I don't like the colour palette - everything is washed out (dark areas are just brown). Have tried a couple of mods but they don't do much. Not even sure HDR is working.

For anyone looking to solve their inventory problems with an outpost, think again. Needs a load of investment in skill points, research along with a ton of resources and time fannying about to get working effectively.
You are better off upgrading your ship and using the lodge early on.

Ultra wide is a bit wierd in this game. The start screen is 16:9 so doesn't go to the edges.
When loading, it seems to put a black overlay over the top of the game with your loading screen but the overlay is a few pixels narrower than the game view so I have some lit pixels down either side.
It's not world ending but it's off-putting when in a dark room on a black screen having 2 light strips on either side of my monitor

I’ve decided my favourite citizen is the slanty hat type.
The way they wear their hat like they’ve never even looked in a mirror is to be admired.

Crashed just now, but it’s probably more a problem with my Xbox. I had it crash yesterday while playing Dead or Alive 5 Last Round yesterday, and the apps often hang. Oh well, I should start getting ready for work anyway. 👀

It's wild that Bethesda get away with such shonky products. I realise that most of the bugs that occur aren't game-breaking but the sheer volume and repetition that every player will encounter creates such an unpolished experience. I can't think of another studio that has managed to convince the gaming public that jank is endearing and execution doesn't matter, especially considering they are in a fairly unique position of spending a decade on a single title. I think it was more understandable when they were pretty much the only developer making games like this. Like, the things that were special about their games - the scope, intricate world design, the freedom to walk just about anywhere, the roleplaying opportunities - were worth a bit of jank, because you couldn't get this experience anywhere else. The jank was even expected, because their games are so big and complex that it's impossible to get everything working together perfectly. I'm not sure that excuse will fly now, not now that they've got big Microsoft money to polish their games with. And they've got a lot more competitors in the open world scene too, so they can't rely on the "nobody else is doing this" advantage. I kind of agree but I almost consider Bethesda games their own genre. They are first person immersive RPGs with exploration and a focus on narrative quest designs. I don't think anyone else has successfully managed to create a similar experience of exploring a huge space in first person with lots of fun quests and had fewer bugs. The only exception I can think of is FO: New Vegas which used the same engine anyway and was even buggier. The Outer Worlds, kind of, but that fell well short on all fronts. I can't think of many reasonable equivalents even. Perhaps Prey, which was great, but focused on a much smaller in scale. The project flopped very unfairly so they probably won't even try again. There are millions of third person arpg AAA titles if you want them but they just don't hit the same. So whilst I'd love more polish and smoothness I don't think they are notably behind any games in 'their genre'. What they do is difficult and high risk. We've had 12 years for someone to one up Skyrim. Actually RDR2 is probably the closest I can think of but the third person perspective still isn't quite the same. It's also far more focused on cinematics than exploration and more akin to watching a great western than being a cowboy.

Cyberpunk? (haven't played it so I'm probably talking shit. it was also apparently slightly buggy) “slightly.” Cyberpunk makes this (even today, when it’s been “patched up,”) look like A Link to the Past.

So regarding HDR, I am playing on the Series X and I don't think its broken, but there is issues, which may be part of Bethesda's design.
New Atlantis for example looks great. Lights are bright where they should be and everything looks fine in this city as well as most other places.
Inside caves though, everything has an grey overcast. I actually noticed it change in real time as I entered and left the cave.
Then you also wonder why space is a dark blue, and not total black. Again, its not an HDR issue, the picture is not overcast or anything.
I think some of the issues may not be issues, but rather its part of Bethesda's design or game engine quirks.

Quite a few of the female NPCs look a lot like Foster "My face is tired" Addison of ME:A infamy.

So far I've found the FPS elements better than I expected, and found the RPG do to disappointing. They must have had some help from ID regarding the combat. The AI is weak but the gunplay is much better than I expected.

I chose one of my faster pistols last night, and for a second I thought I was playing Call of Duty.
Ok, that's an obvious exaggeration. But I agree, the combat at times feels very good. Night and day difference to their previous games.

I'm enjoying this as it's more Bethesda comfort food, but the game feels like it lacks a sense of place if that makes sense.
For a game that has a main quest that is focused on exploring the unknown it's a bit lacking in a feeling of exploration like Skyrim and Fallout have. Maybe it's down to not having the connective tissue of a large overworld map and the areas you explore just being nakedly connected by series of waypoints and loading screens.

It does suffer from the usual BethSoft issue in that if you find overpowered equipment you’re basically a god. I found a pistol that one shots everything under level 20, and the Mantis Armor you can get in an early side mission is also quite awesome. The Mantis ship you get is pretty neat too, not much in the way of cargo space or weaponry but it has the largest jump range of any ship I’ve found so far.

I thought people normally moaned because Bethesda dynamically scaled loot to the player level? I can't actually tell if that's what they are doing in this. Seems like it might be more predefined and based on how hard the system is.
One thing that is a bit weird is the quality levels of suits and weapons: balanced, calibrated seems more important than their scaling. It seems to bump the stats more than being rare/epic/legendary which is a bit counterintuitive.

Think it’s only story bosses that scale, dungeons (ie anything planetside not story locked) remain mostly static like Skyrim. but even then the story combat is proving to be a cakewalk. Only had one encounter I had to run away from, and that was because it was required by the story. May have to lock away this kit so a challenge remains.

Yeah, I picked this up last night and in terms of stats, it's roughly where other equipment of the same type I'd been picking up or seeing at traders.

And yeah, the outpost building is annoying. Trying to get some stuff going but I seem to always be missing one specific resource. Tungsten has suddenly become the rarest material in the universe, it seems.

Locking boost pack use behind a skill? Daft when an early given quest requires it?

You can get a decent space suit in the constellation HQ basement which suppose to be behind master level lock but you have to line it up and you can loot it from the display.

Not on Xbox. I'm sure the PC version has options like any other game, but there's no performance mode on console, no.

No I'm on pc. My options are windowed, or borderless fullscreen locked at the desktop resolution. You can use resolution scaling but I just want to pick my own. Never mind.

Only just started playing on Series X, and sorry if this has been already talked about at length (trying to avoid any spoilers) but where the FUCK is HDR?
The game boots with HDR, the title screen is HDR, but the game is not.
Trying to keep my sense of entitlement in check, and really hoping HDR support is added soon, but this is a AAA game in 2023 on Series X. HDR should be a given.

Loving this game so far but the colour filters are absolute dog shit and really distracting - grey space everywhere.
Using the Neutral LUT mod and it's like playing a different game.
