Tried launching it on my PC just to make sure it's all ready to go when the pauper version launches, but it's giving a slightly unexpected message (the storage device might be missing or disconnected) Microsoft really are a bit shit with the PC side of things. You'd think it'd give the standard "you can't do that yet" message.
Xbox services in general seem to be pretty fucked right now. Cloud saves not working for my daily game of AOE2 for points, app not loading rewards...

This seems like a pretty grounded video review: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uuI-6fwwtYThe best Bethesda game ever, but still just a Bethesda game. Apparently the "polish" some people claim it has is still spotty, with some game breaking bugs that can appear (quest relevant people floating away through the ground or ceiling). Also it seems to have a lot of cloned points of interest, so you will see the exact same locations, even with exact same enemy placement (and loot as well?) multiple over and over again the longer you play.

They should never have come out with comments on the bugs or stability. It'll be the YouTube shaped whip that everybody beats them with

Did they claim it's be the most big free Bethesda game ever? Cos that's traditional.

Don't think anyone has encountered any serious bigs yet I’ve seen reviewers mention necessary reloads due to bugs (not the end of the world, but irritating), and an instance of a quest line being unable to complete. Loads of instance of the usual Bethesda jank still. A game of this scope is going to be buggy, it’s unavoidable. May well still be true that it’s their cleanest regardless of how the internet focuses on them.

DF say it isn't broken. It looks very nice, but the idea it's just a Bethesda RPG in space puts me off a bit. This is kind of where I am. It has been interesting and very entertaining reading the reviews (and meltdowns) on the internet, but if even the most positive ones are saying it’s largely just a typical Bethesda RPG but in space, and the good bits come outside of the main campaign… well, that just makes me remember that I bounced hard off Skyrim and Fallout 4 (both abandoned incomplete), so it’s probably not going to be for me. I’m probably going to give Baldur’s Gate 3 a go on PS5 instead…

Two hours or so in and so far I've loved everything I've played and not loved everything I've watched. Some of the things that you watch I wish were playable or just watchable in first person. NMS was rubbish but the seamlessness was so cool.

I watched some on twitch last night when I got in and saw some amusing Bethesda quality bugs but nothing game breaking. NPCs floating through scenery and ending up on top of desks, the robot companion spazzing out and having ragdoll shakes stuck in objects. Jumped over a railing and when landing on floor your character died and ragdolled high into air just like the giant attack on Skyrim.
All amusing stuff for sure and no doubt YouTube videos will be full of things like that. Claiming it is bug free is cherry picking what you clarify a bug to be. The above in other games would surely cause the game to be classed as "buggy as fuck" so not sure why this gets a pass just because it's Bethesda. Sure it's not game breaking but it's 2023 and we shouldn't be saying stuff like the above is fine on AAA games

Reviews have mentioned skinless heads with bulging eyeballs, there are bugs, unless that was some sort of tribute to Ubisoft.

I'd be a tiny bit sad if there weren't any of those classic ones. Nonsense ragdoll deaths are part of the Bethesda DNA.

kilters Are sure it's actually redownloading? See my comment from earlier. It was some sort of weird local thing in my case and 117GB took about 5-10mins. Annoying but not such a big deal. The message on screen is quite misleading. It is treated by Xbox app as a download except it can't be as it happened at about 50x faster than would be possible for a true download. Also double check the app hasn't queued this task below another game that needs to download a genuine update (which also happened to me). Stupid app design. Thanks. You are right, it took only 10 mins to re scan the files. However I was unable to launch it and it kept crashing. Rebooted and updated drivers etc. but still had the issue. What eventually worked was going into the options of the game in the Xbox app and clicking on Verify and repair. Was able to launch successfully then.
1 hour in and its pretty good. Looks nice but slightly annoyed by a horrible looking loading screen with tips before I went to land on a planet. Facial animations are fine so far. Certainly nowhere near ME Andromeda!

I'm playing this regardless so right now I'm only concerned about performance. muddyfunster seems to be fairing well so I'm happy. However the amount of people commenting on YouTube videos about performance and not being good and then putting their specs in to find that they're running gtx1060 or some such shit. FFS man you surely have seen the requirements and yet you're expecting 2k ultra wide 60fps and then blaming poor optimisation. Wtaf?

Had been initially encouraged by the sounds of the performance, especially given my aging PC. I'm still on a 8700k with a 1080ti. Been a great servant, so was hoping I might be able to squeeze out a mixture of low/medium setting at 1440p, but I'm unfortunately super sensitive to frame drops and frame pacing issues when I play -- can literally stop me playing a game entirely if it's too egregious. Will see what the DF PC analysis has to say when it's out. Oddly, ACG mentioned in his review that 1080ti(s) were actually punching above their weight here ... fingers crossed.

Had a quick hour with it this morning, just enough time to know I'm going to love it. It's going to take a bit of time to get to grips with the new systems though.
The question is, do I wait until the Mrs has gone to bed so I can play it in peace or sit there with her saying "I don't mind you playing silly games, but at least talk to me." and forcing me into a conversation. I don't know why she thinks that playing a game somehow requires less concentration than watching tv or reading, neither of which she would interrupt, but it really ruins the experience.

For those that have played both, Is this fundamentally different to The Outer Worlds?
I played OW and enjoyed it at the start but fizzled out quite quickly.

I used the photo mode to take a screenshot, and it used that shot as the loading screen background from that point on. Presuming it will rotate through any other shots stored in the Gallery part of the main menu, haven't tested it yet.

Well I think the biggest difference without having played it is you can fly a spaceship and land on different planets and you can't in the other one.

I'm "too early" for the Xbox version apparently. Meanwhile my brother, who's sponging the PC version from my subscription, is already in. Although he's just messaged me that it's crashed 3 times in the space of 10 minutes. The joys of modern game launches. Won't you just be sharing the same save with him? Can't see subscription sharing working well with the PC version as it'll just use the same account. Haha, no, we're not that insane. Microsoft are actually fairly generous with licence/game sharing on Windows, up to 10 devices (including Xbox consoles) last time I checked. Login to the Xbox app on my brother's PC with my account, download Starfield. Logout as me, log back into Xbox app as him. Play game, it really is that simple. There's limits to it obviously. We game share on our consoles as well, so I initially thought we might be able to run 3 copies of a game simultaneously, 2 on console and 1 on PC, all with different accounts. However as soon as you launch the third copy it throws a fit and says fuck off, which is fair enough. But anyway, yes, Game Pass sharing on PC is totally a thing.

I'm playing on a 3080 with 5600x and 32GB at 1440p.
Thus far performance has been extremely smooth. Honestly I'm not sure how much work dynamic resolution scaling, FSR2 and VRR are doing in the background, but it feels very nice with the mouse.
I'm really enjoying it so far. It's exactly what I wanted. A new Bethesda RPG. I've only done one outpost and I think it's an unskippable story one so might not be representative. It had what I'm after, bit of environmental story telling, audio logs, emails that let you piece together what happened. Was interesting to explore. Key test will be variety of course.
I also quite like the lock picking puzzle game.
If you've recently played a ton of Fallout I could understand being a bit underwhelmed as much is familiar. For me it's been 8 years, and I like this stuff so it's good familiar.
Admittedly I was enjoying FO4 this early on too, but if I only get 20+ hours of fun it's money well spent.
Think I'm off to a City soon so I guess that's a bit of an acid test of performance.
