I thought I'd have a quick look this morning and ended up dragging myself to work 90 minutes later. It looks and as others have mentioned /sounds/ great.
There are definitely some cons: I find the pathfinding completely confounding right now - I landed on the first place you are supposed to land on, wandered out and...the directional icon was pointing me back to my ship. I didn't have time to make sense of it but I'm pretty sure I will. The inventory feels cumbersome, though that's mitigated by using favourites / quickslots of course. And I have not a bloody clue how the lockpicking is supposed to work. I wouldn't have minded a bit more of a tutorial there.
Anyway, I wandered off in the wrong direction (wrong in the sense of the quest path) and headed for some structure in the distance where I got in a battle with 20 or so raiders, or whatever they were called. That was, very surprisingly, very enjoyable, with me frantically running around collecting ammo from bodies and then hiding behind pillars gorging on medkits. AI was a bit shit, but still, the actual feel of the guns was pleasing. I also got some sound loot including a special rifle and blade (melee seemed pretty lethal I have to say).
I eventually worked out where I was supposed to go and saved it there...once I had worked out how to save. I suppose I'm just being colossally thick, but the menus didn't feel intuitive at all to me.
I can't wait to get stuck back in after, er, work, which I'm clearly very busy with right now.

Right, that makes sense. Not the best first landing then!

The combat AI in general is pretty bad, in my experience. Bad guys are constantly falling from gantries and walkways during a firefight; they just tend to blunder over the side. On more than one occasion they've even tried to run past me (without attempting to attack me) to get back up the stairs! They shoot explodable objects that their buddies are hiding behind, too. One guy boosted himself up, clipped his head into the ceiling and just died, body hanging limply from the neck downwards. Another chap got his leg stuck in a railing and flailed about wildly until I took pity on him and put him out of his misery.
I swear if I didn't know better I'd have thought this was a parody. I haven't laughed this much playing a game in ages.

From now on it should be a standard feature in all games: 'Please use the Joy-Con to select the size of Mario's penis and testicles.' And also be able to play with them activating HD rumble!

In the fight I mentioned above, I did see one or two enemies actually deliberately jump down from higher levels too, in their defence. Then again, one of the first guys I was fighting got stuck through clipping into a wall or crate and just remained there, running on the spot until I put him out of his misery.

Also wish Bethesda would progress beyond a conversation system where everyone wants to tell you their whole bloody life story at the drop of a hat. With persuasion levelled loads of encounters end up something like:
"I don't care who you are or who sent you, I'm going to kill the Governor's daughter and then we're going to blow up this whole complex!"
*30 seconds later*
"I suppose you're right; violence isn't the answer. We're going to turn ourselves in to the authorities and spend the rest of our lives repenting for our very naughty behaviour. Here's the pin number to my bank account as a thank you. I'll never forget you, best friend. I love you."

So while the only combat I’ve experienced so far has been raiders/pirates during the first planet before you reach New Atlantis, I had no qualm going from “what do you want with Barret?” “Nothing, we just want his ship!” “oh word? Pew pew motherfuckers!”

It's wild that Bethesda get away with such shonky products. I realise that most of the bugs that occur aren't game-breaking but the sheer volume and repetition that every player will encounter creates such an unpolished experience.
I can't think of another studio that has managed to convince the gaming public that jank is endearing and execution doesn't matter, especially considering they are in a fairly unique position of spending a decade on a single title.

Tried to ditch Vasco at New Atlantis (delighted he was not on the ship when I took off) to find that as soon as I exited the ship on the next planet there he was like some sort of unwanted tracking beacon.
/hoping for some point when I can ditch him in the ship/home/base… anywhere will do really!
Am I the only one who doesn’t like him much? I’m starting to feel a bit vascoist. Maybe I just need to give him some time in case his flat monotone voice grows on me.

Once you start the first constellation mission, he'll be left behind and you'll get a new companion for a bit.

I haven’t had the “say my name outloud” moment yet. How soon does that happen? Maybe they didn’t record my name in this like they did in Fallout 4. 0/10

I can't think of another studio that has managed to convince the gaming public that jank is endearing and execution doesn't matter, especially considering they are in a fairly unique position of spending a decade on a single title. My expectations were low, even for Bethesda and whilst factoring in the “least buggy evah” line, but, while it doesn’t crash, it’s riddled with inconsistencies and jank. Voices stopping unexpectedly, or two playing over each other incongruously. Supposedly scary moments being interrupted or spoiled by chirpy incidental music drowning them out, or visa versa. The rough framerate, the constant loading screens, the average dialogue and writing, the inelegant solutions to players interrupting the intended flow and the apparent need to *constantly* collect polystyrene cups. Why do I need “chair” highlighting again by the way? It’s a game routed in design of 15-20 years ago, with, where they’ve been able, a tiny bit of polish to bring little bits more up to date, but not nearly enough to warrant the hype. I think you have to love Bethesda in order to love this, and I haven’t since Morrowind, so I’m not the target market and I’ll stop sniping because I’m sure it’ll get annoying.

Maybe they didn’t record my name in this like they did in Fallout 4. 0/10 My default name in all Bethesda games is Banduur Lachsimaan. Don't ask why, it's just been that way since Morrowind. But I figured - smart, me - if it's going from a pre-recorded list I'd better choose a more anodyne surname...like my own. Vasco called me it once, pretty much as soon as we landed on that first planet. I'm hoping as my reputation grows bandits will be cursing me using my name, and space whores will be beckoning me to their zero-grav boudoirs.

Reading this thread is tough. Need to wait until i get home tonight and I'm stupidly donating blood after work today, so it's going to take longer to get home than usual. There better not be an updates to download, I fired it up last night for the 'sorry you can't play this yet, pauper' message in the hope it would trigger any updating, but it didn't seem to, so fingers crossed.

I think it was more understandable when they were pretty much the only developer making games like this. Like, the things that were special about their games - the scope, intricate world design, the freedom to walk just about anywhere, the roleplaying opportunities - were worth a bit of jank, because you couldn't get this experience anywhere else. The jank was even expected, because their games are so big and complex that it's impossible to get everything working together perfectly. I'm not sure that excuse will fly now, not now that they've got big Microsoft money to polish their games with. And they've got a lot more competitors in the open world scene too, so they can't rely on the "nobody else is doing this" advantage.

Was going to play some Street Fighter but the first thing that popped up when I turned on the Xbox was a bug Starfield splash page. I’m going to space, boys! oh and as for the HDR discussion from a million pages ago, it does run in HDR, as my TV switched to it, and pressing the Xbox Guide button doesn’t say Auto HDR like is the case when it’s faked. But it’s true that there’s no in-game sliders. As long as it uses the system HDR settings and looks good doing it, I’m content. and last bit before I continue, you can tell it’s the old Creation Engine that runs their older games, but it looks well above Fallout 4, and probably the absolute furthest they can stretch this engine. Looks good. Pretty sure I saw DF say it doesn't really work and makes everything washed out. Given its total absence on PC I'm very suspicious as to whether it's been done properly, or whether a rough conversion has been hacked in to the Xbox version to hit a certification point that MS required. I'd definitely suggest trying it off as well as on just to check you actually prefer it on. I don’t know, I’m in New Atlantis and everything looks fine. The initial cave looked maybe a bit overly bright, but it might’ve been the proliferation of lanterns in there. But nothing I’ve seen so far has looked washed out, or dim as SDR games look on PS5, or oversaturated as Auto HDR games look on Series X. Wouldn’t be the first time PC games launched with borked HDR while the console version was fine.
