Rivals
Finished this last week.
Unashamedly trashy in the extreme, but also ridiculously entertaining to boot.
David Tenant is literally devouring the scenery whole, having the time of his life.
Also never expected Danny Dyer to be at the centre of the most unexpectedly tender love story I've seen recently, mind blown.
8/10

Twin Peaks S1 - 8/10
Slightly late to this of course, but slightly in love with it already. It's both tremendously dated and yet difficult to date at times. I love that absolutely every character has skin in the game in the sprawling story web, either as an antagonist or a victim. Straight into S2 this evening.

I'm sure you have already been warned, but S2 can be a bit of a slog at times. Still has highlights though, so worth sticking with. The final episode in particular is something else. Fire Walk With Me and Season 3 are stunning as well, but very different.

Be warned, Twin Peak S2 dips a little in the middle - it's still great but not quite hitting the high notes as often, though it really ramps back up towards the end so stick with it.
S3 is quite different. A lot changed in the 25 years between seasons, not least TV norms and S3 is as much as reinvention of what is possible (as S1 did when it first aired) as it is a continuation of the TP story.
I'd leave a bit of a gap between S2 and S3 (and watch Fire Walk With Me).

Thanks - it also reminded me that I reluctantly abandoned Deadly Premonition halfway through. Might find a walk through video - not sure I could face those controls again...

The Penguin 9/10
Good pacing, great acting and a decent story. There’s not much to fault it other than a few of the core ideas and motivations have been done a few too many times before, but it’s done well.

Two seasons into Slow Horses and I’m absolutely loving it. It helps that it’s all shot round where I used to work, but it’s a lot of fun and just predictable enough for me to feel smug when I figure out what’s going on. Strong recommend.
The Bear season three. Somehow even less good than season two, endless montages and eyewanking over food is all very well but they threw out the narrative and character development to do it. At least they ditched Claire Bear, although Carm does exactly the same amount of unfocussed staring as when she was there so it’s not exactly fixed the problem. I like the stunt casting from Ep 5 and the acting is top notch, but it’s spinning in place and it takes forever for anything to happen at all. One to binge watch when you’ve got a spare evening.

Mortimer & Whitehouse Gone Fishing series 7
They really stripped it back to basics this series. No gimmicks or fancy trips. It felt like the camera crew had taken a step back so the interactions between Bob and Paul were even more meandering and natural than usual (even for this show)
There is a slight air of melancholy too. I think its just them starting to face the transition from middle aged to old.
Its still beautiful telly though. I’m finding more and more of my solo tv choices are programmes that are either quiet shows about middle aged or male friendship, or programmes where very little happens slowly and quietly. This being all if the above.

I have been waiting for this to finish, so I can binge over a week or so. We are so spoilt now that I expect, no demand! series drop in one hit. Who remembers (most on here as we are old gits) waiting for movie to drop on VHS several months after the cinema, kids today etc...

His episode with Alan Davis literally covers the topic of middle aged male friendship. Watching that one whilst on a walk in Peak District and popping into The Barrel Inn for a pint made me want to message mates right away to do the same. middle aged to old men walking

The Penguin - 8/10
I’ve got serious tv series fatigue and can barely bring myself to watch anything nowadays, so give it a 9 if you still love binge watching things. It’s very good and Farrell is amazing in it. Big budget too. But I don’t think I’m built for tv series’s anymore, they always seem to drag.
God knows how i used to do 22 ep shows

Been slowly making my way through Detectorists again and realised that I had seen any of the last series of Digging For Britain so started that recently too. Those long Sunday evenings where my dad would sit back with a double-header of Time Team and Scrapheap Challenge make so much sense to me now I’m in my 40s and my boy is attending school. It occasionally resurfaces on iplayer when BBC Scotland repeats it but Roaming In The Wild is another fine entry into the couple of friends doing something outdoors genre. Unbelievable soundtrack by Beluga Lagoon too.

Agatha all along 8/10 We got another month of Disney+ to binge a couple of series (and watch Deadpool 3 again . This was one of them and we quite enjoyed this. It's quirky. All the recent Marvel stuff didn't really interest me (apart from DP3), but I can't really call this Marvel.

Futurama - Season 12
Better than the last season but still only average with good bits here and there. Hoping it grows on me as their first comeback seasons did.
It's still great to have more Futurama. It's the ultimate comfort TV for me.

Lioness S2 (gave up partway through episode 3).
In the space of one year I’ve gone from loving everything Taylor Sheridan to barely being able to get through any of his series. I’m not sure if there’s been a massive drop in quality or I’ve just had enough of it.
The first season of this wasn’t his best but it was fast paced, plenty of action and entertaining enough. This one feels like a soap with extra guns. Everyone is shouting all the time and always angry.
Tulsa King S2 was also awful, Mayor of Kingstown S3 was poor and the new Yellowstone isn’t off to a great start.

Pesky Blinders Season 1. Forgot how amazing this was before it shit the bed at the end.
Also discovered Anna Calvi scored it which was a big surprise - the cello/violin part at the end of the season is brilliant. Zimmer-esque. Loved her first two albums (she did a Peaky Blinders herself after those sadly IMO).

Hoping I enjoy it more than you but am awaiting all the episodes. Of course the surgeon dad is the only redeemable character in the whole thing but then it is about the CIA.

Sweetpea
Ella Purnell and her massive eyeballs gets a bit stabby.
The series’ main failing is that you never really root for anyone. If you thought Dexter could be annoying you’re not going to grow on the drippy lead here. In fact, just about everyone in the series is a bit of a personality vacuum. It’s saved by its brevity - at six episodes it’s an easy watch. Any more and I’d probably struggle.
It’s not overtly bad… it’s just so mid. Like just about any Sky show. It’s the home of mid entertainment. Sky. Believe in midder.

24 season 4
Started out with the Turkish trying to do multiple Chernobyls throughout USA. It follows a template like all the seasons to this point. Jack isn't part of CTU, then he somehow is because everyone else sucks. Something happens to the boss of CTU and somebody else takes over, not that Jack ever listens to them. There is a double agent in CTU, do they even do background checks? The first attack plan from the baddies is just a distraction from the real big baddies who are doing a bigger and more terrible attack. In this case nukes again.
Not that I'm complaining. It is great TV. The cast is fantastic again. Thought it started off a bit slow, but the second half was mental.

Mr Inbetween S1-S3 (Disney+)
Created, written and produced by the Oz star Scott (The Grin) Ryan. Pretty snappy 25 min episodes, plenty of laughs and violence.
Enjoyed it a lot. No more though, according to Ryan.
8/10 overall

Curb S4 - 5/5 Definitely the best season up to this point. Contains pretty much all of the stand out Curb moments that spring to mind, pretty much every episode is a 'oh! its this one!' moment.
Curb S5 - 3/5 Good, but feels a bit cobbled together compared to S4, particularly the ending. Some of the episodes actually feel dated which is unusual for Curb.
Industry S3 - 3/5 A pretty big let-down compared to S2, which was brilliant. Never really gets going and doesn't build to anything particularly satisfying. The central dramatic plot thrust is introduced too late and feels rushed, while Kit Harington is brilliant but absent for the entire middle section of the season.

Ludwig Series 1
Despite it being really difficult to not see Mark Corrigan solving crimes, it really is a great bit of comfort-murder telly.
Hits all the right notes, funny, dramatic. Gathers all The suspects for the reveal each episode and an overarching story too that is nicely resolved for next season.

Scavengers Reign - 7.5/10
The world building is phenomenal. Some of the best ever. I like the characters and general story too, but my god it's slow, even with 20 minute episodes. Think it would have benefited from being 8 instead of 12. Would watch another season, but looks like that's not going to happen sadly.

From S3
Honestly I barely know what is going on. It is basically just a boring shit version of Lost, with a cast of mostly bad actors. I kinda liked season 2, but this was just a case of, "oh here is something else weird happening with no rhyme or reason" multiplied by 100. It's a case of YMMV for how interested you are in having 100 questions with no answers. But I thought it was a bit shit.

After The Party (all4)
Drama from New Zealand following the fallout of a wife accusing her husband of being a paedophile. Only six episodes long but its glacially paced. Looks beautiful with everything shot as if its happening in the grey half-light at dawn for some reason.
The acting is the big selling point here. As the main woman deals with the impact on her family and social life, people in the community do and don’t believe her and the alleged paedo is a full active member of town life.
Its been getting five stars everywhere and I’m not sure I’d agree as there are a couple of moments of plot-necessary stupidity required to keep the story moving but the performances are all five stars.
Apparently the central wife and ex-husband are a real life partners and she co-wrote this which might explain how perfectly cast they are.
