I had that. My dad threw away the instructions (which he did for most of my other Lego too) so after the inevitable destruction I could never rebuild it. Had the big icey one from a few years later too.

It does look weirdly familiar. I didn't think I had a space ship that big, but maybe. Or maybe I just dreamed of it. Or maybe a mate had it. Or maybe I had one of the smaller versions. I remember the laser barred iso-cubes. The front cockpit detached right? Why is this cooler than any of the current Lego space ships?? Modern ones tend to look like something that could actually fly. They lose that 80s sensibility somehow. It’s like how modern cars, being more aerodynamically efficient, lose a lot of their character. That said, there’s some awesome modern Lego and I’m sorely pressed to keep my vow not to buy it.

After transformers, I was all over Starcom space toys when I was younger. Kinda skipped Lego (even though I had a giant bucket full of it). Starcom was the shit, all the vehicles had something on there that was motorised and had little men with magnets in their boots.

The entire cockpit section pivots revealing a small car that can transport the cells. The entire cell module in the back is detachable and there’s 2 small flying craft on the wings under those red transparent domes. It was awesome.

The Lego space ships now seem either based on real stuff like the shuttle, or based on movie franchises like Star Wars, Guardians, etc.. Which is great, but they don't seem to design their own cool ones anymore. And as such they don't have as many transformation points as the space police one.
I don't remember StarCom at all.

I loved the pirate Lego from 90s... I actually rebuilt one of the ship sets whil up at my parents this summer. My 5 year old luvvdd it. Actually had almost all the parts - maybe 6 or 7 missing pieces. Unfortunately not all of the sails - but I think I can make new ones of those with some fabric.

I loved the way a lot of the smaller vehicles basically folded up into a standard sized "box" which could then be transported in / on the larger vehicles. Then you press a button and it unfolds automatically! I even loved all the individual figures, each with their own bio. I had the moon base thingy (with working airlock!) and quite a few of the vehicles, but never had the Starmax Bomber, although my friend did. Starcom, MASK, Manta Force, Transformers, Lego... I loved my childhood toys. It's just occurred to me how many of them involved "transforming" in one way or another.

Totally off topic but I am now remembering having loads of turtles figures and something called Dino Riders.

I have got this still set up in the boy's bedroom, I put it on my list for Father Xmas in 2014, and he managed to get it down the chimney! I agree, the Space and Space Police Lego sets of the 70's and 80's were fantastic. We managed to get some 2nd hand from a family over the road when I was still in primary school, it was played with endlessly.

I was actually walking through a shopping mall a few days ago that was 50% retro toy stores. Saw original G1 transformers toys (Skorponok was huge!), original Kenner B-Wings, etc.. mostly horribly pricey.
Side note, why are the current Transformers toys far more rubbish than the original ones?
Ones that I didn't see, but remember from my childhood were the BSG Vipers and Cylon Raiders, with their highly dangerous launchable missiles.

I remember a tank/APC type thing that would close down and could be loaded onto the bomber allowing you to land and rollout for a mission. Also had a skip lorry type vehicle that would lift and load containers onto itself with its arms ... Feckin loved it

I started this Lego thread-derail so I’ll (hopefully) finish it… this thing was the best set I had by far. You could detach the buggies and top pieces and make a super-buggy, or two flying scout ships. 80s/90s Lego was much better for actually playing with after you’d built it.

My missus got a load of her Lego back when her parents moved about 12 years ago. She built the pirate ship for the lols, which kick-started a VERY expensive hobby. We must've spent thousands on it since then...

Stupid amount of arguing going on on EG’s comments section re: gamepass 1 month free cancel prior to Starfield. Snooze you loose! (me included)!
Can’t be irritated about it though… it’s a Subs fee! It’s not like they have made it the first £100 RRP game or something!

Found some of my childhood Lego in my Dad's garage. Jealous of these space ships, mid 70s me had the North Sea Oil set...

Plus some of the sets now are so complex with so many custom pieces that if you play with them and break them then it's a real pain to rebuild them.

I saw it on eBay about 4 years ago, complete, boxed, but with no instructions for £150. Kicking myself for not buying it now, but I was unemployed at the time.

What you saw may have been the recent Earthrise Scorponok, (which I have) which is about double the size of the original 80s one (which I had). There’s a picture of both together if you scroll down at the link. The new one is amazing. There’s a lot of different “ranges” of transformers they sell now. Lots you’ll see at the shops might be ultra-basic ones for kids, they’ve also got lines specifically to appeal to sad grown-up guys with fond memories of the (actually, ultra-basic) 80s ones. Some of the ones you can but these days are indeed shit, but a lot are amazingly cool works of engineering. www.cybertron.ca/boards/showthread.php?t=80341

Even the original was like twice the height of Optimus Prime.
I know what you mean about the different ranges, and I'm sure there are some great ones out now, but I was looking at the new Rise of the Beasts ones in the toy shop and they mostly looked like cheap plastic junk.
These were the ones aimed at kids, not the collector edition ones.
There's probably a lot of rose tinted glasses going on, but I remember the original transformer toys being large and pretty solid and having metal parts.
with the cheap-ass looking wheels
