I'm not sure if this game will work well. The more realistic the graphics become, the more jarring the Bethesda jank factor will be. Also, the features that go beyond their usual game, like the procedural planets and resource harvesting etc. looks pretty uninspired. Still, the ship builder alone will probably make me play this game. There is a very weird mix of that of in Fallout 76, which this closely resembles. Some items and textures are virtually unchanged from FO3, but others are near photo realistic. Makes for an odd look. Then, as ever, they Bethesda something, like recently changing a metal texture so my favourite chrome power armour now looks like it's made of cheap pressed tin.

Why have that handle on a gun if you're just going to grab the frame.. I think Bing ai could, and has, come up with a better designed sci Fi weapon It's not even grabbing the frame, the hand is supposed to be on the foregrip but it's clipping through the frame instead. I saw this posted on a games site yesterday lambasting classic Bethesda bugs in a promo shot. I have to admit I didn't see it at all until I read further in the article. That's crazy. And despite the terrible jank, if I had the console to play it, I'd be all over it. They have me in their power

To be fair, the DF team do a good job of explaining the frame rate. Again, not an issue for me, but given what this game is trying to do, 30 is absolutely understandable.
This wasn’t on my radar in all honesty, but seeing as it’s on Gamepass it would be silly not to give it a try.

30 when done well can be absolutely fine. (FH5 and TOTK from recent memory) 30 when done badly is fucking awful (Gotham Knights)
I'll still be maining it on PC seeing as that's an option mind you.

DF's breakdown of Starfield is absolutely spot on, especially their explanation of why the game is capped at 30fps. Well worth a watch.

I also give it a negative review because for me, the game is literally unplayable.

It's not even 30fps. More like 0fps for me right now!

It's going to be poor performance all over the shop and buggy as fuck at launch. See: every game Bethesda has made over the past two decades.

I'm betting nobody will give a fuck about bugs once they realise it's the Expanse/Firefly/Cowboy Beebop wish fufilment experience they've always wanted.
I'm only worried it'll mean a new console purchase, and rehashed ideas - oh, it's just that Oblivion/Skyrim quest/faction rejigged etc. Can already see the army types as the new Fighters Guild/Companions, the Serpent guys as D.Brotherhood etc, but again, once we're flying around gasping at vistas, pirating ships it'll all be forgiven.

There was a kind of RTS/They are billions-esque game a little while ago, right? I wouldn't mind a FPS call of duty type game, if they could nail the satire.

Yeah, I think it’s mainly RTSes that I recall. A shooter’d be great.

Nah man, that stuff will get old very fast if the gameplay and story don't hold up. Or, well, very fast is probably not the right expression, since I've also got over 100 hours in Skyrim. But I have no idea what I have done during those 100 hours. A large part was probably forging iron daggers to get my skill up.
I still remember lots of stuff from Fallout: New Vegas, though, because it was actually good.

Surprised there haven't been more big budget Starship Troopers video games. Yeah. There was one shooter we used to play on LAN parties that was actually quite good, but it didn't have enough material to last for a long time.

Helldivers 2 looks like it'll be a fun unofficial starship troopers shooter.

Helldivers 2 looks like it'll be a fun unofficial starship troopers shooter. It still puzzles me why Sony haven't done an official one, they own the rights as I mentioned previously, they wouldn't even need to do anything to secure them.
Helldivers 2 is clearly even more leaning into its Starship Troopersness and it was pretty blatant last time.

I gave up on The Expanse, but at least in Firefly and Cowboy Beebop everything is hanging on the characters and their relationships, and the world building that's done through the stories. Same with nearly every popular sci-fi setting. Without those they'd be pretty boring. I can't think of any examples of that in any Bethesda game, so I wouldn't expect it going into any future ones.
They're good at making playgrounds with lots of systems that sometimes interact in fun and unexpected ways, and that's generally enough, at least until the almighty Gameplay Loop becomes too apparent and starts getting in the way of just having fun. I've had my time and money's worth out of all Bethesda games I've played (except Fallout 4) but I think expectations should be firmly set from what they've done in the past rather than anything Todd says.

I mean, the problem with dialogue in Bethesda RPGs isn't that there's not enough of it. The problem is that the dialogue is stilted and poorly written, so adding more isn't really going to help with that. As far as the "it's not all procedurally generated, we've got lots of handcrafted stuff too!" thing goes... well, I'll believe it when I see it. I can't imagine there is enough bespoke content to make a hundred planets feel unique, let alone a thousand. The best thing about their games is the scope, but with this much scope it feels like you'll need to sacrifice something. Anyway, it's all good. People want to have their space fantasies, so if this game delivers on that I'll be happy for them.

It's kind of a funny to think about the scales involved. Fallout 4 and Skyrim are a few tens of km2 in size and there are a couple of hundred to a thousand or so unique NPCs. The metro area of the medium sized city I live in is over 1000km2 in size and has a little under 1 million inhabitants. The Earth is over 500 million km2.
"More than Skyrim and Fallout 4 combined" is a lot of stuff in terms of games, but on the scale of a planet it's tiny, not to mention 1000 planets. Obviously it's going to be concentrated in a few hub areas, but if you spread all the assets out evenly across the space available it would probably be really hard to find any of it.

Yeah I wish space games wouldn't concentrate on making thousands of planets that will get boring after having visited only like 20 of them. In reality, most planets don't even have a solid surface, and of those who do, most are barren and/or deadly (even in a spacesuit) to just walk about on. Also, those procedurally generated "planets" in games are both tiny and way too large at the same time. Tiny compared to real planets and way too large for the thinly spread gameplay elements present on them.
I would much prefer a space game that only concentrates on hotspots, and doesn't even make the rest of the planetary surface accessible. But then make those hotspots actually interesting and diverse, not like in Rebel Galaxy 2.

Mass Effect Andromeda did that quite well. I'd still have preferred maybe double the areas, like in Dragon Age Inquisition.
