Fleeces and jumpers are fine, but honestly it’s been so cold that it was causing me typos! Had to go on.
Properly frightening as it’s only November.

Looking at usage, I think mine would have been about £7.

Boiler/physics fans: is it better to set the boiler to a lower temperature and have it work over a longer period of time before the thermostat tells it to shut off, or set the boiler to higher temperature and make it work harder over a shorter period of time… Lower boiler temp is in itself generally more efficient, assuming it is a condensing boiler. Fewer cycles (on/off) is also better. It's also a more comfortable heat.

Heating has been on from 1pm - 7pm. Washing machine twice today. It’s the gas that definitely shoots up whenever we put it on. Gas oven too. That’s not helping by any stretch.

Also set the hot water temp so your not adding cold to it.

Hey there Smart Meter fans. I’ve just looked at today’s damage; we’ve had the heating on a lot today as it’s been really cold here. £9.45 combined. A new record \o/ £12.20 today as I switch everything off to go to bed. Heating on 90 minutes this morning and 2 and half hours this evening (had dropped to 13 degrees in the kitchen at 4pm). One wash and One tumble dry. Two of us workings from home. With Hindsight, jacket potato for lunch with the gas oven on for 90mins probably didn't help. Eeesh. Bizarrely, the best bit is that if I keep the daily at £12 or less I'll be saving about £100 a month against what British Gas are actually extracting from my wallet (£470/mo). Already about £350 in credit just from October as we kept the daily combined down to like £6 thanks mainly to the milder weather.

Yesterday's gas bill...£9.24
Fuck me it's going to be a painful winter.
I even turned down the heating once my son went to sleep but that obviously made today worse

My washing machine broke mid wash. So all my towels and clothes were soaked.
First time I have had to turn on the heating this year, but needed to blast radiators to dry on them, which meant I also had to put on dehumidifier otherwise I had water running down my walls...
I dread to think how much doing that for 24 hours is costing me.

Stick a knife in your potato before microwaving to cook the inside quicker

Stick a knife in your potato before microwaving to cook the inside quicker Alternatively, cook it properly in the oven, instead of like a mad bastard.

Look. Baked potatoes are easy, that’s all I’m saying.
Scrub them, prick them all over with a fork, soak them in a strong brine for a bit, bake them in the oven, brush them with EVOO for the last few minutes, done.

I prefer them just done in the oven but needs must these days, so take the microwave and then oven option. Plus often disorganised so time is a factor too.

I need to start microwaving them for a bit first... Absolutely love the mega crispy skin you get from being done fully in the oven, though.
Empty it out and make a little food boat for your fillings like a five year old.

You'll probably have a pretty hefty amount of usage at first getting the relative humidity down to a decent level, but after that it shouldn't be too bad and should only need to run for a few hours a day to keep to a target RH level (depending on a lot of factors) I've found that the RH reading on our one seems to be at least 15% over what it actually is. Got a little hygrometer that seems far more accurate. If I set it to 60%, then I'll start getting static shocks every time I stroke one of the cats. Any hygrometer you'd recommend?

Wait, you don't rub your tatties with olive oil and salt before you bake them? Blimey...

Any hygrometer you'd recommend? we've got a couple of these around the house - www.screwfix.com/p/htc-1-thermometer-hygrometer/2806x - which seem accurate in that they predictably bounce around between 45 & 65 dependent on season, weather, open windows, and cooking/shower etc. Absolutely impossible to figure out how to change the clock without googling though.

Always find it strange that the humidity in the house goes up to around 69% in Oct/early Nov and then dive bombs after to around 50% after the heating has been on consistently.
I don't understand science! I thought hot air was supposed to hold more water!

Yeah humidity is relative (in the way hotter air can hold more moisture, so the same amount of water at a higher temp means lower humidity).
Main source of moisture is outside where it is cold. If you heat the air up inside then humidity decreases. If you don't hear it up, humidity is higher and you can have damp issues.
