My view on this is for playing older/lighter games with a Windows dual-boot and emulators. I fancied a OneXPlayer but the Chinese risk (returns if faulty etc) and cost made me hesitate so this should hopefully achieve that if the chipset is decent enough.
People buying it for AAA will be disappointed though. It will happily surpass my old 32bit only Atom Win gaming tablet (Linx Vision) with only the smaller screen size being a step down. I still think they should have given it a bigger battery though...

Presumably, if the SD gains enough traction, devs will fix up their games to work on it. Plus, Valve, Codeweavers et al will be constantly improving Proton to enable more games to work. There's 0% chance it'll be perfect at launch, but will 100% improve in the months following. Right now Proton enables new games on a practically daily basis. And Divinity 2 runs well with Proton from what I can tell. So it may be "not that simple" in general, but it seems to be just that simple in case of D2. In this case, it may be more the case of lack of power than hardware/software compatibility. My Reddit post was in a Proton compatibility thread.

Yeah I agree. Reckon there's going to be a big hullabaloo when this thing releases, regardless of whether it's broadly a success or not. Naah, it was really hard to get in that first batch, I would imagine it's mostly experienced pc gamers that know how to install windows and won't be held back by what SteamOS can or cannot do. They even restricted it to existing Steam users, and the main advertising line is "Your Steam library, anywhere".

I ordered a 512GB model in the frenzy (should be in the first batch), but in retrospect the news that the m.2 slot is user "accessible" with some disassembly has caused a bit of purchase regret. However with orders now sliding well in to mid 2022 at the earliest I'm going to stick with my whale decision.
As for OS, I'll try SteamOS to start with, but putting Windows 11 on is tempting.

I ordered the 512 model because it's got the etched glass so there'll be minimal reflections. I looked at getting the cheaper model and upgrading the storage but the 2230 NVMe drives aren't widely available and weren't in stock anyway. I can't see the situation getting much better when the SteamDeck launches. I'll keep SteamOS on mine and as an old bloke with shonky eyesight even if every game does technically run on SteamDeck i didn't think my eyes would be up for reading tiny text in GUIs on a tiny screen so i wasn't planning on running GUI intensive games at 720p anyway.
I'll grab a SteamDock as soon as they appear tho. Being able to take the Deck around with me and connect it to a big screen at work, mums or friend's house is quite useful. I doubt i'll be playing it on the Bus anyway. For me it'll be how i use my Switch docked 80% of the time and then portable when i'm sat in another room or at work.

Yeah, fuck that... Think I'll just stick to a decent spec micro SD for expanding storage.
They really don't want you opening it!

The warnings sounds so ott that it sounds like they wanted to stick it to some guy from legal. We told them they could die if they fuck this up, happy now Frank?

I can see them being nervy about the SSD replacement as you could end up affecting the thermals. Replacing a stick assembly looks super simple though, good to see.
Wonder how long it’ll take someone to repaste the APU with liquid metal.

Bit gutted but it gives me (and others) more time to build up a Steam library.. searching for a positive! Hope we get a list of “compatible” or recommended games for it soon

I'm more likely to have a commute to use it on the longer it's delayed so 🤷♂️

I can just feel the interest exploding around me. Yesterday's conference is up, here's the link: youtu.be/P6CUQeHIxDAThe first talk is basically repeating yesterday's documentation (2 posts up), but the rest are fairly new and quite interesting. I have no idea why someone just doesn't take 10 minutes to cut out the waiting screens from these things.

OK, so one awesome thing so far: the Deck will upload any saves that were made when suspended while the game running and after resuming will download any changed saves while the game is running and update the state of the game. That should be quite awesome if done correctly.
They also say games in general basically suspend and resume well, which is not something I expected.

Game suspension is even on the Switch, so I'd be surprised if the Steam Deck didn't have it. But yeah nice to confirm it.
I'm so far down the queue it'll probably be 2023 by the time I get mine.

Switch: closed tightly controlled environment, suspend/resume for games is probably part of the dev kit and certification process.
I’d wager a lot of PC game devs don’t even think to check what’ll happen if they suspend their computer while their game is running.

It certainly isn’t a given on pc. Some games can’t even handle you turning off the screen or controller. Mine’s now scheduled for Q2 too.

P2 is their own game that was fine on controller already. I don’t think they spent any time on this one.

That’s why it’s a bit odd it has taken so long, they could have launched the scheme with their own games.
This seems waaaaaaaay behind schedule for something that was meant to be coming out in December. I don’t believe it was just supply chain issues on the units
