Have you tried running MAME as an administrator or similar? Might be a folder permissions thing.

so it is fine with saving cfg files. HLSL settings are not part of that and you need to manipulate .INI files to have specific games fixed to specific HLSL settings. I am still digging into it but if anyone knows this shit let me know!

Yeah, I always thought they were great. The linearity didn’t bother me back then either, as I had already played FFX, which was similarly linear. Agree that Vanille has always been obnoxious though. Still playing it The main thing that remains a problem with it is the lack of world building. It's not a fresh take I know but too much of the story is unclear unless you read the datalog or the text on the save/loading screens. More important though is the lack of a good look at the world and how it works. Cocoon is a great idea and a great setting - a vast artificial world that people live inside. But in game you're not shown how it works at all, it just looks like a normal world. How about a few establishing shots showing the machinations of it and the structure of it? I've been on the wiki for it and apparently the 'stars' in the night sky are in fact the lights of cities on the opposite side of the interior. How cool is that? But no attempt is made to show this at all. It's honestly not even that clear that you're inside it, other than the name, as you can see clear skies all the time. There are plenty of examples of people online assuming that the characters live on the surface. I dunno, seems like a good idea poorly executed

Watch some Gundam. I imagine most Japanese dweebs are already familiar with the concept of space colonies from it

Well yeah that's the thing, space colonies are normally cool as shit but playing the game without looking up the details yourself you can honestly barely tell that's it's not a normal terrestrial world.
Doesn't help that I'm a big fan of Policenauts which as a Kojima game goes into every conceivable detail about its space colony

Not the answer you are looking for, but as I find MAME a pain, I have been using RetroArch for MAME games recently as it's much easier to setup shaders and the like. I spend more time fiddling with my emu setup than playing it, but from what I have tried everything runs fine in RA so I'm sticking with that for the meanwhile. Might be worth a try to see how the performance is on your machine.

I have been making good progress today fiddling with the hierarchical INI file stuff. It’s pretty good and you can as you say dave spend forever fiddling with settings trying to get a really arcade perfect look. I have SF2Turbo looking great. Really massive difference over the default I had on my LCD monitor.

Filters can be amazing. It's not the same as a CRT, but on my 4K QLED I can get a stunning picture, with different filters for different machines. Not got everything perfect yet, but messing with the Mega Bezel Reflection Shader as a start point, I have all the 16bit consoles looking amazing, and a great setup for the Cube/Dreamcast. Mind, the Guest Advanced shader works wonders on it's own, especially on Android. Add in some upscaling and whilst there may be a tiny bit of lag compared to a console/crt setup, I really don't notice, and of course I'm on a 55" screen which wouldn't be possible back then.

Yeah I'm all about CRT simulation. I use a Retrotink scalar with my consoles going into an OLED and some of the scanline, mask and blur effects are super convincing. It's not powerful enough to add curvature though.
I don't know if you could do this with software emulation but one of the things I recently discovered you can do with an interlaced signal is sync up the bob deinterlacer with the scanlines so that it perfectly emulates how interlaced video is rendered on a CRT. The mask even inherits that very same vertical scrolling illusion of a real CRT.
It might depend on the emulator if you can recreate that - I expect most just render the game in progressive scan.

Found a perfect HLSL config for all Raster horizontal games on my MAME cabinet posted by some genius on YouTube. It really does look very authentic, has improved the display immeasurably. At first I was getting jitter and sound stutter but once I turned the resolution down on my screen it was perfect. Also HLSL settings give you all the curve, border, reflection etc settings to make the screen look like you are on some burnt out CRT in a shit hole arcade by the seaside. Glorious

Anyone got a starter guide to building a Mister FPGA setup that they like? I've got a hankering for some retro gaming but the last time I dragged out my Mega SG or Super NT they weren't doing it for me as much anymore. Plus I kind of want a project to work on.

I know that Digital Foundry and My Life in Gaming have some long videos on the topic if that helps you get started. I would be keen to hear your impressions though, FPGA seems like the future (present?) of retro emulation for sure

Moving house later in the year, so getting hassled to "do something" will all my old consoles/games.
Given the limited time I have for gaming, I'm unlikely to ever plug stuff in and play, but am loathed to "get rid of it"!
Can't get the kids interested.

For a fee Have asked my company's landlord if we can get a wee room off them for temporary storage for 6 months - if I pack everything up and label them as "Important Files", I might get away with it! I keep imaging my great great grandchildren finding my chipped PSX1, and linking it into their neural plug, seeing the T Rex on Tomb Raider, before chucking it all into a space skip and going back to their pornodeck. It would be like us playing with a metal hoop and stick.

Show them the value of your stuff and explain that's only going to go up with time (*whisper* probably) My wife suddenly became ever so supportive when I worked out a rough value. She'd assumed it was good for the landfill

I’ve been doing a lot of PS2 and Gamecube emulation this week. Anyone have one of those Gamecube controller adapters Nintendo released for the Wii U and Switch Smash Bros. releases? Do they work on PC, and specifically, in Dolphin? Been considering getting one so I can play Gamecube gamed with their appropriate controller. An Xbox controller works, but the Gamecube’s button layout was so sporadic that it feels weirf swapping the X and B buttons in the emulator. With PCSX2, I can just use a PS5 controller and I’m set.

If you have a GC controller already, the multi tap uSB adapters you can pick up on Amazon work fine. If not, I'd recommend the new wireless BattlerGC or BrawlerGC controllers that just came out.

Yeah, I have an actual Gamecube, so the controller is set. I was just wondering if the adapters worked with emulation, because it’d just help with the illusion I guess.
I could buy Gamecube-like USB controllers, but I’d rather use the real deal if possible.

They definitely do. I didn't buy an official one, but I can't find the actual 3rd party one I got. I think the Amazon ones are all pretty much the same. I seem to remember that I had to select it in the Dolphin Controller settings and save it as a profile, but the buttons worked as expected straight away. I can have a go tonight if you need me to?
Edit: that was a confusing post. I mean I can't find the adaptor I bought on Amazon, I definitely have it. Anyway...

If you have it on hand, that’d be helpful.

If you have it on hand, that’d be helpful. So, the answer is yes it does work. I had to configure it as a standard controller, even though there was an option for Gamecube for Wii Adaptor. Also, if Steam was running, the controller was acting as a mouse so I closed Steam, not a problem. I bought this one but it's not available anymore, although like I said, I think they're all pretty much the same. Hope that's useful to you!

I have just bought a japanese SNES and unfortunately almost blew it up even with a transformer. The japanese power supply needs specific volt and ampere. The internet recommends a pal megadrive one supply without transformer or a france website. Anyone has any knowledge or experience on this front? Really worried whether this will work or not.
I live in The Netherlands, not sure if UK power net is different?

Yes the MD1 power supply works with the SFC. As far as I know, the EU power profile is the same as the UK.
Even so I’d just get any native power supply you can find for an MD.

In general unless the device itself expects Japanese mains voltage, it’s much better to just get a native compatible power supply rather than a step down transformer

In general unless the device itself expects Japanese mains voltage, it’s much better to just get a native compatible power supply rather than a step down transformer The reason I bought the step-down transformer was for the US/JP PS2 9000 series being rather sensitive. Its internal powerblock can die without it for no apperent reason. Based on your advice I will get a Megadrive for 25 euro including a pristine original power source. It both gives me a new console I did not have and the power supply for equal money compared to a native solution.
