Fair points, can't really argue them. My only explanation is that I play Sonic to go fast - that's the main appeal for me. Collecting emeralds with Knuckles/Rouge or finding animals and shooting things with E-102 just aren't my cup of tea. Don't think they're particularly well designed mechanically either. That's understandable, and I agree re: Sonic. I guess my approach is different in that, while I also associate Sonic and Shadow as the going fast parts, seeing another character makes me go less "Oh, OK, but when do we go fast again" and more "Oh cool, let's see how you play" Still, I get what you're saying. It doesn't help that later forays in different playstyles (06 and *gulp* Boom) didn't work nearly as well...

I think "Sonic going fast" should be where the games focus their attention. The best moments in Sonic are those bits where - and this might be a bit of a cliche to say, sorry - it feels like a rollercoaster. Or maybe a a racing game. Where you can get into a flow state and learn the levels.
That goes for the classic games as much as anything. But it's why I don't hate the 3D stuff, because when done well it's great. The new-Sonic bits in Generations were pretty good. Or the daytime levels in Unleashed.
There is a balance, occasionally the games can become too on rails (this is also something that occasionally blighted the classic games). But Sonic for me has never been about super-precise platforming or complex exploration, or whatever gimmick Sega think up, and it's attempts to diversify usually fail.
That's not too say other views aren't valid, but I've just never been interested in Sonic when it deviates from the series strengths.

I suppose the reason I enjoyed (most of) the different characters in the Adventure games was because while they each brought something different to the table, they also kept enough of the "going fast" bit to feel refreshing and different, but not alienating, at least IMO. E-102, Tails and Eggman had their shooty bits, but it wasn't like a shooting gallery, you still had to keep moving. Knuckles and Rouge were a bit sandbox-y, but they also had obstacles you had to navigate through momentum or getting a good vantage point for hovers, and so on.
It's definitely a delicate balance, and one that I don't think they've managed to strike in subsequent games (although that opinion could be influenced by some nostalgia bias as well, I'll admit)

To be fair I might feel differently about Adventure if I'd played it at the time, it wasn't until much later that I played it and games had moved on by then.

Adventure games, Generations and Colours then? (DF seemed quite positive on the Ultimate port of Colours and the glitches mentioned didn't seem to really affect gameplay) I've been playing Mania and I play pretty slowly, collecting all the rings and exploring the levels, trying to find the most out of the way paths. Few things feel as nostalgic as Sonic 2- Green Hill and Chemical Plant are windows into my childhood. I'm awful at both bonus stage types though. Should have gone with the Sonic 2 ones
Funnily enough, nothing satisfies me more than fucking up the flow in Chemical Plant Zone. So much of that stage just flies by that I do my best to jump/stop and get off the path I'm on to have a look around

(and for the record I only mentioned the glitches in Colours Ultimate as a precaution based on hearsay. I haven't been following it too closely since I'd played the original anyway, so it could be that they've been fixed by now, or just never have been as much of an issue as I thought)

I've played some of Colours and haven't had any issues. I'm just not finding it much fun.

Colours Ultimate is fucking brilliant. Also Forces is nowhere near as bad as the scores suggest. It’s basically Generations with less inspiring levels and a stupid custom character creator.
Adventure is still awesome. Adventure 2 can get in the fucking sea.

So this just dropped and it actually... Looks kinda good??? The environment looks a good bit more fleshed out, there's an actual villain, more "typical Sonic" stages... Why we weren't shown this from the start is anyone's guess, but I'm actually thinking it might work now (although they did seemingly lift the "corrupted right arm" thing straight from the BotW 2 trailer, but it could just be an injury rather than a gameplay thing...)

It is looking more Sonicy, at least.

The corrupt arm in Breath of the Wil feels like a further nod to Princess Mononoke in my eyes. The first game gives me that vibe generally. Maybe thats just my naive western eyes.

Still struggling to muster some enthusiasm for this, I want it to be good but fearing the worst.

I just can't get on with Sonic in three dimensions. Doesn't work for me.

Sonic Adventure was janky but I still enjoyed that.
I mostly agree though.

I'm largely the same but the YTers that I semi-follow that have played this all really liked it. It's wishlisted, but I'll await reviews.

There are bits of it that look alright but I agree, I’m not sure he’s the right character for this sort of game.
Its probably come up already but I do think it would be cool if it had a momentum system like Pathless did. But maybe with collecting rings instead of shooting arrows. I think that might help Sonic make sense in an open world a bit more.

Special stages are from Sonics memories apparently

Would be funny if that was the plot straight up. The villain hijacks Sonic and co.'s memories, builds artificial worlds from those memories and the goal is to figure out what's real and what's made up, fully original stages start about halfway through. Sonic Hearts: Chain of Memories, basically

If that is the case, they should be announcing this already, rather than letting fans rip into it. The marketing for this game has been shocking.

One can only hope the marketing budget went into development, because if their marketing actually had a budget and giving IGN (what looked like) a pre-alpha build was the best they could do...

Ended up getting Origins when it was on sale last week. Finished all 4 games and didn't suffer any tech issues. I suck at the special stages now though

Either have Tails with you and the ginger bastard will run into bombs, or don't have him and fail by a handful of rings that the ginger bastard would have collected.

Nah, he always acts on a delay with you. He's easy to use to grab some extra rings. Never understood the hate for Tails
