I’ll likely be watching my partner play this tonight and over the weekend. The Digital Foundry video has got me interested, but she is far more tolerable of Bethesda mechanics generally. It does look very nice though.

They aren’t Resident Evil 1 great though. Those are some seriously great non-immersion breaking loading screen doors.

I played until the end of the character creation section this morning, on Steam Deck using the Xbox Cloud Gaming service (while the full install was happening on the Series X). Glory to modern technology.

I was hoping I might have time this morning after everyone else left and before I had to go to work but sadly not. I'll have to kick my wife off the TV tonight and grab a couple of hours!

I really doubt it would be the mega smash hit that it is if you were right. They must have made serious strides from DOS for it to appeal to so many people. I mean, Baldur’s Gate 3 has had a lot more hype, much more coverage in the news cycle, and has a massive mainstream property tied to it. Divinity’s IP has nowhere near Dungeons & Dragon’s exposure or fanbase. The thing that appeals to me about BG3 is that it plays a lot like games I enjoyed 15-20 years ago, rather than todays drab AAA titles. I'm going to give Starfield a fair crack, but my fear is that 10-20 hours in I'll end up getting bored with way too many distractions, that aren't overly interesting, unlike BG3 where I feel they've put in a lot of love and effort into different branches you can go down. Also just because you can make an open world adventure that spans 100-150 hours, doesn't mean you should for the sake of it. Ah a shoe I need to give back to someone who's lost it across a map. Ah quest complete.

My first impression, unfortunately, is that I really, really hate the framerate. I hope I can get used to it, but that alone feels old these days.

It's definitely playable but either the FPS or lag from the pad is very apparent. Motion blur though, that had to go. Immediately. Everytime I turned it looked like a smeary mess.

There’s seems to be a lot of these

Ah splendid. Popped onto the Steam forums, given that it's now officially released, to see if there were any comments on performance. Thread after thread after thread concerning pronoun usage, gender, and "woke" agendas.
Going well then, I see.

Couple of hours in (only, admittedly)- it’s a curious mix of last and this gen. It wins you over a bit and then frustrates and disappoints the next second. Some jarringly poor looking bits, some lovely little touches. The game’s alright, if you dig the Bethesda formula, but it’s delivered in an old feeling package and at yesterday’s framerate. 7/10 feels spot on so far.

The pronoun outrage is hilarious. It's not as if you actually have a choose a pronoun. As far as I can tell, it defaults to the assumed pronoun for your body type - you only have to change it if you want something different. Much like real life.

Any complaints about BG3 where you can be a female looking wizard with a massive cock?! What a time to be alive! Never in my aging game playing mind did I think I would be able to not only decide on the genitiia of my avatar but actually see it in all its glory. To that end my characters in both Cyberpunk and BG3 are sporting lovely growlers...

From now on it should be a standard feature in all games: 'Please use the Joy-Con to select the size of Mario's penis and testicles.'

Ah quest complete. Ironically I think the reason I'm getting on with Starfield so we'll is exactly that it plays like a game from 15 years ago. It's very much the ageing Bethesda formula underneath everything. If you set the graphics to low res (and confined yourself to a few maps tbf), it could be a game from 2008. Very few AAA tropes from the intervening years have penetrated. Legendary/Epic/Rare loot categories and colours is the only one that stands out.

Some of the sound touches are really good however.
The sound design is really top notch in Starfield. Wether it be ambient sounds, the soundtrack, the voice acting. I cannot fault any part of it.
One thing I really love about this game and which no one talks about is how realistic it is sometimes. Let me give you examples.
One of my favourite films is Interstellar. For those that haven't seen it, its set in space and doesn't appear to rely heavily on CGI. A lot of the shots in the film look like they could of been stock NASA footage. Because everything is so realistic, you get completely absorbed in the film as it's so believable.
Starfield shares a lot of the same traits as the film Interstellar, being grounded in reality with some neat graphical flourishes:
- When you dock with another ship or space station, the camera view of the little cutscene that plays makes the process feel almost 'real' - When you destroy a ship, there isn't a massive fiery explosion. Instead the ship realistically breaks up and there is a lot of 'dust like' particles and other larger parts just floating in space. Again this feels and looks very realistic. - Taking off and landing is really great. The sounds of the roaring engines, the smoke. Its awesome.
There are more things like this, but these are the first that I could think of off the top of my head. A lot has been said about the immersion breaking loading screens, but its the little things like this which all add to the immersion and matter for me.

Yeah, the sound and music is great.
Best take-off and landing sound evar. It sounds so good I always look up and watch whenever a ship is doing it.

Was going to play some Street Fighter but the first thing that popped up when I turned on the Xbox was a bug Starfield splash page. I’m going to space, boys! oh and as for the HDR discussion from a million pages ago, it does run in HDR, as my TV switched to it, and pressing the Xbox Guide button doesn’t say Auto HDR like is the case when it’s faked. But it’s true that there’s no in-game sliders. As long as it uses the system HDR settings and looks good doing it, I’m content. and last bit before I continue, you can tell it’s the old Creation Engine that runs their older games, but it looks well above Fallout 4, and probably the absolute furthest they can stretch this engine. Looks good. Pretty sure I saw DF say it doesn't really work and makes everything washed out. Given its total absence on PC I'm very suspicious as to whether it's been done properly, or whether a rough conversion has been hacked in to the Xbox version to hit a certification point that MS required. I'd definitely suggest trying it off as well as on just to check you actually prefer it on.

Last night I hiked back to my ship with a persistent health draining cough from the lung damage I'd somehow received from harvesting Helium-3, through the spacesuit, for over 1500m metres, stopping regularly to regain breath.
Finally made it back, chucked all the stuff that was over encumbering me over the floor because my cargo hold was full, and two of the crew walking around caused the floor loot to be kicked around like footballs.

So far I've found the FPS elements better than I expected, and found the RPG do to disappointing.

The combat AI seems to be about three seconds behind what’s happening though. You’d think they’d have sergeant majored that shit out in the academy, it gets you killed.
