Considering we have some pretty major DLC on the way, I thought this would be as good a time as any to create a new thread for this game. I'll add info on the DLC below, but feel free to use this thread to organise online meet ups or whatever.
So, the new DLC is 48 tracks, split into 6 packs, being released every 3 - 4 months over the next two years. There are 2 ways to grab the DLC, but for those who don't know, you actually don't need to pay to play the new content.
Firstly, you can choose to buy the DLC from the eShop. That will set you back £22.49, but you'll own all that content forever.
Secondly, if you're an Expansion Plus subscriber, you'll get the DLC thrown in as part of that subscription, at no extra cost. If you let your sub expire, however, you will lose access to the DLC.
And for those who don't want to buy the DLC, you can still actually access all the new tracks. To avoid dividing the player base, Nintendo had decided all players will have access to the new tracks when playing online. You just need to wait for the tracks to appear in the lobby rotation and vote accordingly.
This does mean you can't play them offline, but its a nice freebie for those who don't have the extra money to spend.
I can't believe I'm still playing this game, almost 8 years after it's original release! I've not really thought about it, but it has to be one of my all-time favourite games. I'm genuinely excited for the new tracks and I have no idea how they're going to top this game in the future.

For sure! I am a little rusty, but consider myself to be a pro. I'll be up for this when the new DLC releases.
Maybe we should get a friend code thread going again?

I was reading on resetera that that the new tracks won’t be in the online playlist till 22nd. I don’t know whether the new tracks will have their separate lobbies/playlist for a little while.

They look great! Wasn't there some ho-hah over these being implemented in some half-baked way? Can't tell that from the video.

They do looks nice, but the definitely lack a smidge of detail compared to the originals. Still great, though.
Also, you can download the DLC now and it'll be live at 11pm tonight.

Yeah I think the ohh ha over the graphics has been blown out of proportion, but that’s gamers for you. I do think they do look nicer than what we seen so far to be fair but still.
Played a couple of normal cups yesterday. It’s ridiculous how well this game still plays.

Had a quick run through of all 8 tracks this morning, Ninja Hideaway definitely seems the highlight and wouldn't have looked out of place in the base game. The rest are all fine, and definitely look a tad simplistic in parts, but I'd forgotten just how much the colours pop in this game, even more so on the OLED screen.
Bit of a shame there are no anti-grav sections with these tracks, but I guess the sheer quantity of them still makes the whole package great value for money.

The Tour tracks are actually quite good. I like that each lap changes the route. Its confusing initially, but it keeps you on your toes.
That Ninja track is great. So many shortcuts and ramps that you could dodge red shells simply by splitting away from the pack.
Mushroom Ridge though. That's my favourite of the courses. Still as fun as ever to drift from one corner to the next. I almost lapped the AI on that track.
All in all, its a decent set of tracks. Visually they look very flat if you're switching between the new and old tracks, but they still look nice enough. It certainly explains the lower than expected price tag.

They aren't new tracks are they? I thought they are from the mobile game.

They're all retro or tour tracks, but for some one like me that doesn't really do phone gaming, the tour ones are new.
The tracks are all very clearly lifted from the tour game though. Textures and geometry are more simplified, but they've thrown in extra characters and objects to try and make the tracks feel more populated.

Shroom Ridge and the Sky one aren't in tour, although with how they look I wouldn't be surprised if they were made with the intention of being ported to Tour.
I echo everyone else, it's great to get new courses and they're good fun and easily worth it, but Nintendo are clearly phoning it in here.

For the price tag, I am ok with this. Especially if the core development team are working on the next Mario Kart, or something else altogether.

They would all be new too I think. It's a shame they didn't give them the proper treatment though, it can't be that much work.

I mean, the original Mario Kart 8 Tracks are 8 years old now and visually they still hold up amazingly well. I'm guessing they were heavily optimised for their time. Especially considering they hit a locked 60fps.
I bet they could have done the same for this DLC booster pack, but I reckon it would be a lot more time consuming. This DLC feels like it wasn't even planned until fairly recently, given Nintendo's apparent plan to extend the Switch's shelf life due to chip shortages.
I wouldn't be surprised if the core team weren't plugging away at a new Mario Kart to launch a new console at some point last year, but then had this pitched to them and have either split their time and resources between 2 projects, or they are all working to a tighter schedule.
I don't really want to defend them in this case, but considering the price tag and the renewed focus on the Switch, rather than a shift to a successor, this is still pretty passable for me.
It would be very nice if they were to bump of the visuals with every DLC drop though. Enough folk are complaining and Nintendo do do seem to listen and react eventually. If Animal Crossing and the N64 games on NSO are anything to go by.

Shame the visual quality is still flat, but it looks like a great selection of tracks. I can't wait.
