But TLJ performed basically the same function as ESB. The first in both trilogies was where the goodies won and everything was grand. Then the second one was where they said 'hey, you know how you thought this was going to go? Well it's not!'. Which basically gave the 3rd film the option to go anywhere... but it just went back to the old blueprint. It didn't give the option to go anywhere good though as he answered all the questions of the first film in the TLJ as below (that's why I keep saying it would have worked better as a final film). Who is Rey and who are Reys parents? - nobodies Who is Snoke? - a nobody and we definitely do not need anymore information on him Who is Hux? - a comedy character, there for 'Your Mom' jokes Why is Luke in isolation? - coz he's in a grump Who is Finn? - a side character from now on but lets give him a love interest Who is Poe? - an idiot Who are the knights of Ren? - I've no idea, what are they? That Phasma seems interesting? - yeah no What would happen if Leia got sucked into space? - she would hold up her umbrella and fly through the stars back into the ship Seen as the middle of a trilogy it works fine though. Kylo makes a power play but doesn't have to deal with the consequences just yet. Rey gets stronger but isn't ready yet to accept she might just be a good Force user, and should not be tied to who her parents were/were not. Poe acts like rebel within the rebellion and sees what being a hothead costs. Finn is finally ready to stop being selfish and tries to heroically sacrifice himself in the wrong situation. Luke needs to step back and understand that just because he was the hero once he doesn't have all the answers, is allowed to make mistakes and shouldn't focus on ancient texts so much at the expense of the present... All unfinished arcs with redemption/realisation/acceptance possible in the next installment (arguably Luke's arc ends in 8). Rey's parents are nobodies? Fine. Better than fine, very plausible. One of the stupidest aspects of the prequel trilogy was the coincidences required to have certain characters meet. Anakin knowing Greedo, Anakin building 3PO, R2D2 being the only astromech who isn't ignored right after the adventure, Tatooine being the hub of any and all adventures and so on. Right now with Ep 9 BB-8 stumbles across the granddaughter of Palpatine, isn't that fortuitous? Snoke was a nobody just like the emperor was, just a bad guy to have a plot. Hux is all manners of incompetent, but even that could be interesting to see unfold with Force man-child and incompetent fuck-up now running an army without supervision. Another question for TFA that could have been mentioned in Ep 9 was revealing where Maz got Luke's lightsaber from for instance? In the end it's still just space wizards and pew-pew, and so was the original trilogy. But maybe having some internal consistency wouldn't have hurt...

Honestly I get why people defend it, especially if you don't want to be associated with the internet nerd rage. But I thought it was boring and terrible as a movie in its own right. Never mind if you look at it as an abject star wars story failure.
I find TLJ and TROS pretty much unwatchable. TFA is watchable but when you know what happens in the two films afterwards it is just a mess. I find the same with the prequals, I can watch the phantom menace but AOTC and ROTS are unwatchable shite.
I also reckon Solo mainly failed miserably on release due to the stink of TLJ.

That Phasma seems interesting? - yeah no What would happen if Leia got sucked into space? - she would hold up her umbrella and fly through the stars back into the ship This sort of stuff is just nonsense though, from people who’ve never studied screenwriting. Write me a list of all the “unanswered questions” from the original Star Wars. fandom are so entrenched in what they think will be served them in a movie- eg, exactly what they saw in the films / TV show / comics books they first saw - that they can’t even imagine what a good screenwriter could do with a film and so declare it impossible. The Last Jedi introduced a decimated rebellion (How will they rebuild?) a weird romance between Rey and Kylo Ren (Who will tempt who to which side of the force? Will a third side of the force be introduced?) made Ren the supreme leader (What will he do with ultimate power? Will his lack of self control be his undoing, or destroy the galaxy?) Hux a supremely jealous rival to him (Will anyone care what Hux does?) Leia is powerful in the force, how will that come onto it? (You can’t blame Carrie Fischers death on Rian Johnson) and there’s a whole universe of force-sensitive people out there, should they be constrained by a fusty and failed religious order? (Yes, but only because Jedi trademark very valuable.) Star Wars has an entire universe of possibilities of where to go with its plot. The fact you think Last Jedi was closing doors is completely false, it’s was throwing them open, allowing the third movie to be something other than disappointing or predictable answers to questions that were stupid, derivative and contrived. It was obvious to me that Rey would be a Palpatine because they had to shoe-horn a stupid lineage in there to copy what a surprise forty years ago, and Palpatine was the only possibility when you realised they weren’t going to do Skywalker or Solo and Kenobi would have no bearing on the plot, it would be a massive so what. When Johnson whipped out the possibility that Rey was just some random and the lineage thing a dumb red herring, it was a genuine surprise and a great direction. the third movie could have introduced any manner of story that didn’t rely wholly on “remember this?” pigshit. It could have been surprising. Instead it trotted out Death Stars for the fourth time (“remember the death stars? now it’s Death Stars ON A BOAT!”) and pooped out some nonsense about The Emperor surviving (“remember that time he said “unnatural’ in that old movie? Here it is again!”) and so Rey needs to be a Palpatine so he can infest her body (…) and Rey makes out with Ren even though he blew up five planets and killed billions of people.

I'm not even a massive star wars fan though. Obviously I've seen them all but I've not been excited about a star wars release since the phantom menace. So I'm looking at the new trilogy as a Story arc and I found it terrible from the second movie onwards. TFA was a safe bet start that just copied the original Star Wars and threw in a handful of new characters.
I'm not sure how anybody can think either the TLJ or TROS are actually good films, I mean TLJ is based around the stupidest slowest spaceship chase ever put to film with a load of goofy stuff tacked on and that Casino middle section...

Alternatively: Who is Rey and who are Reys parents? - nobodies. Great. That opens up a lot more posibilites and means they won't be repeating the stuff from the previous movies and making her Luke's Daughter or Palpatines grandaughter or something dumb like that. Who is Snoke? - a nobody and we definitely do not need anymore information on him. Nice. Who is Hux? - somebody who is going to get more and more angry and try to take over from Kylo, possibly leading him to more extreme actions. Why is Luke in isolation? - Was this a question we were asking? Who is Finn? - a guy who has learned from his mistakes and now has a much better motivation to aid the resistance than he had in TFA (which was basically that he was folowing Rey around because... i dunno.. she's cute?) Who is Poe? - a guy who has learned from his mistakes and is possibly now ready to take some responsibility and lead the resistance Who are the knights of Ren? - I'm not sure anyone was asking this either. They hadn't even appeared or been mentioned in the movies yet had they? That Phasma seems interesting? - Again, they could probably have done more with her, but this was hardly a big question. What would happen if Leia got sucked into space? - it would awaken latent force abilities. That's interesting, maybe she'd have a new dynamic with Rey now. It seems like the people who were most disappointed with TLJ were the ones who had built up all these complex fan theories about all these different points, like who Phasma was or who the Knights of Ren were, or how wizards go to the toilet, or who Snoke might be and somehow felt that the movie needed to validate their theories. I guess that's how modern internet-driven fandom works, but it's often not how creators work. So the fans will have built up some complex theory about how the fact that this character wore this necklace in this episode but didn't wear it in the next episode means that blah blah blah. And usually if you ask the actual writers they'll say something like 'I never really thought about that' It's the same shit that messed up Dr Who. So then the creators have the choice to try and respond to or validate some of those theories (which leads to RoS) or just do what *they* think is interesting, which leads to TLJ. When I was younger and obsessed with stuff like that and reading all the blogs, I'd have probably been more interested in the former, but these days the latter is much more refreshing and interesting to me. I liked TLJ because it was different and refreshing, and it made me interested in where things might go from here. If it had set up Snoke as a Palpatine Clone and Rey's parents as being someone from the trilogy I'd have left the theatre with very little interest in the next movie, because i'd know exactly where the whole thing was headed. If it left the movie makers with a problem about how to continue in the 3rd movie then, (a) they were seriously lacking in imagination, and (b) they should have just gotten Rian Johnson back to do ep9. IT seems we won't ever get his SW trilogy, which is a shame as I'd love to have seen what he could have done with the opportunity to do something new in the SW universe. This is waay too long... [edit] and so it got ninja'd!

All opinions are valid. Except mine are better, obv. I find it interesting how many people's opinions are split on TLJ and Rogue One. I loved both, because I thought they were both fresh takes, but I've met lots of people who love *one* of them but hate the other. I agree that the casino planet escape was a bit shit... they obviously felt the need to put in some kind of cgi action scene were it probably wasn't needed. But I liked the Benicio Del Toro character and the betrayal. Trusting the scoundrel that you just met in a bar... not always the best idea.
While Clem is entirely free to dislike TLJ, I'm not sure it's indisputable that it's a bad movie.
For example, metacritic professional critic ratings: TFA 80%, TLJ 84%, RoS 53%. So at least a fair few people felt that TLJ was a good movie.

Phasma and other parts of the “what about x?” questions were victims of Disney’s cross-format plans where they were going to have books, comics and games fill in the gaps.

To be fair I didn't hate it when I saw it at the cinema, I didn't love it either but I can understand why it reviewed well (film critics love movies that subvert your expectations for example, plus Johnson is a bit of a journalists darling). It was only when I watched it on home release that I thought it was an utter dog turd of a movie. Then watched it again on Disney plus about a year ago (coz 4K HDR!) and it took me three sittings to finish it.

I don't think a movie has to be good to be enjoyed or maybe it's more my bar for what constitutes a bad movie is Lars Von Trier. I didn't really get on with Eternals, it doesn't make it a bad movie but then again I'm not certain what the consensus on that one is.

- she would hold up her umbrella and fly through the stars back into the ship To be fair, when I saw it on release I did feel the same, only insofar as its ending was fantastic. But I feel you're dismissing a lot of things here. Yes, we've drawn a line under Rey and Snoke (well, until they rubbed out the line). Arguably - arguably - they've reduced Hux to a comedy character now and that's where he'll stay. And yes, you're probably right, Luke's arc is complete; whatever function he serves in EpIX, it'll be in service of someone else, Obi-Wan-style. But Finn and Poe have a lot of character development that could go anywhere; will Poe take over leadership from Leia? Conversely, has his experience taught him he's not cut out to be a leader, whereas the charismatic and newly-determined Finn might fit into that role? And what of the Resistance - is it now the Rebellion? We know there to be loads of Force-sensitives around; will they hear the story of Luke's heroic sacrifice and join the cause? Is Phasma really dead? How will Kylo function now he's Supreme Leader? Can he hold the First Order together? And what of the Knights of Ren - they sounded cool in the first film in this trilogy but were totally absent here; presumably they can be a huge part of the finale! It's strongly implied they're made up of Jedi from Luke's temple that Kylo turned to the Dark Side! Hey, maybe we can have a film where a small army of Dark Jedi fight a small army of Light Jedi! And speaking of which, Kylo and Rey seemed cozy, and both of them seem conflicted with the Force, no longer viewing it as simple Light and Dark; perhaps something will come of that? Perhaps Kylo's compassion - and love for Rey?! - will impede his ability to be Supreme Leader; perhaps Rey's anger over Luke's death and feelings of betrayal will lead her on a darker path as she fights Kylo?! That's all more-or-less off the top of my head. My point ISN'T to say you should like the film! If you hate it, fair enough! I just think very strongly that, whilst it took a hard turn no one was really expecting, there was plenty of scope for a great finale. Edit: for some reason I thought I was replying to the most recent comment, but actually I was just re-instigating an argument from two hours ago. Ignore me...

Am I the only one who thought Phasma was a really really shit character? She's the new Boba Fett, in that she looks cool and seems badass, but does bugger all and dies an embarassing death*. *Yes, yes, he's not dead, etc. I actually thought it would have been funny in EpIX if she'd survived somehow and came back just to get embarassingly offed again.

If they hadn’t put her in the trash and had her fight Finn with the fake lightsaber electric thingy in force awakens (like the standard stormtrooper did), she could have been better thought of.

Opinions about whether you like something are valid, but fanbois always try to back it up with reasons, and the reasons tend to be stupid nonsense. The only 100% correct position is that all the Star Wars movies are terrible garbage.

Surely there must already be some expanded universe thing with Phasma, and I bet she's not dead in it. *Yes, yes, he's not dead, etc. I actually thought it would have been funny in EpIX if she'd survived somehow and came back just to get embarassingly offed again. See, this this the kind of stuff *I* want from my star wars movies. Actually, I'd have been fine with them bringing back palpatine if Kylo had just casually killed him off 1 minute after meeting him. I wonder if it's because I watched too much Buffy, and the stuff like the Snoke thing is exactly the kind of stuff that it would pull. Unstoppable demon that can't be killed and had to be sliced into 5 pieces that were hidden at the 4(5) corners of the world? Oh, wait, we just blew him up with a rocket launcher. Nevermind..

Surely there must already be some expanded universe thing with Phasma, and I bet she's not dead in it. Are there actually any stories set post-Rise yet? I'm anticipating several decades' worth of fiction chronicling Poe's attempts to lead a new Republic and Rey's creation of a new Jedi academy, until Disney release episode X and retcons everything.

I'm surprised at how quiet it's been tbh. Almost expected them to keep up the annual film approach with standalone(ish) stories like Solo/Rogue One.

I think that they decided to get a plan mapped out, like the MCU, and start again. TRoS left most fans disappointed, with TLJ splitting fans down the middle. The TV shows, up until BoBF, we’re all well received. I have read some of the High Republic comics, not the books. I think that they are being enjoyed, but I don’t enjoy what I have read so far. John Boyega is on record that he is done with Star Wars. Which is a shame. Finn’s story, post-Palpatine, could be interesting.

Yeah, seems they have scrapped their plans for the films.
Rian Johnson was given a trilogy pretty much based on how pleased they were with The Last Jedi... then the film came out and fanboys hated it so his trilogy got put on hold indefinitely. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were due to do a trilogy as well, which seems to also have been ditched after the backlash against the end of Game of Thrones. (Ironically, many put the blame on them wanting to finish GoT quickly and get on with making Star Wars as the reason for the ending being the way it is. It is known that they declined HBO'S offer of having more seasons.)
This coupled with the lukewarm reception of Rise leaves the state of the film side as all in a bit of limbo. The only one we know about is Patty Jenkins's Rogue Squadron, supposedly next December and seems to be a one off rather than the start of a new trilogy.
The TV stuff seems to have done reasonably well and is arguably a better fit for expanding the universe. Seems we are mostly going to see them focus on those for a few years.
