Shogun - 9/10 Pretty much just echoing what everybody else has already said. An absolutely stellar cast, without a dud in there aside from Cosmo (who in fairness to him did start to grow on me towards the end) A wonderful score by Atticus Ross and pals too. Episode 9 was ridiculous! I ended up loving Cosmo's performance as Anjin: they were very clever in making him an avatar for the viewer, slowly struggling to understand this alien culture, and slowly developing some form of agency. I thought in particular his offer in episode 9 was heartbreaking. But, yeah, early on it was really hard not to see him as Succulent Chinese Meal guy with his mannered delivery:

Shogun - 9/10 ........ Episode 9 was ridiculous! I found that a bit underwhelming as loads of people had mentioned how good it was etc., so I was expecting some real magic moment. It was a good episode, but I had built it up in my head to deliver something that it couldn't. I'm talking more about the Mariko threatening to commit seppuku scene than the ending. That entire scene was just ridiculously tense.

Baby Reindeer 7/10 All the people in it are awful in different ways. It states it’s a true story (not based on) giving the false impression that all of it actually happened and a few of the major points didn’t which feels a little irresponsible given the subject. It is unsettling and different but it feels a bit like those true crime things which always have an air of exploiting those involved, despite being fairly well written and acted. Yeah I'd land on that score too. After all the shit that happens in that show I actually found the small section with his dad near the end and what he subtly reveals to be one of the most genuinely affecting parts of it all. What the actor playing the dad does with about 5 words of dialogue said so much.

Finished it last night, it's heavy watching. Wonder if the people will get outed now because of it.

As per my review, I loved it, but the reaction since it came out has got me concerned. Maybe it is a fault of the series to not unilaterally say that it’s based on true events rather than it being the gospel truth, because now we have dickheads who think they’re entitled to take the law into their own hands and get people involved who probably had nothing to do with it.
As ever, this is why we can’t have nice things.

Apparently that sort of thing is normally assessed by the production company and network, a former BBC head of compliance person has said there’s a lot they would have had to change for it to appear there. Looks like Netflix didn’t do that.
It wouldn’t have been an issue 20+ years ago but it definitely is now.

Star Trek - Strange New Worlds S2
It was alright. Still my favourite of the new Trek series, but not sure if I preferred the first season. There was a wide variety of episodes, but having two "novelty" episodes in a 10 episode season felt unwarranted, and weren't my favourite episodes at all.
7/10 overall I think, but some higher and some lower.

Mammoth (iplayer)
Comedian Mike Bubbins plays a 1970s Welsh PE teacher who is transported to the present day where he teaches PE at a modern high school with comedic results. Its a nice change to see a new BBC sitcom that isn’t interested in trying to be a comedy drama or is really about feeling sad all the time but its also never quite side-splitting either.
Its only three episodes long and so makes for a good little filler show when you need something thats only concern is being daft.

Except I always have this idea of 70s PE teachers as being pedophiles, which would take some of the giggles out of it.

Think I saw a trailer a while back and it looked alright.

That’s the one. Its good stuff. Feels like a bit of a throwback for it to “only” be a sitcom even without the 70s man premise.

Baby Reindeer - 10/10
Wowww. Binged it in 24 hours. Absolutely extraordinary. Even more amazing with some post reading. But don't read a thing - go in blind. Absolutely insane story and wickedly funny to boot. Yeesh.

I really enjoyed Mammoth. The series is better than the original pilot with how they have toned down his niceness, and elevated the dynamic with the female PE coach, who is now his boss also. The pilot is still worth tracking down however and is a unique episode rather than them refilming it, and fleshing it out, for the series, like other past shows have done.
Him doing weights at the parents evening had me chuckling the next day and it has been a while since a sitcom has done that.

Fallout 9/10 Loved it. Really great cast, right amount of fun and cheese, made a good story in the Fallout universe. Looking forward to more. Only downside was some of the CGI gore was a wee bit crap.

I’d love a second series of Mammoth to have more school stuff. Its a shame there was only three episodes when it seems like a premise with plenty of mileage.

I am a big fan of Mandy and the shorter episodes really seem to work for that, so I am happy for them to mix up length and amount as long as they keep doing them.

Went through the Outlaws again over the last week or so. Still bloody brilliant, 9/10. I don't know what it is, but the south west accent in anything always makes me smile. It's great fun isn't it. Season 3 starts some time next month. quadfather

Fallout 7/10
A genuine surprise in how good it was. Great cast and nailed the tone. Needed a couple more episodes I think as the finale felt clumsy and rushed.

The Curse (Showtime/Paramount+) - 10/10
A24 show created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie starring both of them and Emma Stone. It follows a couple of privileged white property developers as they attempt to ethically gentrify a neighbourhood in New Mexico as they themselves are filmed for a reality tv show called Fliplanthropy.
It's awkward, satirical black comedy of the highest possible order. It's also surreal and reminded me a lot of Twin Peaks. Emma Stone is phenomenal and if you enjoy it at all you must stay with it until the end.

Finally got round to finishing Succession... S1 8/10 S2 10/10 S3 7/10 S4 9/10
My only criticism is that some of the story arcs are unneccesarily dragged out, but I just loved the characters and how some of them evolved - special mention to Matthew Macfadyen, because I think Tom went from my least to most favourite character during his time in the show.

Seems a bit harsh on Season 3 in my humble opinion. The last two episodes are dynamite and I’d give the season at least an 8 just by virtue of the dick pic scenario.
