I'd say the NZ housing market is probably worse than Australia. The average house price is now over a million dollars which is about £490 - £500,000. And if you wanted to live in Auckland or Wellington your probably looking at $1.5m for a nice place. It's absolutely absurd. Don't you earn a lot more in NZ though? Like 3 x times the wage compared to UK. i.e. a policeman on £35K in the UK would be on $105K in NZ? Fuck no! And the cost of living is considerably higher. I live in Wellington and earn a 'comfortable' income - the sort of income that should get me on the property ladder. No fucking chance at the moment, certainly not in Welly.

I thought New Zealand was supposed to have some of the least affordable, shittest quality housing in the developed world? If you're buying a relatively new house it should be decent quality. The shitboxes tend to be rentals maintained by the huge slumlord class that has arisen.

It's weird trying to compare prices, cos some things are much more expensive here (29p for 500g pasta!! Here it's about 2 quid) but others like energy seem much cheaper. House prices are cheaper, but rising rapidly. But national health insurance is way too expensive.

Because agriculture is still so important land prices play as part as well as housing. And NZ makes piles of cash exporting dairy products, mainly to China, as well as meat, timber etc. Tourism was big as well, but obviously that's a bit fucked ATM. The housing problem is invidious, though. A classic balancing act of trying not to tank the market and fuck the over-leveraged investors and first-home buyers, but also making sure that progress is made before renters like me get so fed up that we crack out the billhooks and start the party. Unemployment is at a record low which is probably exacerbating inflation. It'll be interesting to see what happens when (if) COVID finally dissipates and all the Kiwis (over 250000 IIRC) that moved back home in the last couple of years get fed up and move back overseas

Totally forgot today we're also seeing interest rate rise. Spoke to my adviser the other week and he said it's not that big a worry but fuck me, April is going to be an absolute bloodbath for a lot of people.
50% energy price increase (+ around another 40% in October) NI rate rise Interest rates
And it's not like the govt are trying to curtail spending to halt inflation because inflation is due to standard household goods.
Recession by the end of the year?

The thing about the rebate-loan thing is that the only way it becomes manageable to enforce repayment, is to levy the charge on the house rather than the individual who pays the bill.
So if you're old and die in the next 4 years you dodge the bill
If you're young and move into your own place for the first time, you'll be charged, even though you didn't have the benefit of the discount in the first place.
It's bascially a tax, one that hits the young harder.

The whole thing stinks. We moved into this property 4 months ago and accepted £55 a month on gas/electric (I've bumped it up to £70 for the winter). Now we're out of contract in March and they are saying based on your consumption it's now £230! They don't have enough data to assume we'd use that amount for the entire year, so they are using the previous tenant who had 3 kids..

The Guardian can't get enough of articles bashing wood burners. If you have a decent burner and good quality fuel then I don't think it's much of a problem.
