No worries. Yeah, ggs. If you wondered ‘what’s he doing?’ It’s because all of JPs moves are on backwards and I keep doing the wrong special.

Yeah GGs Nick. I want to hate Blanka but his victory dance is so delightful!
That command throw though.. who thought it would be a good idea to give him that?

Yeah, Ggs! The fun won’t last long. I’m riding the character unfamiliarity train to command throw town at the moment. I’m going to have to actually get good at some point.
I still can’t believe those character stats from the other day. I played four guiles and one cammy tonight. I quit out of one matchup because I really couldn’t play another one.

As a non-fireball character, the match tends to be very boring.

Found a Ryu of a similar skill level to me last night and it was an absolute blast - no matter how good you are, the game completely transforms when you find someone whose technique matches your own.
We had around 15 matches and I edged it something like 9-6. Picked up a few tips and made a new Street Fighter friend!

I'm having a bit of an issue with held input commands. I'm playing with an Xbox controller on PC, which is fine for the most part, especially for someone at my low skill level. However, using Chun Li as an example, I'm finding it difficult to consistently pull off certain moves that require a held button press, most notably Kikoken. Ones that require a downward press, like the Spinning Bird Kick, I'm having more joy with, but the hold back then forward just seems to barely ever come off for me. Not sure if I'm doing something fundamentally wrong ...

I wonder if it's the same problem I was having last night. I think I was rushing a bit, because moves just weren't working. I slowed myself down on the inputs and suddenly was executing everything I wanted.
Something else I found last night, and this had been annoying me for a few days, was that Drive Impact reversals weren't a case of me just being rubbish! I swapped LT and LB around and suddenly I was winning those battles. I think my LB must be weak on the edge where I press it. Very annoying as that's the 3rd Elite pad I've had!

You might just not have the charge. This may be teaching you to suck eggs, but remember you can store charge at all times. When the round starts, in the air, while youre getting thrown, while doing a move, during a super.... if you get used to holding downback when something else is happening, you should always have fireball or SBK on deck.
The other reason could be if you *are* doing that, the XBSS/SX pad seems to suck at hitting diagonals, which might be why SBK works but fireball doesnt. You might be just getting down. Go into training and look at your inputs.

Ok, I'm not happy with this game.
One of my fav characters, Jamie, I was playing my 10 placement matches for my ranking last night. I have expressed previosuly that I am not very good with Jamie, but I enjoy playing him.
Somehow I managed to win about 7 of those matches, and I beat an absolutely useless Gold rated player twice. So the game has now decided my Jamie character is ranked PLATINUM!!! hahahaha, my god, he's Bronze at best.
So now I cannot win at all with him. Every time I lose, I only lose about 40 points, so I can't even reduce my grade very easily by continuously losing. Now I don't want to play as him at all, because of this and the unfair match-ups.
Anything like this happen to anyone else?

I havent actually played any ranked so my meagre power level is hidden. It might be why the majority of people who play me in battle hub kinda suck.

I think I may be sticking with the battle hub from now on then. I guess it will give a lot of people a lift when they think they have beaten a Platinum ranked player, lol. Once I was platinum with Jamie, I must of lost about 10 games on the trot. You would think the game would re-evaluate your ranking instead of just dropping a few points each match.

Ranked is a strange one, thought I'd play some on my lunch break just to actually improve and I must have played 10 people in a row who would quit after the first fight. Is this a common thing now?

There's quite a gulf in ability within ranks isn't there?
I've only played in casual/unranked but one Gold absolutely hammered me 10-0 and played as well as I've seen some people in Master play whereas someone else ranked Gold was on a similar level to me and I edged it 7-5.

No in ranked it will be similar players too you in the league. It can also be down to their familiarity with the player and so forth. There's always, always a possibility of beating someone who's much better than you mainly just by reading their style and just plain overconfidence.

Apparently so, which is the worst! Although now that I think about it, someone who wins the first match then quits is _actually_ the worst.

The last person I played was a Manon and it was a tight game with one round each and the last round with one hit between us they won and then they quit straight away. Really annoying. Then I noticed that they had a 9 win streak which explains a lot really.

I've found most people hang around for another match. Think I've only had 1 or 2 people leave after the first match.
Managed to get a Double K.O in a game the other day. It was in a match where we had already won 1 round a piece, so it ended in a draw. It still had the time after it announces the KO and when the winners animation plays, so it left us with the perfect comedy silence.

Go into training and look at your inputs. Cheers for this, Nick. Definitely helped using the store charge: I could consistently pull off both the fireball and the SBK if I was charging the hold during another animation etc. Still struggling to do it 'cold', though. Jumped into the training to check the inputs and the back>forward>punch does appear to be registering, just not the hold part, particularly when used from a standing start (i.e. if I jump and do it, then there's often no issue). Weirdly, I seem to have more luck if I'm pushed up against the corner, as opposed to move back ... I do think it's just me fucking up the execution, but seems so odd at times. Frustrating. Still absolutely loving the game, though. With MK1 on the horizon too I suspect my fighting game itch is going to be sorted for a long time.

I remember testing this a bit (can't recall if it was with my avatar in World Tour or just in training), and the animation needed to make almost 2 full steps back for it to be long enough to do a fireball from standing. So, it is longer than you think.
Good to know about charging it during animations. I also struggled a bit to do these in a fight, particularly the spinning kick.

You should probably get used to charging fireballs with down back because you really don’t want to be walking yourself into the corner

Yeah, definitely. I was more just doing it whilst testing to get a feel for how long you actually needed to do it for. It was something I was struggling with too and ended up putting me of Chun-Li after initially liking her.
Should test again knowing I can charge it during animations though.

You can even charge if you're attacking forward as in a heavy or a jab and pressing back as you attack, you'll barely move back and it will allow you to combo into a fireball. Or like a jumping medium kick and pressing down as you come down, a few medium punches, like for Guile, and then that combo into a flash kick.
It does take a bit of getting used to but most people I play against who are charge characters have that shit locked down really well. Like Onny's endless headbutts.

Once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. Like with blanka, if you hold down back and do ex-ball, it passes through them and juggles. If you carry on holding down, the charge carries while the ex-ball is in flight and you can immediately do an up-ball to hit them in the air.

Yeah the down back has really worked for me now, cheers. I think the main issue was releasing too early in some cases; if I stupidly count it out in my head, I tend to be able to get it more consistently (even without down back).

Mentioned before that I struggled a bit to reliable execute the super moves. Not tested too much in actual matches, besides some against a CPU, but something that seems to have made a big difference was seeing the advice that you press button after the movement input. Previously, I think I was hitting as my movement was just about to complete the second quarter circle. Adding a slight delay before pressing the button, so that I've definitely completed the motion, seems to have made quite a difference.

The inputs are really generous/I suck in this and Im *constantly* getting accidental supers. If the character has a fireball and a super on the same motion and button, I'll get the super quite regularly. Like Marisa. If I have two bars and walking forward, if I go for the big bonk punch, Im getting super.

I haven't played this much of late I need to get back on it. I blame Diablo 4 as well as exam month and all these exams to mark.

Two buttons, maybe, but three, nah. With the changes they have made to most moves, Ive actually settled on just using the dual sense, mainly because its wireless and im lazy. The only move that still needs three buttons is, seemingly, blanka hop and Ive mapped that to R3 but I wouldnt want to rely on that for supers, really. Three buttons is a pain in the arse on a standard pad. That change and getting rid of mash inputs is great.
Still, I would think they may revisit supers in some way because I do see quite a few accidental ones at scrub tier.
