I don‘t suppose this runs with 60 fps on PS5 or Series X, does it? Hoping the sequel will be about the Duke finally commissioning those new roads. 😀

Not sure about PS5 but sounds like 30fps is the only option on Xbox.

Cheers, yeah, 30fps/1080 for PS5 too, it seems.

Not massively into RPGs but is this the one where you can have sex with a dragon?

Um... a dragon does penetrate you with its finger, in a manner of speaking, but I don't think you can take things any further than that (unless I missed a REALLY interesting side quest).

Cheers, yeah, 30fps/1080 for PS5 too, it seems. I could've sworn the PS4 version got a 1440p patch on Pro, which should also work through PS5, naturally. But I'm finding no evidence of it so maybe I imagined it. It and MGSV got late Pro patches, I thought. Still 30fps though.

Went underneath Gran Soren for a quest and encountered an Ogre. Was pretty long and drawn out fight but at one point the thing dropkicked my main pawn off the edge of the spiral staircase falling to her death which made me actually scream "NO" at the TV. Damn good game

Ogres go for the women first, in the main game, the pervs. In the add on, they prefer a male party.
Love all those little ideas the game had, from pitch black nights, to torches that actually don’t work when they get wet, to the Ogres above. It’s such an immersive world.

It's the randomness of the fights that makes me smile the most. Sometimes you blunder into a right royal rumble and it takes an age to drop them, and it's total chaos all the time, but *boy* it's SOOOOO satisfying.
I want to fire it up right now.

Couldn't agree more about the night - probably the only game where night time felt like a 'proper' night, full of danger.

Yeah, I remember my first venture outside. Had no oil in my lantern as I didn't really know what I was doing, and I was miles away and it got very very dark and I started to shit myself when I heard a really loud noise coming from what looked like some trees. Then a bloody Chimera comes flying at me, knocks me for six, and all the pawns start lobbing spells and going nuts. Couldn't see a fucking thing, and then a dragon also turned up for shits and giggles. The only light I had to use was the dragons fire breath! I ended up bravely running in one direction telling my pawns to leggit too, and hid in a hut somewhere till it got light. It was epic

Similar experience, I had to escort someone from Gran Soren way far north. Started in the morning and took the whole day travel to get there. Running past a lot of enemies I wasn't supposed to fight and exemplified by the time I was travelling back at night and heard a noise, only to find a chimera leap at me from the darkness.
I found one of my quests had failed as a result of turning in a story quest. Kinda wish there was a prompt before taking on a mission but sure, product of its time and all that

The article doesn't really explain why Dragon Dogma's magic system is supposedly so great. The only thing mentioned is that there is some longer casting time with an accompanying animation for the big spells. Is that really it?

I think it's more linked with the animations during the casting, combined with the spectacular lightshow that follows making it a glorious few moments
Or something like that. It is rather special though, the magic in that game. Seems almost...real.
But anyway, a sequel!

Exactly, it's saying lots of magic/spells in games is just a gun, whereas in DD the time it takes to cast the spell and the accompanying animation give it weight that other games lack. It was a cool game. I hope it has the pawn system as well as live coop this time. Can't wait.

I'm thinking of going back to this game once I'm done with the BioShock DLCs.
What kind of level should I be before going to Bitterblack Isle? I've seen comments online saying 40+, but I was only in the mid-30s when I finished the main campaign - is it worth grinding side quests to gain a few levels, or would that be unnecessary?

Seen this game on sale for four bucks, on PC. Maybe I should give it a try. What's the closest game to it?
The Xbox version is even cheaper and I could use my reward points, but I guess it's 30fps only.

It's kind of similar to Dark Souls, I guess?

I'd describe it as a straight-up fantasy RPG along the lines of Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, or The Witcher; however, it has some cool mechanics that make it stand out from said crowd, including probably the best combat system of the bunch.

Yeah I always thought it felt a bit like open world souls. Well, before Elden Ring ofc.

Plus it's funny. Your pawns are essentially excitable children.

Yeah, you'll never get sick of hearing; "Tis a troubling foe". Still chuckle thinking about when I was messing about in Gran Soren and all I heard was a load of splashing accompanied by "I'm soaking wet!", only to look round and find all my pawns pissing about in the fountain.
Idiots.

But the weird online functionality, the general tone, the massive monsters, all of that remind me of a Souls game. Which is not to say that they're very much alike! Just that I can't think of much else that even resembles it. It's a very strange game.

Heh yeah 😅
I think the souls comparison comes mostly from the aesthetics, setting and difficulty. The hud is kinda similar if you squint a bit too.
Nighttime feels very treacherous too, when the hollow..cough.. zombies come out.
