Really bored at work today, so I put up a container on the server and I'm getting glorious ad blocking all over. It really does work.
The container reports total server load so it keeps complaining the single CPU I assigned it is constantly busy, but otherwise smooth sailing.

Mine only tends to get above 20% CPU usage (on a Pi,) when updating blocklists or running reports. That said, the dns load of my home network probably isn't all that big. 2 PC's, couple of consoles, 4 smart TVs, 3 phones and 4 tablets is about it. The problem is once you've seen the Web like this you never want to go back. I tried the local newspaper site with it off after someone asked the other day and it was horrific.

Could also be in use elsewhere unless you're pinning specific cores and only making them available to that container.
Adguard Home has been running like a champ on my router so far, haven't seen CPU usage go above 2% on any core. Ended up disabling diversion as this seems to be doing a much better job. Haven't watched anything on 4od yet so will give it a try at lunch.

I've got wireguard set up on my phone and have never really used it apart from the rare time I need to access my NAS when out and about. Think I'll be using it a lot more now after spending a day in the office/commuting.

Oh, I guess I wasn't clear.
The pi-hole CPU use is negligible, something like 0.5% or something on a single core. BUT, since it's running in a container on a hypervisor (Proxmox), running w or uptime reports CPU use way above 1 (one core) since there are 7 or so VMs running on it, so pi-hole thinks it's using a lot more resources than are available so it constantly flashes an exclamation mark at me. Just a cosmetic issue.
I really like how it uses a glorious 54MB of RAM.

I tried one of those local newspaper sites just to see how good the lists were. Had to add (^|\.)taboola\.com$ to the blacklist get rid of one of the blocks of shit, but otherwise great!

Yep, I can actually browse my local rag's site now. Not that it's worth much tbh.

When I asked I wasn’t planning on using the local rag sites, just that I figured it would be a good test . They really are worthless

Of course. But where else am I going to read the illiterate ramblings of the racists that live near me?

Other than whitelisting redirect.viglink.com is there anything else that can be done on the Pi-hole to get links working for FontGeek?

Lost about 100k of domains after an update (I assume). Is that quite normal?

Lost about 100k of domains after an update (I assume). Is that quite normal? It does happen. Some blocklists see maintained more regularly than others. Some have a big bang every now and then and either prune some or figure out how to regex them so you can catch thousands of subdomains in 1 block entry. As long as it keeps blocking everything I want to keep blocked I don't really pay it much attention. Have you started investigating/pruning from your Top Permitted Domains yet? Or been surprised at anything in the top blocked ones? I learned early on that Samsung TVs are much chattier than LG ones.

I don't open many links from here so I just delete the big link bit in the url bar when I do but it's an issue.

Almost perfect. More than anything I'm impressed with the performance improvement, browser level blocking doesn't touch it. Or at least that's my experience.
The only thing is that it's not blocking YouTube ads but a bit of Googling suggests that's a lost cause?

Yeah, this blocks domains and Google serves their YouTube ads from the same domain as the actual content so you can't lose one without the other. You're right about the performance improvement though, browser just seems that much snappier.

Just read the thread and tempted to order a Pi and give this a go.
Regarding YouTube ads, I've got an app called smartyouTubetv (or similar) for my Shield TV and it's amazing. It removes all ads, including some in video promotions. No idea how it works.
On my phone I've got YouTube Vanced which you don't need to root your phone for and that also removes ads.

NewPipe which does the same thing. newpipe.net/You can grab it from f-droid or direct from the Github page.

Fucks sake, I may just stop using YouTube altogether. Every time I open the official app by mistake it pisses me off the amount of ads they insert into every video to try and strongarm you into paying for premium

SmartTubeNext is awesome (shield TV) Sponsorblock really makes you realise how much of the video is taken up by unnecessary shit.

Another shout out to SmartTubeNext, I use it on all our FireTV sticks and it's outstanding. Gutted about the Vanced news though.... newspipe is ok but you can't login, which is a bummer.
