I think the DLC assumed you’d be fully tooled up because everything was a way higher level than the base game. But the general rhythm was kind of the same, I think.

It was probably that I had completely forgotten how to play the game then. It's why I don't often bother with dlc and also tend to play games until I finish them. Any sort of gap of more than a couple of weeks and it's like someone has reversed my hands.

Was it Jeff that reviewed it? He was talking about it on their podcast and he didn't like the first one that much either really. He basically doesn't use many of the tools available and then complained all his fights are the same. I quite often disagree with his thoughts but always listen to what he has to say as he at least explains why he doesn't like things. I think that’s a valid criticism. If a game isn’t designed to direct you towards using the cool tools it gives you, just an option you have to force yourself to use, then the design is lacking a bit. This was one of the things I didn’t like about the first one. That and watching robo dinosaurs walking around on scaletrix track loops. Also the game was difficult but not rewarding.

Different strokes for different folks as I found the first one only slightly challenging but very rewarding
Loved the combat and loved using every weapon as they all had real value. You couldn’t stick to just one weapon unless you wanted to try missions more than once - which I never did, other than the timed ones that took a couple of attempts once or twice
The bandit camps were one of my favourites, doing them without being spotted once was delightful

If you play HZD on harder modes you have to engage with the whole toolset, including elemental attacks. The combat really shines at higher difficulty.

I played it on hard and glad I did. A good level of challenge and having to be fairly strategic.
I also had all of the hud off apart from health and weapons on dynamic which really helped with just discovering stuff with more immersion . Head in a general direction for main quest and see what happens was my motto.

Just started Frozen Wilds and I'm reminded that I really hated the crafting and the whole menus are an utter mess. I hope they changed some of that in Forbidden West.

I started Zero Dawn again last night, NG+ Ultra Hard difficulty, with the aim of golden-pathing the campaign and doing all the Frozen Wilds DLC for the first time. I guess I won't be starting Forbidden West tomorrow.

I think 'send to stash' will mitigate some of that. For the latter part of the game and all of the DLC you are just dripping in mats and constantly in and out of menus to micromanage it. If you are going to have a crafting system with a stupid amount of ingredients, send to stash is literally the least you can do to help manage that.

At the moment I'm constantly dropping less rare mods, and picking up rarer ones.. as I cba to travel and sell them all. Send to stash should be a godsend.

I guess I won't be starting Forbidden West tomorrow. Good luck, I dread to think what the final Boss fight would be like on that setting! I only just about did it on easy/normal...but I am pretty terrible at games though! I will have my copy tomorrow, but I'm about 60/70% into ME1 Legend, so think I will complete that first. I have gone back to only playing one single player/campaign game at a time once again, it suits me better.

My copy just arrived. I went the thrifty route of buying the PS4 version to get the free PS5 upgrade, but I'm assuming I have to wait until tomorrow to get the upgrade?
Well, I'm installing it now anyway and will report back if I can upgrade.

Kinky, I did that as well, ended up paying £52 (well £37 as I had credit) from Amazon, I didn't fancy paying the additional £17 for box art!

KinkyMong - you're probably the most qualified of us to answer that! I'd say dig through the menus while the disc is inserted to see if you can do it now. Hoping mine arrives today, as TGC don't usually fuck about (dispatched within two hours of ordering yesterday)

I thought the first game's combat was a bit crap and weedy feeling. Buuuut the DLC with those charge up bows felt great.

Can't see any options to upgrade yet in any of the menus. Game is fully installed but going to the game hub only give the choice of paying to pre-order. Ah well.

I think they said you'd need to wait until it launched.

Any word on if they’ve dropped the one thing that really bugged me about the original, getting locked into a combat situation you may not be prepared for that wasn’t clearly signposted, with the save point happening after the lock?

No early delivery from The Game Collection for me :-( Delivery from Amazon just landed. But I am being mean and not giving it to the boy until tomorrow, otherwise he'll be up at 6am wanting to play it on his day off. He needs his sleep.

Bah, I got excited for a moment as Amazon seemed to have dispatched early - had an email saying delivery today and everything, but it now seems to have changed to tomorrow on the main site. The local Amazon depot is literally round the corner from where I work but they seem to be holding it there.
Ah well, can’t complain really.
Re difficulty in the first game - I absolutely agree it comes to life when you’re challenged and have to use all the wider range of weapons at your disposal. Not to go on about EG’s review of Forbidden West, the the couple of comments about having to arrow things to death was pretty telling of someone who isn’t bothering to try out the range of weapons. Once you get into blowing weapons off so you can use them yourself, and exploiting elemental weaknesses, it’s a lot more fun. Oh, and using environmental hazards to help you too.
I found Frozen Wilds pretty tough at times (on Normal) despite going into it having finished the main game and fully levelled.

Yeah that was my experience too. I could get through it, but it was a proper 'lean forward to concentrate' step up

Ha, I've always loved how the lean forward is when things are serious. Especially playing something like Pro Evo back in university.

I did pre-order a month or two ago, dunno if that makes a difference. I may have a play later tonight if my migraine subsides. Just make sure it's all installed properly and patched etc of course.

I've never found gyro controllers useful on a full controller. If it's a wand, like a WiiMote or a Move controller, it feels natural, but there's something about having both hands on a controller and just rotating it slightly that always felt fiddly to me.
But nice to have more options, I guess.
