Does anyone remember where the term "strafing" originated from?
It already seems like a very obscure verb, but I can't even remember in which context people first started using it for games.

I first saw it in Wolfenstein 3D, it might have been in one of the earlier id games but I can't really check right now. Couldn't work out what it did as we never realised it was a hold-to-activate type thing.

You could strafe in Catacomb but in Hovertank 3-D the Alt key is the afterburner. So I guess it was Catacomb in 1991.

Yeah, I think the first game to use it was Catacomb 3D.
But I'm not sure why they would use that term specifically, because I don't think strafing was supposed to mean sidestepping until then. Is it a slang that originated from BBS or other communities?

My guess is they mean it in the sense of attacking repeatedly while moving in a straight line, I don't think you could turn while strafing in DOS Wolfenstein, at least at first.

I think you could with a mouse, but the buttons combination would have made it very inconvenient. I'm pretty sure that, in very old 3D games like Catacomb and Wolfenstein 3D, strafing was more often used to navigate the map more conveniently once you knew the layout - you could run through corridors without changing your direction.
It's still a weird term to use. Catacomb 3D even had it on the menu, as if people would obviously know what it meant. The manual on the other hand, simply said "moving sideways".

GOG just announced a renewed focus on good old games. I sure don't suppose their continued losses on the store have anything to do with it.
If only they could get The Neverhood and No one Lives Forever.

Yeah, it must have hurt them to build out a Steam-like multiplayer and achievement system and have absolutely no one use it. Galaxy is pretty crappy all things considered.
This is welcome news though, I drifted away from GOG once they decided that their name was no longer an acronym for “good old games” and that new stuff was their focus. Well, that and their community forums suddenly going all alt-right, but that’s another story.

I still tend to choose GOG over Steam etc where possible for the DRMfree aspect.

Someone talk me out of spending $300 on a Roland MT32 just so I can have a proper authentic DOS experience even though MUNT is perfectly serviceable.

Been playing Guardian Heroes coop on the sega saturn. My god this game is truely special with its smooth challenging gameplay, bonkers story, and amazing replay value. Really makes me wonder why nothing quite like it was ever released. Closest comparison is Dragon's Crown but that one lacks the diversity in stages and multiple pathways. It also over complicates some classes.

There's Code of Princess by the same team. Well, the Platinum to Treasure's Clover, anyway.

This is about the only place I can post this, but I've been chipping away at Fire N' Ice on the NES recently (via NSO) and having never heard of it before, I'm really enjoying it.
It's like a blend of Solomon's Key, Catrap and Adventures of Lolo. It's a block puzzler that will have you staring at the screen trying to reverse engineer a stage as your tea goes cold, but it has a decent difficulty curve to it, so far.
I have fond memories of playing these kinds of games as a kid, with my mum or older brother. I think these are the kinds of games I'll try and get my kids into first.

I've been playing the little Amiga 500 mini I picked up last week. Filled it full of games, obvs, and it's bringing back so many happy memories.
These retro machines (I have the C64 and SNES ones as well) are always short lived entertainment but you can't beat the surge of happy nostalgia they elicit, which makes them worth the entry price alone imo.
Having all three Shadow of the Beast games alongside both Cannon Fodder games, gems like Assassin, Hired Guns, Project X etc. Marvellous. Absolutely marvellous.

I got a bunch of the mini consoles (ones that can be modded) and glad I have them, C64 and A500 next and they seem to be dropping in price. www.hotukdeals.com/search?q=amiga

I thought I would add the Miyoo mini and Analogue pocket to my pre order list. Miyoo mini will be here next month, Odin the month after(hopefully) and the analogue pocket is next year

Coincidentally, my Miyoo Mini just popped through the letterbox today. The new version comes in a little carry case with an SD reader and a 32gb card, jam-packed with dodgy roms already. Far too many in fact, it takes bloody ages to scroll through them all.
I haven't had chance to play anything yet but it seems well built. On first impressions I prefer the dpad on the Retroid Pocket 2+ but there's not much in it.
Going to update it and put Onion OS on it tonight, and sort the wheat from the chaff on the SD card.

There seems so many of these little retro handhelds about. I know I've asked this before, but what's the latest recommendation for, say, something that would run a whole load of old snes / mega drive titles?

Heh, seems like I've bricked my Miyoo Mini already. Tried to install Onion and it's not doing anything, black screen only. That's £45 down the drain. Some post-purchase googling has retrospectively warned me of this.
So, in answer to wunty's question - a Retroid Pocket 2+, not a Miyoo Mini!

I know I've asked this before, but what's the latest recommendation for, say, something that would run a whole load of old snes / mega drive titles? Loads that can do that well. Look at the Anbernic RG range or the original retroid pocket. You don't need the latest models, but the newer ones will handle more systems depending on what you get.

Maybe. I'm going to try a different SD card but the omens aren't good. It sounds like they're really temperamental.

Anyone run into expiring PSN games on PS3/PSP/Vita ?
I have a US, EU and JP account but dare not boot my PS3 now for fear of getting locked out.

So.. apperently its fixed. Would be nice to have seen any damm website reporting this. But I guess sites such as eurogamer are busy with news such as 92 year old grannie defeated Elden ring.

Among all the old computers I've tried on emulation lately, the Atari 800/XL might be my favorite.
Mountain King had a great concept, and still plays surprisingly well for a 40 years old game. And the Atari version is the best one. Bruce Lee also plays great just like the C64 version. Forbidden Forest... not so much. As far as C64 ports go, it's way too cut down.
The Amstrad is nice too, but all these Z80 computers seem to have issues with smoothness in general.
