Going to go all in and say that Half-Life deathmatch was better than both of them. HL2 Deathmatch allowed you to fling toilets at people, which makes it at least 10% better than all other mentioned deathmatch games. Speaking of old FPS games, I've been playing Heretic for the first time. Not sure how it has passed me by, but it's a cracking Doom-era game with some really fun and inventive ideas, particularly for the time it came out.

Heretic is excellent. I've wanted a new entry for ages, and the one thing I'm hopeful for regarding Microsoft buying Activision is that whatever rights hurdles were in the way for the IP are resolved now that Raven and id are under the same publisher. Skip Quake, give me a Heretic (or Hexen) reboot with the care and budget of the recent Doom and Wolfensteins.

Unreal Tournament had better bots I believe. It also had a game type that gave you specific objectives in order to win the round, which was too much fun but for the life of me cannot remember its name Return To Castle Wolfenstein 😉

I remember playing RtCW once and we had the documents or whatever it was and a group of us were running back to wherever you needed to take them. The others had run down some stairs and I threw a grenade behind us to stop anyone following - except the grenade bounced off the wall and went down the stairs. I genuinely just quickly exited the game by the console and have no idea what happened next. Probably swearing. At me

(It was actually called assault in UT and it was a great mode.) Edit: Ignore me, the original RtCW had objective based multiplayer too, apparently. Don't recall playing the multiplayer in that, although the single player was great.

Ahhh, FUCK. The RTCW version of Enemy Territory was fucking incredible back in the day. Fun fact: twas my first time being in a clan.

GBB. Great British Beef. Who knew I was full on Brexit before Brexit was a twinkle in Farage's nutsack. We were terrible btw. The clan leader had a massive emo quit on the IRC channel we used to use.

I always liked the look of Tribes but never got into it

I played a bit of Tribes: Ascend, which was by Hi-Rez (probably best known now for Smite). It was pretty great, but I don't think it ever really attracted much of a player count and got ditched by the developers a little over a year after it came out.
Being able to ski around the place was really fun.
No idea how accurately it captured the earlier games.

Assault, that must be it! THANK YOU!!!

Tribes: Ascend was fucking incredible.
Genuinely one of the best multiplayer shooters I've ever played. Movement was incredible, classes were well defined and the weapons were really interesting.
Nabbing a flag at speeds of 250mph is something I'll never forget. Criminally overlooked.
Loved a bit of Natural Selection back in the day too!

I can't remember which one I played (only briefly when it came out- might have been the demo) but, yeah, it seemed like great fun and the different loadouts or classes or whatever looked really cool. There was a disc type weapon which reminded me of Tron. Think it was the first game to have vehicles as well. Might have been Tribes 2
Shame I didn't play more of it, we'd have agreed on something!

Hah yeah - makes sense as it's completely different to both Q3 and UT. The weapon you're thinking of is the Spinfusor - quality weapon. Basically a rocket launcher in all honesty but a thumping good one at that!

Didn't Unreal 2 get a tribes-like MP mode?

Post by Jambowayoh on Feb 24, 2022 16:07:14 GMT
I'm not sure I think the mp mode in Unreal 2 was largely forgettable, no? Seriously though what a disappointingly bang average game it was. Looked amazing at the time but my god was it boring.

So the result of this big Quake 3 vs Unreal Tournament brawl is "Tribes is better than both?"

Quake 3, Tribes, then there's a gap, Unreal Tournament

Yeah, UT3 was awful, especially following UT2004.
Think the comments and poll have established that UT99 is the king.
Not a bad effort from Q3 though - tried its' best, just like back in the day.

People voted for Brexit
Unreal Tournament is Brexit

Knew that was coming, bastard!
Although Q3 is closer to Brexit as it's pretty much a 1v1 game, striking out on your own.
UT involved teamwork, hence it's the EU.
Flip reversed.

I must admit to saying I played both unreal and quake 3 quite a bit at the time.
I had just got a pc with a geforce 2 and some speakers with a bass bin. The bfg 3000(?) sounded absolutely outstanding.
