I don’t think they’ll ever top the marketing power of that Dragonborn Chant from Skyrim. I spent the year or so after the debuted it (before the game’s actual release) losing my mind wanting to play that game. I think the Fallout soundtrack was similarly effective.
I haven’t heard any music from Starfield yet. I think in the trailer I saw ages back it just had ambient Space blorps that I don’t consider music.

It's getting close now, the amount of shit I'm seeing just scrolling down my news feeds or YouTube is getting too much.
I might have to just go offline for a week or else something is going to get spoiled

It builds into this very memorable, soaring theme that captures the majesty of space perfectly, with definite nods to classic sci-fi themes. (there may be better quality versions out there, but I don't want to dig around Starfield videos on YouTube at this point, due to spoilers)

I've just realised that I can play this because of Game Pass. I don't know if I really want to though.

From the little bits I've heard so far the music seems very good (again). This is something Bethesda invariably gets right.
I only need to hear the menu theme from Oblivion and Skyrim and I'm right back in that world immediately. Few games have such a strong identity/association in my mind.
I didn't love that Imagine Dragons song though. Perhaps it'll grow on me. Hopefully used sparingly.
Odds on picking up a very faint distant radio transmission with a certain 'Three Dog' hosting and "I don't want to set the world on fire" playing?

I don't think anybody will ever top the 65daysofstatic score for No man's sky for just tooling around doing space stuff. It was such an absolutely perfect pairing.

A Portuguese review summary, in short- looks good, world is well realised, quests good, ship combat average, faces poor, AI dumb as rocks: He praised the graphics and the ships, saying they were incredible. He also praised the performance, he played it on the xbox series x and according to him, the performance was way above average compared to other recently released games. Although the game is running at 30 fps, he pointed out that the game camouflages this very well and even at 30 fps, it is an extremely fluid experience with a few drops that are not occasional. The npcs are interesting, in the Bethesda standard, but the facial expressions are really disappointing and although they have improved compared to previous titles, they are not revolutionary and are somewhere between average and below average. Another very relevant thing was the AI, he played in normal mode and according to him, the AI is very dumb. he pointed out that there were many other difficulties above normal but he didn't test to see if the AI improved on higher difficulties. He judged the game to be easy. On gameplay and animations: simply very enjoyable, everything has weight, the animation of the doors opening is very fluid and he described it as one of the strongest parts of the game. Combat is walking forward and shooting, mainly because of the AI, but he said it's still very enjoyable and that despite being relatively linear, it's still very enjoyable combat. Now, the quests. in his words, they have a similar basic structure, but even so, they are very captivating and hold the player. he claims to have spent many late nights trying to finish specific quests because they hold him so much and excite him so much. He didn't say much about the main campaign so as not to give away spoilers, but according to him, it's extremely good and certainly Bethesda's best campaign. One of his criticisms of exploration was the lack of a mini-map and a guidebook. It's extremely difficult to find your way around and the player often finds himself lost in a gigantic city and has no idea what to do. According to him, the game will get much better when the guidebooks start coming out, since the game itself doesn't present most of its mechanics to the player, leaving him lost and forcing him to figure it out on the fly. Another criticism was the inventory management, which he says is very limiting, his ship only carries 400 kilos and he said that the inventory is always full and he is always too heavy to run, making it very difficult to focus on looting something because his character carries so little weight and so does the ship. A problem that could easily be fixed with mods and future balancing. I'm too lazy to write more, so I'll summarize the other points; the ship combat isn't a high point of the game, something that improves a lot when you get a better ship, but it still wasn't something to get too excited about. Its overall score was 8.5 points, a very good game, with incredible graphics and atmosphere, huge cities with lots to explore, captivating missions, interesting characters and enjoyable gameplay.

Going to resist clicking that. Think this will be the first time I’m going to attempt to dodge reviews and go into a game blind.
I’m lubed up and ready. Probably a bit early.

I won't expand on anything for the sake of those that want to go in totally fresh, but that review summary is hugely encouraging in terms of delivering what I want out of a Bethesda game. Can't say I'm too concerned about the (constructive) criticisms raised at this stage.

It seems that I already have the day-one patch downloaded and installed (1.7.23). I don't think it can have been that big as it must have happened in the two hours my PC was on yesterday.

I’ve watched a fair few clips now and some of my personal Bethesdajank bugbears are in there- odd loading screens moving in and out of rooms that feel very retro these days, NPC’s awkwardly shuffling around environmental furniture like stiff marionettes, all stuff we’ve seen from the limited engine before. I think they’ve hugely oversold the exploration of planets too- it very much looks like you pick a point to land on and some sort of area is generated, with quests, maybe without, but there is no seamless world there- if you landed in the “square” next to it the one area wouldn’t blend in to or relate to the other. It looks fab though- the environments are really great. The question, for me anyway, is what sort of quality in terms of writing and questing they’ve filled it with.

Some of contents of that review is odd. It disguises that it’s 30fps well? How exactly can you possibly do that?
Also, doors open well is a strange detail to even make it into a review.

Was about to go for a new PC (my i5-6600 / 1070 is scraping min specs and I've offered my Series X to son#1 for Uni). Car now in for major service and timing belt change which has taken a chunk out of the fund...
Feels like I'm going to have to avoid the net for a few weeks to avoid spoilers and jump in later than expected.
Might be a game for dark autumn/winter nights...

I'm with you on the fact that it succeeds or fails on the strength of the writing and questing. If there are no hooks to make you want to explore, a massive universe and numerous gameplay mechanics are pointless.
No Mans Sky is a good example of this. I played that briefly near launch and found it fine, but I felt no real purpose (IIRC the basic objective was to get to the centre of the universe because reasons) and quickly abandoned it. Then over a year later once they patched in a decent story/campaign I went back and really enjoyed it. All the other gameplay systems added immersion and depth but are just busy work if there's no story to pull you forward. By the same token, once I completed the campaign in NMS and had no real hand-curated missions left, I was done. I felt no need to explore more planets or build more stuff.
I genuinely don't see why people want to be able to explore every inch of planets. You could do this in NMS and it added nothing. Oddly the fact that you can go round the entire planet at ground level in minutes/hours just makes them seem oddly small. An illusion that is possible makes sense for immersion, but the reality of being able to do that is actually quite dull and a waste of dev time.

Yeah, NMS sounded like my perfect game, and I got bored of it very quickly. (when I wasn't dying from acid rain) From the little bits I've heard so far the music seems very good (again). This is something Bethesda invariably gets right. I only need to hear the menu theme from Oblivion and Skyrim and I'm right back in that world immediately. Few games have such a strong identity/association in my mind. I always loved the music from the Daggerfall trailer, though that wasn't bespoke, it was Antonin Dvorak's Suite in A Major, "American Suite", Op. 98b the final Allegro movement.

Don’t think this counts as a spoiler (from the review above):
the animation of the doors opening is very fluid and he described it as one of the strongest parts of the game.

I'm with you on NMS and similar with Elite - initially a lot to do but soon enough I felt like I lost any sense of direction or was faced with tasks that felt overly repetitive.
I get that both were somewhat 'procedural' and so a deep, multi-threaded narrative wasn't to be expected, but both games petered out for me more quickly than I'd hoped. I'd backed E:D from the initial kickstarter and maybe my rose-tinted specs had got the better of me.
I'm hoping Starfield just gives me that feeling that FO3/NV did back on the day. Being able to stumble across some really interesting leads and find myself in hours of side missions, hopefully avoiding too much repetition/filler.

I read a better translation of that Brazilian guy who accidentally posted his review too early.
"don't compare this to No Man's Sky, don't view this as a space exploration game" & "It's a Bethesda RPG, Bethesda didn't reinvent themselves (it isn't like Nintendo did with BOTW, so to speak), so expect a Bethesda RPG through and through"
So I think we're good.
