I'm finally free of the first ship and whilst I miss its cosy interior, it's an absolute piece of shit and it's nice to finally be able to enjoy space combat and have enough boot room for more than a single grenade.

The sad thing is that probably every single person here could write a better intro to the game, it makes it look like Bethesda either don't care or they're incompetent. And there's a lot of stuff like that.

I just wish I could store all my cargo in my big stupid ship that’s a sitting duck for pirates, and zip around in the fast, heavily armed ship I stole that has a glove-box for a cargo hold

I wouldn’t fancy being a colonist if this is the future of humanity. Earth is fucked. Imagine living on Mercury or another atmosphere free rock. Can’t ever go outside without a suit on, couped up in a habitat and one technical malfunction could be the spectacular end of you. Bleak.

Guys I’ve come to some conclusions about Starfield. It isn’t the best game ever; it isn’t the worst game ever; it has absolutely brilliant doors. I think that’s about it. If I could marry a door, it would be Starfield’s

That's why I always get mad at commentaries like "the rich are planning to leave Earth". So dumb. Even an Earth that is 100 times shittier than now will be a million times better than any other reachable planet.
People want to terraform Mars as an escape plan, but we can't even keep a perfectly fine atmosphere in check.

Yeah, I posted about this a couple days ago but put it in spoiler tags because it felt exploit-y. Gave me Kingdom Hearts gummi ship vibes when I saw it Ah sorry missed that. Yes it's exploity and I won't be doing it for that reason, but it's just a fun bit of ingenuity. Same as putting cooking pots on heads in Skyrim. Unintended consequences of player freedom is so Bethesda, long may they continue to leave room for this sort of nonsense.

You can punch stuff out of buildings to be able to pick them up without it being theft.

Even though I have only really started the game I managed to grab, what I think, is the gun from Blade Runner - well it's called the Regulator. It certainly packs a punch with 100 damage per shot and one shots low level enemies. In fact it feels pretty OP but makes me feel like Deckard hosing down them replicants. Anyone else nab this?

And there's a lot of stuff like that. To be honest it doesn’t bother me in the slightest. It’s like look you got shit to do because ‘reasons’ now let’s just accept that and get into the real freedom here. There is so much writing, so many tales, some great, some not. It’s an absorbing RPG that lets me play as I wish. Good stuff

RPGs need to be more bold. Start somewhere near the middle with a ship and some decent gear and leave the player to uncover the beginnings in some Freeform manner at a later date.
Without the use of amnesia, like many JRPGs.

There's mission later in the game that involves the kind of awesome first person immersion stuff lots of people were desperate for. Laughed when I played it. They chose to be lame.

DF PC performance video is out. They are fairly scathing of non AMD hardware optimisation. Sounds like a driver patch should make a huge difference to Nvidia GPUs.
Also hyperthreading on Intel CPUs reduces performance. Wtf?

For me this is lacking in exploration. Spent time exploring as much of a planet landing site as possible and it makes space exploration seem quite dull. Running kilo meters across a barren landscape with a few random poi spawning, with nothing much happening in them.
Procedurally generated planets is just not the same as having a huge seamless map to wander around, with hand crafted stuff on in it, which is what Besthesda games are about for me.
That’s not the games fault. It just can’t be reconciled with the ‘1000 planets’ space setting. There is still a load of great things here and I am enjoying getting stuck into the side quests and general vibe of the game.
But it’s missing what I realised I like the most about a Bethesda rpg. Going off in a random direction on a big open world map.

The long barrel mod for this gun is a big part of why I decided to sprint through the Science perks to get to the weapon mod one on Tier 2

Duffman and the couple of others who said this was bad visually/like last gen. You need to get to Specsavers. It's pretty sexy and if it was 60fps and this sexy it would be pretty amazing. Played three hours so far, like the combat enough and most other things but I'm not sure I can play this type of game anymore. Every time I go into my inventory or look at the ship crafting or get into some long conversation or look at the minerals I need for some item all I can think is I don't have time for this. When Fallout 4 came out people were carrying on that it looked exactly the same as 2008’s Fallout 3, which it absolutely did not. I’m not playing Starfield, but when I saw people saying it looks the same as 2015’s Fallout 4 I dusted off the same grain of salt from last time. The engine does upgrade, it’s the moans that don’t.

Yeah, I booted up Fallout 4 the other day to compare. This looks miles ahead.

Yup they've massively improved texture resolution and surfaces, plus added a bunch of post processing effects. It's way better.

The internals of all the spaceship look amazing. Space too. Procedural planetside less impressive for me. Lifeless.

It obviously doesn't look the same as Fallout 4, but it looks the same relatively speaking to other current gen games how FO4 looked compared to its competition back then. Bethesda games never really look all that great.
But it looks good enough. Still a shame they can't figure out loading in the background. I'd gladly give up the possibility to chuck 1000 physically correctly rendered potatos in a room if it meant that they could do away with loading interruptions whenever you enter a building.

Tried to play the pc version on Xbox over steam link to the TV. It seems to be running great but... It will not for the life of me detect the Xbox controller input as anything other than mouse/keyboard input.
Can't do owt at all. Been at it for nearly an hour so have up and just went on the pc instead.

I use vents for the stealth bits in-between running out intermittently and exterminating everything in sight with loud guns and explosives.

Picked up a 412 damage shotgun and now just going to have to go full pirate for incredible ship-boarding cqc action. Sorry Sam Coe, you're not going to like anything from here on in.
Not that you liked anything anyway, moany prick.
