Foo Fighters look and sound in good shape. Royal Blood will be on for another moan when the field empties and they come on to a quarter of this crowd next Royal Blood were the highlight of the night for me, great show and the guy's voice was much better than the last time I saw them, and the crowd seemed to be having a blast. Thank fuck because you probably don't want to start talking shit to 100k pissed up festival go-ers (even if if Glasto seems to be mostly middle-aged posers). Foo Fighters were as generic as ever, I tapped out when some guy started doing a keyboard solo in My Hero. Artic Monkeys were absolutely terrible.

I’m not really a fan so didn’t watch it but the Guardian review of Royal Blood was pretty scathing:
Of course it’s a matter of taste – but more than any band I’ve seen in recent memory, Royal Blood feel contrived in a cynical way: a low-overhead, easily-wrangleable concession to the (sizeable) part of the industry still catering to people who think “real” music is played with instruments. The name is apt: on stage, the duo communicate a lofty authority that feels unearned and doesn’t translate to real presence. From the enthusiastic response, however, Royal Blood fill a gap in the market and they do so competently, with all the trappings of flair and charisma and “authenticity”. At the end of their hour-long set, however, all you are left with is noise.

GnR tonight then....I think they'll give it a good go.

Royal Blood’s attitude and music has always reminded me of a fake Rock Band that’s been invented for a tv show by someone who doesn’t fully get it. Like the kind of show where someone would wear a t-shirt with the word ‘punk’ written on it as part of a rebellious phase.
But they seem super popular so they must have something people can grab hold of.
Should be interesting to see what people think of Axl Rose’s broken duck quack voice tonight. Watching recent clips it sounds like his voice is completely blown out these days.
Lizzo should be a blast but today seems like mostly one for just skipping around and seeing what catches my attention.

I caught the end/a snippet of their set and was disappointed hey didn’t lean into ‘we are royal blood and this is rock and roll’.
But, yes, they are for people who who occasionally want to listen to something a bit more up tempo than Coldplay in the car

RB are alright when they get to playing.
However there was far too much standing and posing in front of the crowd; soaking up the adoration they hadn't really earned and, therefore, wasn't there. Usually they're OK to watch at the festivals, but this time I couldn't shake the feeling they watch themselves in the mirror American Psycho style. Calm down.

Will be seeing Royal Blood supporting Muse at Milton Keynes tomorrow night and then again on tour at Hammersmith later this year. We personally really like them, they really delivered on albums 1 & 3 and the 2nd album had a few good tunes as well. Live the couple of times we have seen them they were great as well.
The Guardian review sounds like a hangover from their recent bad press from his strop at Radio 1 Weekend to me (yes they probably should have just kept their heads down and written if off as shitely organised rather than critising the crowd but there you go, sometimes your pissed off and shit happens…) and probably click bait. Yes they have attitude but that’s also what makes them deliver great music.
Most rock bands of high calibre do have attitude right?
Oh and real music is not always played with instruments but most of the best stuff definitely is?!

It’s usually earned, though. I dunno, I’ve always felt there’s something very cynical about them. Like they were deliberately positioned as the credible band you keep between your Ed Sheeran and Adele CDs.

Having an attitude is fine, but it needs to feel authentic. Not just like Radio X got fed through ChatGPT by a label exec

I personally keep my Coldplay cds between Adele and Ed Sheeran… alphabetically of course… Royal Blood is further down the shelf after Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead amongst others…
Music is my religion and it’s the best religion as it is free(ish) just like Peace

Agreed that’s not cool - good music is good music no matter how it is delivered. And yes I don’t like bands who are obviously signing to backing tracks too…

That sucks, what’s wrong with people?
Someone I know has played a lot of major festivals and big gigs and apparently that any band is fully live is the exception not the rule now. Basically everyone had some form of backing or audio correction going on nowadays.
Who we looking forward to today?
Lizzo, Christine & Queens, Guns & Roses, Rick Astley rumoured to be doing his Smiths tribute set

In defence of Royal Blood's "authenticity", those guys were constantly playing little pubs and clubs around the south-east 10+ years back and built up a solid following before recording their first album, it's not like they're some manufactured act. I can't remember how they caught a break with their first album but it was deserved, that's a really good album (the second album kinda turned me off a bit and I haven't bothered with the recent one, but that's beside the point). I can't quite work out what this reviewer's problem with them is... seems to be questionig whether they deserve their success whilst mocking their fans at the same time. Sounds like some pissy bullshit to me, I think the band's own pissy behavious at that recent festival has got "critics" backs up.

I watched a U2 concert video where they'd used the audio feeds from the soundboard and other sources to show what goes into the setup.
It gave me a appreciation for just how much is going on to keep the thing on track and the co-ordination needed by everyone. So between the music, the lighting, the camera, the sync to the animations on the screens it's a team effort and looked like a ton of work to get right. It made me see that the really big shows are just that and to just enjoy it. Man.

In my naivety I thought all bands were live live. Guess it doesn't really matter as long as there's some rawness that still comes through and it sounds good.

They’re live in the sense that the people on stage are playing their instruments and that’s what you’re hearing. But for most big acts there’s also a backing track with layered vocals or string parts or whatever, and at the very least they’ll have a click to sync to the lights.

Aside from their stage have a four day build time (there’s a good timelapse of it), there’s a pyro stunt where Till the singer fires a giant flare gun to the back of the stadium, and a bar later when they reach the back a set of fireworks on cables are triggered to come back the other way, and a bar later they reach the stage and trigger a huge explosion. At each new venue the whole thing has to be recalibrated to account for the size of the venue and the different cable lengths to make sure it all hits in time with the beat. It’s an absurd feat.

Watching Billynomates just now. Been a good set so far. I don't have an issue with it.
Wonder if those complaining about it would make the same complaint about Sleaford Mods given Andrew just presses a button on his laptop to start a track and dances while drinking beer while Jason rants.
Andrew basically has my dream job! 😀
Except i couldn't do the creating music bit in the studio he does. 😂
