Oh, and Proxmox really wants people to pay a yearly subscription, but if you don't want to do that, you need to point it to use test repos, otherwise you won't be getting any updates. The instructions are on their forum.

So it turns out Proxmox doesn't support eMMC storage. Therefore bit moot, everything is going on the secondary disk, which is now a 240GB old SSD I had in my desktop but wasn't really using.
I've got Proxmox installed and updated and Home Assistant installed as VM. So far so good! Now to put Adguard on and stop derailing this thread.

Right AdGuard appears to be working. I'll leave my router as the primary DNS server whilst testing but pointing my desktop and phone at Adguard I can certainly see a difference.

So, great shout to everyone who said use a VM. Turns out I'm constantly having to restart Home Assistant to test things!

I visited the old site while away from my pihole protected safe space, and Jesus it's bad.

Smarttube next seems to be shitting itself at the moment. Plays a few seconds and then buffers. Installed the beta instead and same thing. YouTube is bloody painful without sponsorblock! Seems to be a known issue, so fingers crossed it's fixable and not the end of ad free TV viewing... github.com/yuliskov/SmartTubeNext/issues/1761

I've finally got around to installing PiHole for some network level adblocking on the small pc sat I have sat in my office that acts as a file/media server download box etc. Instead of picking up a RasPi, I've installed this under windows subsystem for linux, which Literally took about 5 mins to do. I'm currently trialling it on a few devices by manually setting their DNS before pushing all home network traffic through it. So far, so fucking amazing and its only been running 30 minutes with just my laptop and tv forwarded through it

Yeah, it's pretty nuts how many requests get blocked by it. Past 90 days of adguard home below (which runs on my router) Only real issue I've had over the past year or so was a gaming specific list blocking PS5 telemetry, so it didn't record my playtime.

Have you added more blocklists than the stock one (StevenBlack)? Any recommendations, or is that stock one enough for general use?

I've been running Adguard Home for a while now (edit: actually since this threat put it on my radar - see above) and it's great.
I have one instance in my NUC that runs home assistant and another on my NAS as a backup. The two sync using a simple program that runs in docker also on the NAS.
I also have it set up to resolve a generic local domain address (*.myname.lab) to my nginx instance so I don't have to remember IPs of everything.
Only real issues I have are: - sometimes it's annoying when a Google shopping link you actually do want to follow is blocked. - YouTube ads only seem to be reliably blocked when using the browser. Still get them on my phone and the generic TV app (though smarttube means that doesn't matter so much).
Just recently setup Homarr as my homepage for all my homelab stuff and that has a nice inbuilt Adguard integration which includes an on/off toggle. So it's nice and easy to check both and temporarily turn off when I actually want those shopping links to work.
Highly recommend Homarr actually. It's ideal if you have a bunch of devices/apps on your network with a webUI. Think it also supports piHole.
If anyone has a reliable solution for YouTube phone ads that would be amazing. I used to run YouTube Vanced but that stopped working last year.

I use ReVanced on my phone and tablet. Bit of a faff to set up at first but well worth it.

I think I tried that a while back and it didn't work. I'm aiming to get a new phone in the Black Friday sales so might give that another whirl then.
Vanced was amazing whilst it worked, so as you say, worth a bit of faff.

I installed NewPipe on my phone, you have to manually export your YouTube subscriptions as a .csv and import this into the app, but that's all the setup you need for ad free YouTube with file downloads, background playback etc.

Yeah, it's not the most intuitive process. If you install ReVanced patcher and go to the patcher tab and select YouTube, it'll show you the recommended version. So you have to trundle off to apkmirror and download that exact version, then on the patcher screen choose storage and browse to the APK you've downloaded. I also had to install Vanced microg.

Sounds like an awful lot of hassle when you could just sign up to a Youtube Premium family account for a few pounds a month via a VPN.

I couldn't get that to work, last time I tried (via Argentina IIRC)

Recently installed ReVanced on two tablets and it worked perfectly, assume it'd be fine on any phone as well. I followed this guide:

I did that in the past but had issues with payments not going through for renewals, so this method seemed like less of a faff. It's simple after the first time you've done it really and I only update once in a blue moon. Plus ReVanced has other stuff like sponsorblock, which is a huge time saver. (you don't realise how much of your time is taken up with shilling until it gets skipped automatically)

Same, I've been trying out YouTube music that way.
There's some good things I like, like being able to downvote songs and artists easily (much easier than on Spotify), but I've had some real issues with playback. Because YouTube shoehorn in music video versions where they can, even within albums, it's really discombobulating when the audio isn't quite the album version, because it's got a video intro or something similar.
Also the sound levels are literally all over the place. Even with normalisation supposedly on I've been having to adjust the volume between songs, even when playing an album. Again I think that's down to them using video versions. I've tried setting it to audio versions only so it doesn't play the video but it's still playing the audio from the video regardless.
At least I'm not paying for it.
