I remember reading an article years ago called “Zombie Simpsons” which examined the proposal that series 2 to 10 were the best, and it was all downhill from then on.
I tend to agree, with the odd exception over the years.

I think there's a pretty clear correlation between Futurama launching (end of s10 in 1999) and The Simpsons going downhill.

Seeing the whole thing was on Disney, I tried semi-randomly watching episodes from later seasons, like 15+, figuring there had to be some which were decent. I tried looking for a guide to "good episodes from later seasons of The Simpson", but I couldn't actually find one.
It really did not go well. It's kind of shocking how bad it is especially given it's still running. There were some "acceptable" episodes, but like the best ones were on par with "okay" or "decent" episodes from 2-10, not actually good episodes. Seems like there isn't (that I could find) any kind of organised guide to good episodes in later seasons because there really hardly are even "okay" episodes. I went back and watch some older season stuff to see if it had always been unfunny, but no, it's clearly just gone to shit.

Season 1 is surprisingly dark at times.
Homer attempts suicide, and leaves a note for the family which is found and read by his 8 year old daughter.
The family has absolutely no problem with strapping the baby into an electric shock helmet and actually pushing the button on it.
Bart is used as a slave labourer and kept in deplorable conditions by those French vintners.
The kids get held hostage in their own home by a con-artist/burglar and are forced to crack her over the head with a baseball bat in order to rescue themselves.

I was never a big fan of the Sideshow Bob episodes, but I do love Kelsey Grammer's performance if that makes any sense!

Here’s a hot take: The Principle and The Pauper is not a bad episode. Sure, the premise is stupid but the writing is actually pretty good and there are some funny jokes.
