Yeah, you need to get in the queue now or pay scalper’s rates. Some people have already reported as being in Q1 2023 in the queue.

I ordered mine a day or two after reviews came out and it is just saying after Q3 for me. If the calculator is to be believed, my delivery isn't going to be until 31st July 2023.
If you ordered now, it is probably going to be an even longer estimate.
I expect as production ramps up that estimate is likely to come down. If there is a hint of a Steam Deck 2 in 2024 though, I may not bother.

At this point you may as well get in line if you have any interest. It’s four quid which they’ll refund to your wallet if you cancel anyway.

Yep. The only kicker is the three day order window. Lots of people got caught out with not having the money ready and losing their chance, which is understandable. Not everyone can sit on several hundred quid in anticipation of some future unknown date. Hopefully they make the accuracy a little better.

Yeah, I was very careful to keep my CC with the requisite amount of money.
Very nice of Valve to not raise the price here, despite the currency having lost quite a bit of value due to war.

You can also dump the funds into a Steam Wallet, but then you need to keep it topped up if you buy anything else. And no refund possible if you go that way.

Got my email today - at the time I went for the cheap'o 64GB version. I think I'll still pull the trigger though... Whoop new toys!

Got Origin running too now, Titanfall 2 is amazing on this. Interesting DF Weekly today, talk of 40hz mode, and praise for the Steam OS. It's true, not have had any reason to install Windows so far. Someone said they could base a console around this, and I do find that an interesting idea.

Hmm. If origin access (or whatever it's called now) now works, that's a low rent gamepass alternative. That plus emulation might make this much more appealing.

I'm still in two minds about this. Fan noise and the prospect of a steam deck pro/2 around the corner mean I might just sit it out for now.
Although... New and shiny!
If it suddenly popped up for purchase I'd cave in, but Jul-Sep still seems so far away.

If I were Valve (yay, the internet expert strikes again!) I'd wait a good while after the rush has died down before announcing the next one. Even right now, I'd be pretty miffed if they announced something 2x more powerful and with 2x battery life for next year.

Given there's currently a year long waiting list it's hard to imagine there being a new model in the immediate future.

Yeah from a very basic business strategy perspective, releasing a significantly better version in the near future would be absolute idiocy.
However, if this really takes off releasing slightly better versions on a regular basis a la IPhone etc would potentially make a lot of sense. But in that scenario those with a V1 probably won’t be missing out on too much.

I was wondering about the phone comparison and it doesn't work for me. I don't care if a new phone is a little faster or has a little better battery life than the one I have, but I will care a lot about these things with a new Steam Deck. But then I don't upgrade my phone yearly, preferring to stick with it until Apple takes too many features away (4yo iPhone X here, hoping for another 2 years).

You’re also assuming you’re going to get the updated version day 1. New update apparently modified the fan curve, people on Reddit say it’s a bit quieter.

Ah yeah, I'm not saying they're just going to drop a new model tomorrow, but in a year or so we could see it, and queues could be down to reasonable levels by that time as they seem to be figuring out how to ramp up production as they go along.
I have no self control so it's moot anyway, I'll end up ordering the moment I get the email.

I think it really all depends on just how much Valve view the Deck as a mini PC or as a console. I could see them doing regular incremental improvements every couple of years, particularly if they want to be able to always claim that you can play the latest mainstream games on the go.
My previous reference to a Steam Deck 2 in a couple years is unlikely, but I don't think a Steam Deck v.2 with slightly better battery life and a little more GPU grunt is completely unlikely. Complaining about them releasing something like that would be like complaining about Nvidia releasing a new series of GPU every couple of years.
They could decide to keep with the same Deck specs for 5-6 years before releasing a full blown Deck 2, but I imagine the original Deck will be really struggling to keep up with your AAA games by that point. Personally, I wouldn't have much of a problem with that, but they are selling it as a device to play the latest and greatest. Their marketing could change though and if the current Deck continues selling than that is probably the right approach (as ever with Valve, we really have no idea how well it is selling and it could just be the enthusiasts that jumped on it straightaway and barely anyone else).
Of course, there is also the third option, which is the usual Valve approach, of getting distracted by some other bit of hardware and we will never see any other iterations of the Deck.

I doubt Valve is dumb enough to go for the Osborne effect.

If the yearly model upgrades work for phones why wouldn't it work for steam deck. People will just jump onto a particular years model and skip the next couple. Valve were surprised everyone went for the 512gb model, rather than the 64gb. I reckon if they tried it people would go for it.

I can definitely see them doing a refresh on the processor even if they don’t necessarily change much else about the device.
They also seem to be having an impact on the market as a whole already - Aya just announced their new “Aya Neo Air” which is a handheld about the size of a Switch with a 1080p OLED screen. It won’t have the graphical power and battery life of the Deck as apparently it’s going to use a 12W processor with the older Vega graphics, but with the high res screen, smaller size and Zen 3 CPU cores it’s going to work better for some people, and not just those who can’t order a Deck due to where they live.

If the yearly model upgrades work for phones why wouldn't it work for steam deck. I don't think you can compare the two markets. The yearly phone rebuyer is almost always an apple customer, which is a very closed market with limited model selection. The reason for yearly rebuy is basically the same as with fashion, something that should be difficult to attain for what is in essence a handheld gaming pc. I'm not saying a yearly Steam Deck can't be a thing, but it is in my opinion something very different from the yearly iPhone release.

I don’t think they’d be doing one this year and probably not next year either. If nothing else I don’t think there would be enough of a performance benefit for them to do all the engineering work to make a new board/SoC.
I do think it’ll happen later if it keeps selling though; once handheld gaming PCs hit a critical mass then a new version could grow the market even faster as old devices get passed on. And because it’s a PC it becomes more of a virtuous cycle since people aren’t locked out, at least until driver support withers away.
Whether that will happen is all dependent upon what happens after the initial enthusiast sales though. That 64gb machine is going to be the key if it’s to survive as it’s such good value for money.
