How are they supposed to assess that? Looks for signs of starvation or hypothermia? Fucking dystopian society.

It's just fucking bonkers. Never mind that they're already stretched to breaking point.
"Can I get an appointment with my doctor, please?" "Of course. What do you need to see them for?" "Can't pay my fucking leccy bill m8"
It's already well over a month for an appointment if you're very lucky. Stop the ride. I want to get off...

Being on a prepayment meter as the bills always seemed to be comparable to people we knew on billed payments we only very rarely give them meter readings. Are we likely to get screwed over if we don't on a prepayment meter or is this for those with monthly bills? (Obviously we are all getting screwed over with the increases but any more than if I don't bother giving a reading) Prepay meters are on a premium tariff by default, you need to get off of that if possible Every alternative we ever looked at looked more expensive or no better so never saw the need to switch, especially with all of the bollocks about supplier-tied smart meters etc. Having seen all the suppliers collapsing hasn't really made me think I have made the wrong decision here, stuck with the devil we knew. I think the only time I ever just paid regularly monthly gas and electric bills was when I lived in South Korea (and it was extremely cheap over there back then).

You know the Brexit argument of cutting VAT on fuel that we couldn't do without leaving the EU and still haven't?
Germany is doing that.

1. freeze the energy cap using legislation. 2. energy companies can't turn a profit due to rising wholesale energy costs that they can't pass on to consumers. They either borrow from financial markets or find efficiencies. 3. government becomes a lender of last resort. If nobody else will lend to them, then govt steps in. They do this by offering to buy equity, or buying convertible bonds that become equity of not repaid with X years 4. these are new shares, thereby diluting existing shareholders 5. either energy prices fall to resale at retail energy pricing according to the cap profitable, or government continue to buy up shares in energy companies. 6. either energy companies work as private entities, and the govt can sell it's shares at a profit to the state; or they continue to fail to provide affordable energy to people, prove that privatising energy was a bad idea and the government eventually owns so many shares that they have nationalised energy companies by default
Easy.

On point 2, there is a slightly less covered issue that businesses have no cap, and we are going to see many businesses go under from energy costs. If energy suppliers can't get the money from consumers, maybe they will charge businesses more...

Good point. Legislate to freeze energy prices across the board at retail, regardless if for domestic or business or retail customers. Fix on 2019 prices and only increase by some predetermined level that is not mental.
Originally the price cap was there to inhibit the "loyalty penality" that people ended up paying if they cba constantly changing energy supplier every time their contract came up for renewal. A completely pointless bit of activity and price gouging that could only happen because of the ideological idea that energy provision would be better provided by the efficiencies market competition brings.
Fucking. Idiots.

Get the mortgage renewal in ASAP before the rates rise anymore. We got offered a much better rate at the back end of last year before it was due in February with the same provider (Halifax) We got lucky looking at how things are going. Nursery fees from next year to pay are going to make things incredible tough for us I think that's before I even think about the cost of energy with a current direct debit of £109. I may yet consider a 2nd job at this rate something I really don't want to be doing like the guy I was working with on Friday who after finishing his 9-5 shift with me was getting the train for another job till 2am. 18 hours in a day plus whatever else he'd done the rest of the week. No thanks. Thanks. I didn't know it was possible to do that. I feel a bit stupid not having done so if I could. Thanks. I'll check into it. I'm not great at the scary finances like pensions, tax returns and mortgages. Right. I better read something else or I'm not going to sleep tonight. I've been speaking to brokers today and the first one that has come back has said most mortgage companies have said they wont look at us on the grounds of affordability. That really shocked me as I've been playing my current mortgage for the last five years and the renewal is £125 more and I've had a £400 pay rise. Feel really shit tbh. There's some that will, but for higher rates. I guess I'm going to have to use them. I'll check on the other broker tomorrow and see what they've found as I'm really knocked for six by it. Maybe the first one copied something down wrong or maybe they are just really tightening things up and are expecting people to struggle to afford things. Thinking about it, it's going to be the latter. Life sucks. Those wankers in government need to get their heads out of their arses and do some windfall taxes on those who have made so much it of all this misery. I'm going to struggle to sleep tonight.

Our broker got the best rate from our current lender, as they seem keen to retain customers at the moment (crazy, I know!)
Don't overthink it mate, like you say it's most likely a fluffed up number somewhere.

Thanks both. Apparently our current lender will retain us at 3.69% as opposed to the lower rates of other companies. That's assuming their rate is still 3.69% on Friday which is when I can fix the rate as I can't renew earlier than 3 months apparently.
Anyway, thanks. I need to stop staring in to the dark and get to bed and try to sleep.
