I'm typing this in gloves. Works quite well if you get those with open fingertips. Pictures Steptoe senior at a keyboard.

I had a fire going last night (from the chainsawed wardrobe) and its sunny. Burning household waste is a criminal offence

Guess it depends on the windows. My kids room always has loads of condensation on his window in the morning. An hour with the window open and it's all dried off. With anything applied to the glass I could imagine the condensation finding its way between the bubble wrap and the glass and then not being able to dry off and ending of getting a bit manky.

You can always peel it off to clean them occasionally.

If it's furniture, it's likely been treated with something to help it last longer and then varnished as well, so it probably shouldn't be burned...
Although, that doesn't seem to stop most people, tbh.

Burning household waste is a criminal offence I didn't know this, thanks. I thought old solid wood was fine, but I can see that its possibly not as it might have been treated by something years ago. Don't listen to him, he's not the police. You have my permission to burn baby burn.

Don't listen to him, he's not the police He's writing a very stern letter of complaint as we speak, though.

So we are seemingly 19kwh gas a day in summer, (cooking and hot water) (looking at June bill), and then 100+ in winter (looking at December/January 2020 was 134, with Christmas at home, 2021 was 107 when we were away for Christmas). I can't quite just take out hot water and cooking to calculate heating costs as will also just need less gas for hot water in summer compared to winter.
That does feel like a lot of gas for hot water in summer. Think I need to do some calculations.

If you have a bigger tank, or a combi and lots of people using it then that could use a bit more. But your number is basically double mine and also includes cooking - how much does a gas hob / oven use?

I found messing with when you have your hot water heating on made a huge difference. Ours only comes on for 30 minutes in the morning, just before it’s used, same again in the evening.
The central heating comes on at the same time as that in the summer.
You’re using more gas in the summer than we use in the middle of winter.

I averaged 15kWh last month. One bed apartment, me and kid on weekends. Two lizard tanks push up usage, but with summer ending hardly use AC at all anymore
Sixty dollars that lot cost me

That'd be £153 over here before you even factor in standing charges.

To be fair, where I am leccie is pretty cheap. The Tennessee Valley Authority built loads of dams in 30s and 40s plus we have nuke plants all over the shop; one is visible from an elevated position and another not that much further away
Off being inTrump country and the vast majority of electricity is renewable or nuclear

I think ours is 200l and it is heated up twice a day and it basically covers showers and dishes in the morning, then bath time and dishes in evening. That would be 14kw.

We don't have a smart meter so i have no idea what our daily use is but i can remember we used about 3800kWh of electricity last year, technically a four bed, with some working from home from me, the wife and baby at home all the time.
We haven't turned on the heating yet either, but now all the windows are modern double glazed ones rather than old crittle windows tha house is a lot warmer. Now the cold spots are located around the very thin bits of structure, underneath bay windows and single skin blockwork around the front door. Got to love an old 50s build.

£3.18 already today cause it’s fucking freezing outside. I’m pretty sure Mother Earth is taking the piss now. 4c in early October is unusual right?!

Can see Meter Watching becoming the next big craze over winter and will lead to lots of amazing 'water cooler moments'. Light the wood burner, load up on sausage rolls and settle in for a night in front of the meter.
I've gradually been making a spreadsheet of how much power everything in the house uses. Have to flick something on, leg it downstairs to the meter, take the reading and then rinse/repeat. Have logged virtually everything at this point and obviously with the washing machine I've had to take sub readings for warm wash, spin cycle, drain, rinse-hold, different sized loads etc
Really annoyingly though the only cell on the spreadsheet that I haven't yet filled in is for how much power my actual smart meter uses. But every time I turn it off I can't get a reading and it's driving me nuts.
It still retains power for just under two seconds and last night I think I nearly saw the usage drop just before the display blinked off. Will try again a few times tonight.

You know the meters are wireless? Our's has a battery. No need to leg it around anywhere You might want to though, to keep warm

Eon still haven't responded to my messages about smart meter. They sent an absolute moron to do it previously, who decided my gas meter was unsafe.
Gas board came round and called him a moron. Electric came round and called him a moron.
Now, Eon won't respond to anything and I want to at least start getting money for what solar electric I'm generating.

Not sure this fixation with the meter readings is healthy. It's easy enough to cut back where you can without getting OCD about making a cup of tea.
