I was reading about how Ofgem have basically wanked this all up for ages and are a joke now. Having worked in the civil service for ten years, it doesn't surprise me. Yup, obvious it's all in the regulation.

With an old background in financial services and system backstops, I find it hard to parse that an energy market framework that requires all users to shoulder cost of failure of individual firms doesn't regulate those firms in the first place. That is awful.

The world is awash with chancers out to make a cash without any clue. Oops bankruptcy. Sorry lol not sorry.

How are they not being prosecuted for fraud or embezzlement?

It's not really fraud, they provided a service and went bust. They didn't hedge for the energy prices, so when energy prices went up they couldn't afford it any more, and the business went under.

They took payment in advance from their customers for a service they couldn't provide whilst shuttling the money into other "businesses" (ie, their pockets).
If they'd simply just gone bankrupt, I might agree, but they literally took the money for themselves.

It's legal. Blame Ofgem and this predatory fuckstick of a government.
Regulation would need to change to stop letting any fuckwit of a chancer set up shop and fuck off into the tax haven sunset when things go inevitably shitty. But no, deregulation, free markets unghhh.

How are they not being prosecuted for fraud or embezzlement? Because nobody sued them? Justice doesn't happen automatically. Well, mostly, it doesn't happen at all, but certainly not automatically either.

There are some naive people in here. How, exactly, do you expect I can a) refurb my yacht in Monaco this year and b) keep paying the crew's wages unless I get my special magical dividend/company loan?
Have you seen how much those fuckers want this year? I'd have to dip into my own pocket, fuck that. I promised Mum a new Phantom.

Well, mostly, it doesn't happen at all, but certainly not automatically either. It's a regulated industry, it shouldn't need someone to sue them... unfortunately the government is complicit.

It is kind of weird. At one point it seemed like all you needed was a laptop and a bit of liquidity to set up 'Roof Tile Energy' in your bedroom and then they started going bust with like 500 customers.
Energy is literally core national infrastructure and they let a 22 year old run a part of it with no background checks.

If Ofgem is like any other civil service department, they'll have been gutted and anyone with any sense/experience will have retired or taken voluntary severance to avoid the approaching shitshow.
DfT was like this, which is why everything went fucking tits up with franchising.

I haven’t been keeping up with this thread or paying much attention to bills recently, but fucking hell, when did it go over 5 quid for a 500g tub of Lurpak? I was gawping at it in my local Co-Op, convinced they must have mis-labelled it.

Could of just said we are turning the a/c down and you don't have to wear a tie if you don't want to and urge workplaces to do the same. Not some contrived nonsense like the above.

Germany is being reasonably hardcore with power restrictions to avoid rolling blackouts this winter if Putin gets twitchy on the Gasprom pedal.

Back in my day we could support a whole family on one wage! Bloody snowflakes not pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and earning more relative to the cost of living.

The PM does a photo op in a short sleeve shirt and no tie at the beginning of every summer.
Though when I mentioned here that the government recommends setting the AC to 28 degrees to save energy, everyone had a heart attack.
