So far it sounds mostly like it's Skyrim in Space. But I think there is at least one aspect in which it's even worse, and that is the lack of a continuous and seamless exploration experience. The landing zones make it feel "instanced" instead, where you hop from fast travel to fast travel, activate your scanner, go to the quest icon, do your thing, and get back. Of course, that's not really their fault, it's just a reality of a space game. Space is big and nobody has time to seamlessly fly everywhere and explore on your own when the chances are almost zero to find anything. But at least in No Man's Sky you can do this if you want. Just fly over the surface of a planet and try to find a portal, trading post, rare resource depot or whatever. Not that there is a point in doing so, because you can just scan and then get an icon and use your pulse drive to get there quickly. But it's possible. As I said this morning, doing that in NMS was also quite boring and made the planets seems unrealistically small, despite technically being more realistic.

Common concensus seems to be that it is not as "charming" as Skyrim was and in a lot of ways is quite "dry". But theres a heck of a lot of game there and some of it is darn good. It sounds stable and janks aside plays well. Poor AI, undevelped mapping systems and irritating inventory complications seem the biggest bugbears. 8/10 sounds like its where its at! (one to Gamepass and not buy outright for now then by the sound of it?) 8/10 is still a very good score. But I guess if it's not a 9 or 10 it's dogshit in some people's eyes. /Remembers Uncharted 3 EG debacle

The lack of complete freeroam doesn't bother me. They've got two other series for that
From what I saw in that DF video, it looks every bit a Bethesda RPG. I'm not excited for it but I think I will enjoy it

And yeah, it's boring. There is also no point to it, like I said. But it's possible, and sometimes I do it, just because I can.
But yeah, NMS should have done more with that capability.

I'm pleased this is looking like a very good if not yet great game and like Cyberpunk has the potential to become a great game mid to long term!
Whoot for Series S version being seemingly decent too!
Given the potential black hole (no pun intended) event this could have been had it tanked I think Bethesda & MS can be happy with themselves and it will still draw a lot of players over to see what the fuss is about...

Hmm the PC Gamer review (75) has dampened my enthusiasm a tad. Their reviewer argues that it's not as engrossing as Bethesda's other RPGs and bemoans the loss of being sidetracked on the way to an objective (outside of Cities at least) which is certainly one of my favourite things usually. I kind of hoped they'd achieve that gameplay loop another way.
Although he really liked Fallout 4...

I had massive concerns about how well it'd run on my ageing PC, but seeing it running well on Series S alleviates them a little. Still expecting a 7/10 game and I'll be surprised if it holds up even to FO4.

I wonder if they knew they’d need to jam less space stuffs in in a bid to actually tune it up and make it run better this time.

I'm not excited for it but I think I will enjoy it I think this is where I’m at. The Digital Foundry performance analysis has kind of dampened my enthusiasm for it - I’ve found by dipping into this thread and seeing people being excited about it that I’ve been quite looking forward to it too - but I do want to play it still. I just don’t think I’ll be doing much off the golden path exploring.

Generally reviewing very well.
I tend to trust ACG quite a bit as he puts a lot of focus on fun factor. He had a blast with the game and his review has gotten me quite hyped to play this.
Metacritic of 87 is very good. I expect most of us will look fondly on it as we tend to be more forgiving about shortcomings than the critics are.

I love space and there aren’t enough space RPGs. I’ll be there regardless. Helps that I like Bethesda’s game design too.

Usual places having a meltdown about the reviews.
We live in an barmy age where a game with this weight of expectation upon it is considered to have disappointed with anything less than something silly like a 95 metacritic.
It's still reviewing very, very well all things considered.
Bonkers really.

Just watched the DF video, and I thought it looked really shit. Like graphically poor. Like cross-gen bad. All of that plus "just" another Bethesda RPG in the Skyrim vein. Meh. I have it pre-loaded, so of course I'll play it, but I recently re-engaged with CyberPunk and I don't see anything in Starfield that's going to pull me away from that based on the video.

With the news that Xbox Series is (very slightly) underperforming in sales compared to Xbox One at this point in the cycle, it'll be really interesting to see if this gives hardware sales a decent bump over the next couple of months.
As for Metacritic, I don't think the score is too far off what I'd expected. It's a Bethesda RPG in space and was never going to be much more than that. Still looking forward to booting it up tomorrow.

So it looks from reviews this is exactly as good as I was expecting; which is to say, probably a 4-star game that I'll absolutely fall head over heels for, think of as the game of the generation, and play nothing else for months.

Video game 'fans' are utterly insane. Just enjoy the fucking game!
Or don't. So just play something else.
Never understood why everything has to be such a massive drama.

I suspect it’s a 4 out of 5 that all the usual Bethesda annoyances will eventually annoy me the fuck away from. But, fair play- Microsoft needed a solid game and it defo looks like they’ve got one.

I'm not looking to hate on the game, but I can't reconcile the prerelease vids with the shit DF looked at. But then... I just watched the ACG video mentioned above though, and that has picked a far wider variety of biomes to showcase and it looks a lot better. Maybe DF just picked the shit bits. *shrug*

Oh it definitely does look rough in some spots but it looks excellent in others. It's almost like looking at 2 different games across the course or acgs review.
So you are both right and also both wrong.
Balance is restored across the universe.
And cyberpunk on pc is actually a pretty damn good game nowadays.

I just hate all the shooty bits. Been watching some streamers and those parts don't do it for me. At least with Cyberpunk I could go the netrunner or stealth route which I loved.

But with two years of patches it looks decent and plays really well and is more compelling thematically to me. It doesn't matter *what* it was though - the point I'm trying to make is that the DF video put me off. The ACG video makes it sound a lot better. Average out to meh.
