I think they just stay on your ship. Whilst I’ve only got 4 official crew slots on my ship at the moment, it’s a right old party in there, as there are about 9 people hanging around in total.

Bollocks. They’re tough on crime in Alpha Centauri. I accidentally(!) stole a roll of zero wire from right under the nose of somebody - a mere 26 credits - and I’m being shipped off to a prison colony.

Best gun ever.
Explosive Suppressed Calibrated Grendel
As well as increasing damage at low health it randomly deals incendiary damage and randomly switches to explosive rounds. It's quite devastating.

Encountered my first proper bug that breaks a quest about 26hrs in. A classic 'the thing I need is below the floor' bug. Apparently, I could clip through the floor with the console but it sounds like a common bug that will surely be patched quickly. Pretty good going to have made it this far without issue on the release version of a Bethesda title.

What are people's thoughts on encumbrance in Starfield and in general?
I disagree with Steph on this one. I think a carry limit keeps you grounded - having to decide what loot is most valuable and what to leave behind is an enjoyable part of the whole looting process for me. Similarly in deciding what weapons and equipment to take with you, etc. It totally makes sense (in Fallout) that you can't just pick up and carry everything you find and, ultimately, most of it gets stored and never used or sold for caps that you end up not needing after a certain point in the game anyway. It gives items value beyond how much money they're worth, ie, are they worth the space in your inventory to carry with you (like the Blacktail in RE4 - its small size is one of the things that makes it my prefered handgun)
With regards to the point they make about boarding a ship, killing the crew and wanting to loot everything - you search through what's there and take what's most valuable (to sell) or useful (to use yourself), just like a real burglar
That's not to say I think they're wrong for not liking it - just that it's not objectively bad. A 'bottomless pockets' perk should be included for people who want it, or maybe just an option to enable it or not from the start (like the Hardcore mode in NV)
How stingy a carry limit is is a different matter

As another example, say you have two items, Thing1 and Thing2, both weigh 50g but Thing1 is worth 10 caps while Thing2 is worth 50. This makes finding an Item2 when looting something more desirable and satisfying. Otherwise you're just grabbing stuff and selling it without a thought
Which is fine, but it does add an appreciable element to the experience in my opinion

Not only do I want a weight limit, but I also want an inventory that assigns different size to different things like in Diablo 2. I fucking hate it if everything is just a same size icon, my brain can't properly parse that crap.

Yeah, in the original Deus Ex I had a specific set of guns and items I'd end up carrying with me through the game. In some ways it's kind of like having a build (especially when you combine that with what skills you take)
The GEP is huge but it's too useful not to have

Was looking. The Constellation crew go back to the lodge but the rest seem to go elsewhere so you have to find them and recruit them again. Bit silly they don't all go to The Lodge.

Who needs a toaster when you have the population of New Atlantis… talkie to the max
Can’t say I’m a fan of Vasco though… duller than dishwater and likely to consistently get in your way while sending you to sleep

Not sure it was wise to expose players more or less immediately to such a huge city in New Atlantis with so much to do quite so early into the game without better breadcrumb style segmentation of the city. It’s taken me over 6hrs to feel like im just about orientated enough to not get lost and have spoken to probably most of the available quest giving characters. I’m not sure everyone is that patient… would be surprised if I’m taking off again within the next 6hrs to get the local quests done!
In space no one can hear you… help da peeps with da problemz

That sounds like the kind of thing where if the opposite (i.e the city slowly lets you go places) was done you'd hear a lot more complaints tbh. "Why are we being railroaded", "But muh immersion", "Would've been better if we didn't have all these roadblocks in New Atlantis" etc.
Seen it way too many times with exploration restrictions (even had that reaction myself once or twice, although not even close to the point of raging about it, just an "Oh man, really? Well..."), even if they were justified in-game...

I’m also finding elements of the graphics inconsistent. Initially wowed by the general fidelity. Best ever doors in a game! Most indoor areas look great!
But then exploring New Atlantis at edge of city overlooking water horrible outlook. Some of the npc character models also very poor (quest givers). Can forgive Citizens being a mixed bag but you would think plot involved character models would have better quality control.

Right now, I'm enjoying this as much as Skyrim and Fallout 3. Whilst I'm sure I'd enjoy it even more if they could do the Bethesda thing without the jank for once, I'm still getting exactly what I wanted from this. It's got the exact same pull. The quest variety has been excellent. Sure there are occasional fetch this or take that there, but the narrative elevates them and invariably there's more than meets the eye.
Nearing 30hrs in and have done maybe the first 6 or so Main quests and a whole bunch of other stuff. The key thing for me has been that in time I've had very little repetition. I keep finding interesting quests to do, little threads turn out to be satisfying multistage quests and the environment variety has been far better than I expected. It's properly beautiful at times too.
I keep looking at that skill tree and thinking just about all the skills would be useful and I want to complete it. I'm level 15 and it feels like I've barely unlocked any of them.
No it's not perfect, yes it's limited by it's engine and some of the dialogue is a bit route one, but if you like Bethesda games it's a very very good Bethesda game.

Oh and pro tip: "Activities" are not the procedurally generated busy work you might assume there are (I think that's the terminal missions, though I haven't even finished one of those yet).
Activities are definitely worth doing. Many have escalated significantly and taken me to some interesting places I wouldn't have been otherwise.

Though I think it works best for key items like Weapons, Jet Packs or whatever. It can be a pain for all the tiny junk you pick up. Tiny junk should stack almost infinitely so you don't have to think about it. Then have recycle stations like System Shock Remake which you can visit and just press a 'convert all the junk in my backpack into credits / health packs / ammo' button.

How are folks spreading their skill points? I don’t know how thinly to spread them, so need to get on with completing the little challenges that allow one to rank up.

I’ve got Stealth up to lv3 and Security up to Expert locks, which feels acceptable for the moment. Next I’ll be investing in Science- I’m not that bothered about any of the skills on the first tier, but I need to get to Weapon Engineering in the second tier so I can do more gun modding. Longer term, I want the tier 4 skills for chameleon sneaking and better headshots.
A mate who’s further on than me said it’s really worth getting the Pilot skill up to lv4, so you can pilot class B and C ships. You know, just in case you happen to find one whose previous occupants are dead for some reason.

Started as an Industrialist: 1 Research Methods 1 Persuasion 1 Security
Added 1 Stealth (as you need at least one to even be able to sneak). 3 weight lifting, which has pretty much alleviated my any encumbrance issues (haven't felt a need for the 4th yet) 1 more Persuasion to 2 1 Commerce (seems like it'd pay off long run) 1 Surveying (only just did this, but that extra 10m makes a huge difference, will likely get the XP back from being less lazy and scanning more, and might add another tier on that principle) 1 Boost Pack (essential) 2 Piloting (long term goal is C class ships so have to max this) 1 more Security to L2 1 Targeting Control Systems
I think they've done a great job with the skill tree. There's nothing wacky thus far like Fallout Perks, but just about everything is desirable. Actually the only branch that holds minimal interest to me is Combat. No points in that at all so far, and still don't feel any need to prioritise it.

I’ve basically wound up with my standard stealth archer character but in spaaaaace.
Full stealth Full lock picking Full pistols Lvl 3 persuasion One point to let me use jump packs A few others dotted around
Now focusing on getting my space combat up to speed as I think I’ll need it the way my career is currently going.
