lot more at 50 than 70, duh.

I have no real desire to climb the career ladder as I'm just indifferent. I could do with the extra money but I don't think I'll enjoy having more pressure and accountability for something I don't real passion for.
I'm not going to get hired for something I feel indifferent about anyway.
But that money would sure be useful.
Chance of me being able to retire is pretty slim, though honestly it's the only thing I want to do.
At least I'm mortgage free (in that I don't own a house and it's highly unlikely I'll ever have a big enough deposit to get one).
Just need this premium bond to mature. Any day now.

My next step career wise is to essentially run the company I currently work for, which is a bit of a daunting prospect. But my boss, the owner, is essentially guiding me towards that path when he inevitably has to take things a bit easier. I already run a huge chunk of it as it is, I guess, but I don't currently have the stress of worrying about finances in the same way he does.
